View Full Version : We are better than we were last year...

Coaching:

Joe Gibbs (O) - Need say more? He will grind yards, keep our D off the field, and score enough points to win the game.

Gregg Williams (D) -While he may have strugged as a Head Coach, his Ds have always been solid to great. I like how he is aggressive instead of reactionary.

Offense:

QB - Brunnel is better than Ramsey - there I said it. While he is 33, he is a perfect ball control QB, makes good decisions, and is a great play action QB (aren't all lefties?). Ramsey is the best backup in the league and we won't miss a beat if and when he comes in.

RB - Portis = Stud. Some say he is a product of Denver's system and they have had some productive RBs. However, how many of them have gone for over 1500 in consecutive seasons? (only Davis?) Count on Clinton to have another 1500 this year. Betts is a quality good backup.

FB/HB - I think we will lose Johnson to the Saints. That means the Rock will have to step up. Rock was soemwhat exposed on blocking last year, so he needs to improve. However, how much can be attributed to the scheme. A wildcard here is the possibility of drafting Winslow to play HB. I think he would be dominant at the position. Another possibility is Mike Sellers, who has had good years in the past.

TE - Rasby is a great blocker, which is a must in a Gibbs Offense. Royal may be cut if Winslow is drafted. Obviously, Winslow could play TE as well.

OL - No position will benefit more from the new regime than these guys. I think Samuels and Jansen will have good to great years. SS's system really put these guys on an island last year with little help, nonstop blitzing with no hot read, and an opposing D expecting pass. The interior is solid if not spectacular. Thomas is a stud and Dockery showed flashes of superior play. Look for Raymer to start at Center, with Friedman being the swing lineman (ala Raleigh McKenzie).

DL - Made us all yell and scream last year with their inability to stop the run or rush the passer. Renaldo Wynn is solid against the run but provides little pass rush. That is all we can expect from him. We need Griffin to step up and play solid against the run and get 4 sacks. We need Noble to play tough against the run for 2 downs and then give way to a someone faster on passing downs. Upshaw and Daniels really need to play well. We need 6-7 sacks from that end position. Look for a Daniels, Wynn, Griffin, Upshaw lineup on passing downs. Of course, this position could be addressed in the draft, with Udeze being the top choice of many.

LB - LaVar will be playing weakside LB, which means he lines up away from the TE and can think less and freelance more. Lavar, just follow the ball and destroy everything in front of you! I really expect Trotter to flourish in this attack-style D, like he did in Philly. Finally. we needed to pick up Washington to play the SLB. He is big enough to handle TEs and made big plays last year for the Colts. Mitchell is a solid backup. This is a position of strength for the Redskins.

CB - I hated losing Champ, but the fact remains that he didn't want to be here any longer and would have held out if no trade was made. I like our CB depth. Smoot played better than Champ last year, even though Champ usually drew the tougher assignment. Springs is a stud - when on the field. If he can stay healthy, he is a top-flight CB. Same with Walt Harris, who was the Colts best CB last year. Brown and Bauman are solid and can make plays. We are strong here.

S - Sean Taylor - Everyone's All American. If drafted, he would come in and start at FS for the considerable future. That would allow Bowen to move exclusively to his natrual position at SS. If Taylor is not drafted, look for IFFY and Bowen to man those positions like they did last year. Solid, but not great.

K - John Hall - We have a kicker!!!!

P - Tom Tupa is entering his 47th year in the NFL. He is an upgrade over Barker and his displaced nose, however.

On paper – we are in the off-season superbowl once again. Yeah – there have been some moves that have definitely improved this team. ……. The ingredients are mostly there – now they just need to be put together to make a good recipe.

Joe Gibbs himself makes us stronger and better than a Steve Spurrier run Redskisn team. If Spurrier woudl have returned I woudl have no wishes for anything better than 8-8

Good points. The biggest improvement will be our coaching staff (in its entirety).

Last year we had a college head coach, with college assistant coaches and nfl assistants with little experience.

This year, we have Joe Freakin' Gibbs as Head Coach. He has years of experience and 3 Super Bowl rings. We also have expierienced coaches (and former NFL head coaches) Joe Bugel and Greg Willams. The whole coaching staff has far more experience plus a better work ethic, and will put our players in a better position to make plays. The aquisition of Portis & Co. doesn't hurt, though.

It's March, guys. We're always better in March. It's September that seems to be a problem for us. And October. And November. Oh, and we mustn't forget December.

January is okay, though. Usually get plenty of rest in January.

We are better for sure. The problem is that the Eagles and Cowpokes have improved as well.

That is very true for every coach we have had since Gibbs left. Gibbs is back in town now. So that will change. Every single year he coached ALL of his teams finished strong. So there is no reason what so ever to think that this trend for Gibbs will not continue again. Coaching is the biggest improvement for the Washington Redskins this off season. It is good to have a coach again.

Either way... there is enough evidence to atleast have a tad bit of confidence that we can play against the Eagles and the Cowboys this season (unlike the past 3)... I feel this will be an outright war from week one.

Can't argue with that.

Yeah, and we were better last year than the one before. I am a huge Gibbs fan, but he has been out of the game for a long time, I am not so sure that losing Bailey will not cause problems (Springs could be done). I want to see it before I am a believer.
