Yes, the Redskins gave up too much for Portis. That's no knock on Portis, who I think will be terrific with the Redskins. But our best defensive player AND a high second round pick? Ouch!

I couldn't agree more.

we were losing bailey as it was...the whole FO has said that he basically made it impossible for himself to stay and play another year...Portis will be amazing under Gibbs which will more than pay off what we gave up for him

I think not but nothing is a sure thing. If Portis gains 1500 yards and we ride his back to the SB...oh YEAH !

I agree, he was leaving anyways, rumor has it that nobody was offering two 1st rounders. So in reality we got a 23 year old two time NFL 1500 yd running back for a 1st (what other teams were offering for Bailey) and 2nd round pick. I think we made out better than if we got say a #6-20 1st round pick for Bailey.

While I do not like giving up the 2nd round pick, it had to be done. Portis' value was clearly higher than that of Bailey. Portis is a difference maker. He makes plays. The trade was commensurate with his value.

It really does hurt. I think something could have been worked out because Denver needed to get rid of Portis just as bad as we had to get rid of Bailey.

I can't overlook the fact that he is one of the best RB's in the league, and when one is available you might have to pay more than you wish to, doesn't mean you're overpaying.

I agree with both sides: its a lot, but if we get Barry Sanders like production w/our Bugle line itll be worth that and more. I've only seen a few of the Riggins games on tape, how does Portis match up with him talent wise?

We cant really afford to pay a high first and a high second round pick at this point anyways with our cap trouble, so I am not too worried about giving up the 2nd rounder. I'll take Portis for Chump and a second rounder any day. If you need a reminder that Chump was overrated, just watch the tape of the Tampa Bay game from last year ... and yes that was Keyshawn Johnson RUNNING right past Chump.

No, I don't think we overpaid, for the reasons already stated.

Said no because I like getting Portis, and getting Champ out of our system. Champ was going to be franchised and play a media frenzied season that was going ot only be a distaction. Good move.

yes they did... they gave up champ who is arguably the best corner in the league... defenately top 3... and not only that, but we gave up our second round pick... a high one too...

I voted yes on this one. I don't see why we had to give up a 2nd rounder and a 4 time pro bowler.

I'm torn............. but I went with YES!Ok, it's just with our lack of picks,we didnt need to send the high 2nd for him.Bailey wanted out and everyone new it.Thats what really hurt us and Champ made it clear to all with his non chalant attitude about even negotiating with the FO.All that being said he was still suppose to be the best CB in the league, certainly Denver thought so.Portis is just as good IMO at his position as Bailey. No need to give picks when we could have filled a hole elsewhere and acquired picks.Denver asked for too much and got it.I like Portis but we had to resign him just like they did Champ. It should have been even steven.

We gave up a 2nd round pick for Portis. I hardly see that as being too much for a guy of his ability and stature in this league.

Bailey/Reale made it clear to Gibbs that he would holdout and not play for the tender, so we got rid of Bailey in exchange for cap space to plug other needs, not just one position. I'll make the trade for valuable cap space in exchange for a player that wishes not to be here any day of the week.

i read where denver was asking a first and second rounder for portis and some teams were willing. the skins gave that up in effect with bailey and the second. at first i didnt like it, but no one was going to give up a lot for bailey and then re-sign him, and portis contract was very cap friendly. i think the skins upped his pay just to be cool and make other free agents like us.

My sentiments as well.

Bailey was gone - there was no way to keep him..... in a year he would have left and we would have got NOTHING for him.

Most draft picks are BUSTS. I just read something like only 33% of 1st and 2nd rounders really do anything for the teams [5 yr study]. 33%!!! So we got Portis in exchange for a 1 in 3 chance draftee.

When Portis has a 1500+ yd season, 10 +TDs AND helps transform the offense into a power machine, everyone will stop crying here.

Meanwhile Champ will have a few interceptions; will not be as "shutdown" as everyone says and eventually will be let go in 2-3 years for cap reasons.

Champ wanted out - there was no way to keep him. Portis will tear up the NFC East.

HAIL!

For all those times I was screaming at the tv last season, "WHY DID WE LET DAVIS GO?"

I will vote NO, but I have said in the past that I wish our 2nd round pick didn't have to go as well...

We had an unhappy player with one year left on a contract threatening to not play that was counting more then 6 million against the cap by having him on the roster. We got a top five running back in a trade for him, removing the headache with him hanging around and set a Gibbs rule for the future "Only players that want to play will be on the team". With the freed cap money we picked up D Lineman, LB's, CB, and a punter. We gave up a second round pick for those players. So for those that think a second rounder was too high please tell me how we would have gotten the other FA's if Champ was still around?

Also Champ is good, probably top 3 CB's in the league today but does anyone see him as a future Hall of Fame player? I don't. He's got another 3 good years under his belt and will start to decline. If Portis can keep those numbers up for another 5-7 years he would be and he is younger.

Hmmmmmm ........... This should have been a one&one exchange of players. ........ We'll have to see how the year plays out to see who got the better end of this deal (right now I'm leaning towards Denver).
