This Ole Fart Thinks: Redskins vs Packers
As most of you know by know The Ole Fart is back and he lit into the Skins last week. He doesn’t let up much this week but he does try to trick you with some positive thoughts up front. He’s as grumpy as I’ve ever seen him but rightfully for so. I agree with a lot of what he says but I also disagree with some of it. Enough with me, here is the old fart:
Let me start with some positive thoughts. We reside in bottom dwelling division. None of the teams are very good or very consistent. My guess is that 9-7 will win the division. The team that gets on a run in the middle/late portion of the season will win it.It could just as well be us
I would also point out that in the midst of the middle 1/3 of last season we looked just about as bad then. We were sitting at something on the order of 3-5 or 3-6 before we caught fire and ran the schedule. We beat the eventual superbowl champs. So, it is certainly possible the same thing could happen with this team. But, it is going to take a whole lot more effort and heart than the team displayed today.Let’s start at the top with coaching. How do you go into an important game with a FG kicker who isn’t even a decent college FG kicker? We would have been better off with a guy like Cundiff. At least he once HAD a pro career. Potter is a nice kid, but he is no kicker at the NFL level. He isn’t even a guy like Cox, the long range guy we once had who came in beyond Mosely’s range. This kid simply is a waste of a roster spot. That is totally on the coaches/front office.
RGIII? Got lots of yardage when it didn’t matter, and at least he is beginning to make some throws. But there is ZERO threat of run, so teams are going after him. He simply needs time to get his game back (at least the throwing part) and that will happen over the latter half of this season. Will it be too late then? My guess is that, we will still be in the running for the division when things start to come together once again. There is NO reason to consider putting Cousins in for any reason other than that RGIII is hurt.
Offensive line: Without a doubt, it should be obvious that RGIII made the O line look better than it really was last year. We need to develop Compton and Gettis to eventually take over spots in the line. Might not even hurt to beat on LeRib to whip him into shape. I am simply not a fan of Montgomery/Lichtensteiger who appear to have regressed, or more likely, been exposed for what they truly are. The Packer line mauled our defense even though they were mostly low picks.
Tight Ends: Anyone can see that Reed is the real deal and is already supplanting Davis. We will see Davis this year, and no more. I think that Paulsen looks slow and not particularly adept at his blocks. Paul? I don’t think we will likely see him next year.
WR: All this talk about how Robinson had one of the best camps is stuff. He still looks like a reserve. On the other hand, Garcon is a load, and I like the way Hank is developing. Morgan shows little and Moss is good for a couple of catches a game, but is about at the end of his career. At some point it would make sense to bring up Lewis and Williams, but that will likely come if one of the receivers gets hurt. For now, we have no one who scares any defense except for Garcon.
RB’s: Have to feel for Morris. He runs really hard, but there aren’t any holes or cutback lanes. Still he got over 100 yards rushing the hard way. He is the real deal. Helu? Another invisible game.
Overall, the offense is stagnating and will remain so until RGIII gets his game elevated.
Defense? What a putrid effort. Other than Kerrigan, you could probably blow up the entire defense and start again. That might actually happen because most of them are free agents at the end of the year and there is no reason to keep guys like Wilson, Hall, Doughty, Merling, Baker, Kehl. You can add Fletcher to that list because he can’t tackle any more. Making McCoy [look] like the all pro he is is one thing, but Starks? This was one of the worst tackling efforts I have ever seen out of a Redskin defense.
Special mention about Orakpo. He is looking for Cushing like money next year. Are you kidding me? I don’t think he is even as effective as Jackson, who is also a limited player. But at least Jackson made some plays. Orakpo? Nah. What they should do is get B. Jenkins as much experience as possible and then rotate him and Jackson the rest of the year. Orakpo is completely [a] waste.
Sorry to see Fletcher’s career end this way, but the team would be better with Barnett playing inside with Riley. He just isn’t getting it done. Always a liability against the bigger tight ends, he is now losing the battle in the hole to every running back we have faced this time. Kehl is a special teamer and not even a particularly good one at this point.
The secondary? Oh boy! You have guys like Amerson and Rambo who are taking their rookie lumps. They will get better. Hall and Wilson won’t. Did Biggers do anything except a block in the back on a return? He is just worthless as well. Doughty missed some tackles as well. We might as well rotate in Gumbs and Pugh. Simply little to lose at this point, and they might bring some energy to the secondary.
Meriweather? He is an injury waiting to happen. My guess is that he finds his way onto IR within the next 2 games. Tanard Jackson will be activated 15 minutes after he is cleared, but my feeling is it will happen no earlier than the bye.
I have seen enough of Rocca. He needs to go also.
So, what happens now? We get to play 2 more flawed teams with a reasonable chance to go into the bye at 2-2. On the other hand, Detroit has Megatron , Stafford, and a big time defensive line. What scares me more is Reggie Bush. If he is no longer hurt, we have another back who could hurt us badly. I think we will play better, but am not sure if the result turns out that different. On the other hand, Schwartz is a chump of a coach and they are about as undisciplined a team as we are. I like our chances if we can keep from getting blown out in the first half.
Maybe Haslett needs to come down from the booth to get a closer look at the carnage? Someone needs to light a fire under this defense.
