5 Soldiers Killed Near Baghdad; Violence Flares Up in Fallujah
Bodies Burned, Mutilated in Fallujah Attack

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A bomb exploded under a U.S. military vehicle west of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing five soldiers, the military said. At least four people, including one American and possibly other foreign nationals, were killed in a separate attack. Crowds burned and mutilated their bodies.

The explosive device that killed the American soldiers blew up when their vehicle ran over it, U.S. Army Col. Jill Morgenthaler said in Baghdad. The attack occurred in Anbar province, which encompasses Fallujah, Ramadi and other towns where anti-U.S. insurgents are active.

Residents said the bomb attack occurred in Malahma, 12 miles northwest of Fallujah.

In an unrelated attack Wednesday, gunmen in Fallujah attacked two civilian cars that residents said were carrying foreign nationals. The occupants of the cars were killed and their vehicles were set on fire. Witnesses saw at least four bodies.

Footage from Associated Press Television News showed a charred body of one of the slain men, and the targeted vehicles in flames nearby. Some of the slain men were wearing flak jackets, said Safa Mohammedi, a resident.

APTN footage showed one American passport near a body.

Another resident, Abdul Aziz Mohammed, said angry crowds dragged the bodies through the streets, dismembered them and hanged some of the mutilated corpses. One man beat a corpse with a metal pole. Residents tied a cord to another body, tied it to a car and drove it down a street.

"The people of Fallujah hanged some of the bodies on the old bridge like slaughtered sheep," Mohammed said. "I saw it myself."

The identities of the slain men were unclear. One resident displayed what appeared to be dog tags taken from one body. Residents also said there were weapons in the targeted cars.

Exactly! Remember all those quotes from the Bush regime about how the Iraqis would welcome us with hugs, kisses, and flowers thrown at the feet of our soldiers? So much for all that. Just another filthy lie from an administration of incompetent liars.Iraqis Drag Four Corpses Through Streets

By SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press Writer

FALLUJAH, Iraq - Jubilant residents yanked the bodies of four foreigners — one a woman, at least one an American — out of their burning cars Wednesday, dragged the charred corpses through the streets, and hung them from the bridge spanning the Euphrates River. Five American troops died in a roadside bombing nearby.

The brutal treatment of the four corpses came after they were killed in a rebel attack on their SUVs in the Sunni Triangle city about 35 miles west of Baghdad, scene of some of the worst violence on both sides of the conflict since the beginning of the American occupation a year ago.

It was reminiscent of the 1993 scene in Somalia, when a mob dragged the corpse of a U.S. soldier through the streets of Mogadishu, eventually leading to the American withdrawal from the African nation.

In one of the bloodiest days for the U.S. military this year, five American troops died when their military vehicle ran over a bomb in a separate incident 12 miles to the northwest, among the reed-lined roads through some of Iraq (news - web sites)'s richest farmland.

Residents said the bomb attack occurred in Malahma, 12 miles northwest of Fallujah, where anti-U.S. insurgents are active. U.S. Marines operate in the area, but it was unclear whether the slain troops were Marines.

Chanting "Fallujah is the graveyard of Americans," residents cheered after the grisly assault on two four-wheel-drive civilian vehicles, which left both in flames. Others chanted, "We sacrifice our blood and souls for Islam."

Associated Press Television News pictures showed one man beating a charred corpse with a metal pole. Others tied a yellow rope to a body, hooked it to a car and dragged it down the main street of town. Two blackened and mangled corpses were hung from a green iron bridge across the Euphrates.

"The people of Fallujah hanged some of the bodies on the old bridge like slaughtered sheep," resident Abdul Aziz Mohammed said. Some of the corpses were dismembered, he said.

Beneath the bodies, a man held a printed sign with a skull and crossbones and the phrase "Fallujah is the cemetery for Americans."

But I thought VP Cheney said we would be greeted with garlands and cheering, and he's never wrong....

George Bush screwed up Iraq so badly that we are doomed to failure there, say hello to the next afghanistan and to the next taliban like regime. Also, say hello to the newest terrorist organization that will call Iraq their home.

Just thought everyone would like to know the numbers from Iraq. As of now, 51 U.S. soldiers have died (http://lunaville.org/warcasualties/Summary.aspx) during the month of March. That makes March, so far, the third-bloodiest month for U.S. soldiers since the Iraq War began.

Lets just not politicize this one for now .. this was a particularly disturbing day for Americans.

Agreed. This is tragic, and it will be politicized by both parties soon enough. I take no joy in saying "I told you so" on this issue. Those are our people dying over there.

Fine. The Bush admin has openly politicized the Iraq War, beginning long before it actually began, but I'll hold off for one day. But that's it. I want the political monsters held responsible for putting our troops into such a beastly position.

A mature response and I thank you for it.

The problem is that both parties have gone from civility to full contact politics and neither will pass up anything they can use to slam their opponent. This is why I like the Official Senate Rules: No cut-downs(you have to say: "My learned fellow Senator is clearly wrong" or "is mistaken") and no critiques of members not in the chamber. But Nickles broke that when he slammed Kerry.

I saw the pixes and I am very disturbed. Americans came to other countries and trying to impose their ways of thinking without taking into consideration local mentality, nationalism, bigotry, ethnic pride, etc.. The result is that they hate us more than ever.

That stupid prezeldent obviously politicized the damn war for his own political gains. He is a grave robber ! Worse, he sent people to their death so he can flied into an aircraft carrier posing as a macho man !

Scanning the Internet I find quite a few right-wing Americans calling for the demolition of Fallujah and veiled demands for war crimes to be committed against Iraqis. Consider this from Fox News o'jackass Bill O'Reilly:O'REILLY: I don't care about the - colonel, I don't care about the people of Fallujah. You're not going to win their hearts and minds. They're going to kill you to the very end. They've proven that. So let's knock this place down.

COWAN: Let's get out of the way and let Iraqis knock it down, so we don't lose any more American lives.

O'REILLY: I don't believe - I absolutely don't believe they can do it. General, how do you see it?

VALLELY: Well, we've got to do it together. We've go to do it quickly. We've got to sanitize that whole city. And keep in mind, Bill, you set an example when you go in there to do that. And when do you that, you get respect. And that's why you go to be tough.

O'REILLY: All right, general, is there any.

VALLELY: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) clean it up.

O'REILLY: .you know it, the colonel knows it. The colonel and I are disagreeing on the tactics, but we know what the final solution should be. Why hasn't the U.S. command done this? And why do they continue to absorb the level of terror that is coming out of -- this isn't a big town. We're not talking about Cincinnati here. Right? It's not a big town? Isn't it funny how a year ago the American right wing was lavishing praise upon the Iraqis as a people who would welcome us as liberators and take to democracy like a moth to flame, but now are turning on those same people when things go wrong? [Well, it's not ha-ha funny, but you know what I mean.] Of course, some of us were predicting exactly this sort of thing before the war even began, but why bother with facts and history when you can fall back on ideology? A pity the Iraqi people don't seem as impressed with neocon ideology as the White House is.
