Munching the hailRedskins.com Mock Draft Database

The Largest NFL Mock Database on the web has been substantially updated this morning and this weekend. Ton of drafts have their latest mocks out. This is by far the largest year ever for the NFL Mock Database. It is some kind of super phenomenon and it is not contained to just the NFL. Our NBA Mock Database at DC Pro Sports Report is posting it’s largest numbers of traffic ever, and we are still months out from the NBA draft. Mocking seems to be a super fad that grows with each year.

Whether they are professional draft services, such as scouting and media agencies, fan based websites like hR, or just personal super draft fans, mocks are everywhere. We have 257 mock drafts listed in the Database today. Last year we had 193, the year before we reached 140.

With the draft now just less than a week away, we not only updated our draft links and dates, but also crunched the Database for Redskins fans. We again, do it both by Position and by Players. The Database has proven exactly what it has all along — for the first time in years, not only are we unclear about the players the Redskins will look a, but also the position. We all kind of had an inkling we were targeting Laron Landry last year. It wasn’t a big surprise at all. The year before, only having a second round selection, again, it came down to Rocky McIntosh, which again, wasn’t a surprise by Redskins fans or the database. Finally, the two years prior to that, all mocks were pretty much on board with Jason Campbell at #21, and the majority of mocks had the Skins taking Carlos Rogers at #9. And th year before that, everyone knew the Skins were down to Sean Taylor and Kellen Winslow with the majority predicting Taylor.

This year there is absolutely NO consensus on position or player. However, the percentage picking DE over WR has grown and player wise, we have a new first overall consensus choice. Here they are …

POSITION CONSENSUS:

1. Defensive End: 49.5%

2. Wide Receiver: 34%

3. Offensive Line: 6.5%

4. Defensive Tackle: 4%

5. Corner back: 3.5%

Almost half of the 222 mock drafts we munched are now thinking the Redskins will go Defensive End at #21, despite comments by the Redskins VP Vinny Cerrato and Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache lowering expectations by saying that DE was not a top, top priority. Comments by Jim Zorn and Joe Bugel point to seriousness in bolstering the offensive line. Yet, just 6% of mocks have the Redskins looking at OL. Quite interesting.

PLAYER CONSENSUS:

1. DE Phillip Merling: 21%

2. DE Calais Campbell: 19%

3. WR Limas Sweed: 12%

4. WR Malcolm Kelly: 6.5%

5. DE Derrick Harvey: 5.5%

DE Phillip Merling knocks DE Calais Campbell out of the top spot. Campbell was dogged by comments of poor work ethic and a bad combine report. In fact, most think the Redskins could nab Campbell at #51 in the second round, yet, 19% of mocks still have the Redskins taking Campbell at #21.

Offensive lineman most mentioned are OT Chris Williams and OG Brandon Albert. Williams is the most intriguing, yet only 2 mocks have him projected to the Redskins.

TRENDS:

Going Up: Obviously Phillip Merling taking over the top spot has his trend on the way up. We are also seeing a new increase in numbers for WR James Hardy.

Going Down: DE Calais Campbell is no longer the top choice. S Kenny Phillip peaked at 9, is down to 5. WR Devin Thomas once surged to 17 mocks, is down to 9. WR Malcolm Kelly was challenging Limas Sweed, but no longer, he has dropped from high teens and low 20s to 14 mocks.
