First off, this is a fantastic site! I just stumbled onto it and don't think i'll be leaving it anytime soon.

Now to the topic. I know G.W. runs a very aggressive style defense using more formations and plays then most other Def Coordinators out there. Now G.W. has always been a fan of the 46 defense. He's even done instructional video's on how to run it. Its all speculation and lord knows being a redskins fan thats what we loved to do this time of year, do you think that he'll try to implement it here? I know he ran it up in Buffalo... at least a variation of it anyways. It would be sweet if he does, i've always been a fan of it... gotta love a defense that knows one thing... ATTACK!!!

Its great to be a skins fan!!!

Heh, well I'm all with ya on the 46, but Williams said he's gonna run a base 4-3 and implement the 46 maybe a third of the time or so. I'd like to see it more, but them's the breaks.

And, hey, welcome to the site, we're glad you wanna stick around.

anyone who doesn't think defense is all about "Attack" should just look at how effective a prevent defense is ... it prevents your team from holding a lead and nothing more ...

Bring it on Mr. Williams (can't wait!)

The best thing about G. Williams is that he will mold the defense to the available talent. Since we are deficient in several areas of the defense [and unlikely to fix all of them before the season starts] his creativity will bring us higher than the individual pieces.

The whole (under his leadership) will be greater than the sum of the parts. I see a pretty wild mix of formations to confuse and perplex the offensive coordinators - which will partially compensate for our weak DL.

Just don't expect miracles - we're a few impact defensive players short of a top-notch defense. Remember we just lost a Pro Bowl CB and were #27 in defense last year.

How much 46 we'll play will all depend on Matt Bowen.

From watching him last year, he isn't afraid to come up and challenge somebody.

However, he certainly doesn't have the savvy of a John Lynch or the physicality of a Roy Williams.

IMHO, we don't have the safety personnel to run a 46 consistantly.

Expect alot because that is what Gibbs/Williams will expect from whom ever lines up for them on sunday. I believe the defence has already improved from last years unit. Lack of coaching and discipline was the problems of the team last year. Every week almost you heard about this player and that going to Snyder with gripes. Funny thing since Ramsey/agent went crying to Snyder last month things have quieted down. I am pretty sure he had to explain to them that those are Gibbs Trophies sitting in the lobby of Redskin Park.

What exactly is a 4-6 defense? Four lineman and 6 DB's?

After reading up on this, it seems as if the line must be a pretty disciplined group, this was obviously not our strong point last season, Williams will need to pull this bunch together and get them focused for this defensive strategy to work correctly.

It sounds good, and me, being the Bowen fan that I am, would like to see him being used in a targeted way such as this.

I answered my own question. Sounds like the D-line needs to be able to hold their own.

It also sounds very risky. Audible in to a counter, with motion to the weakside from a WR and it's a nice 6-8 yard gain. I founf this on a website.

A 46 defense involves bringing the strong safety up to play as another linebacker. He's lined up with the other three, and each is "stacked" behind one of the four DLs. The free safety is lined up in the middle of the formation rather to the weak side. It's an aggressive style of defense that features a lot of bump-and-run coverage and blitzing.

The D-line must be able to occupy all five offensive linemen in order to free up incoming blitzers, as well as allow the linebackers and strong safety to stuff the run quickly. It's more of a high-risk/reward system than a standard 4-3, but, as seen in Buffalo last year with the #2 defense, it can be quite effective.

Joedaschmoe gave a good jist of what the 46 defense is. Its a very aggressive defense that will reap plenty of awards, but can be liable to give up some big plays as well.

My biggest concern would be Matt Bowen like many of you here. The strong safety in this defense needs to be one helluva athlete and know how to really stick someone. You never know, with Sean Taylors size, if we were to get him, maybe he can be moved over to SS instead of FS... tho I really don't know much about him as far as being physical.

Thanks for the welcome, I will be sticking around for a while... best damn skins site yet

We will be running plenty of different sets and give many different looks. I doubt the 46 will be used all that much as it wasn't the primary set in Buffalo. I don’t think we have the line or the FS and SS to run the 46 without problems, which is why getting either Taylor or Udeze is so important.
