When It Rains, It Pours
The Redskins lost another home game today losing to the Atlanta Falcons 24-17 extending their streak of home losses to 8. That’s just pathetic. Not only did they lose the game but Billy Cundiff missed another 31-yard field goal. The Redskins definitely need to make a move this week with the kicking game. My guess is Gano will be brought back.
Adding salt to the wound, Robert Griffin III when down and left the game with what is being reported as a concussion. He was hit in the head while trying to extend a 3rd down play in the 2nd half. This is something Redskins fans have feared for awhile now. In my opinion he didn’t have to take the hit. I understand he was trying to make a play but he should have just heaved that ball up into the upper deck, take the field goal and move on. He wasn’t hit much today as there was only one play designed for him to run. Hopefully, he’ll pass all of the test and play against the Vikings next week.
Alfred Morris continues to shine and this is where I have a problem with today’s offensive game plan. Morris, at one point was averaging around 6.7 yards per carry and I don’t think offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan ran the ball enough. Instead, he got cute with the direct snap to Morris and an end around to WR Leonard Hankerson. He should have just pounded the ball with Morris but this is Kyle we’re talking about. Morris finished the game with 135 combined yards with 115 of those yards coming on the ground.
The defense played well for the first 3 quarters holding the Falcons to 7 points and not allowing the Falcons offense to explode. They did give up 17 points in the 4th quarter and that is unacceptable. They gave up a 18 yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones and allowed Michael Turner to run for 13 yard touchdown. Kicker Matt Bryant added a 53 yard field goal in between. He nailed a 53-yarder and we can’t hit a 31-yarder.
Garcon was invisible today with only 3 catches for 24 yards. He dropped several passes today that hit him in the hands but it looked as though he was trying to make a move before getting the ball. He needs to step up his game if he’s supposed to be our #1 receiver.
Kirk Cousins filled in for RG III and came out throwing. He completed a 4 yards pass to Josh Morgan but the offense went thee and out on that series. The offense got the ball back early in the 4th quarter and threw a beauty of a pass to a wide open Santana Moss for a touchdown making the score 17-14 Redskins. Trying to rally the team back late in the 4th quarter, Cousins threw two interceptions. The first came with 2:46 left in the game and the 2nd came when the Skins took over with 1:21 left on the game clock and trailing by 7. He threw a pass over the middle that was intercepted by the Falcons. GAME OVER and it’s raining.
The news of the week will be the status of Robert Griffin III. He did tweet that he is OK and play next week after passing all of the test that are required for a player diagnosed with a concussion. Let’s hope this is the case.
