I'm going with my pick from last year...Sammy Baugh...history's top punter with a 45.1 yd avg
...oh...he's not one of the choices?
Not an easy choice but, I'll go with Bragg for his consistency

Mike Bragg easily. Every punt was 39 yards and no return. At least that's what my dad tells me. His stats look pretty darn good on net average.

Where's Reggie Roby?
I asked the same thing, when I read the candidates, hmmm. Gibbs Girl brought up Sammy Baugh, as well. If memory serves me correct Sammy was an incredible punter, I believe he retired with the highest punting avg. in NFL history.

I posted this earlier.....I think that Cox was the best punter. He was consistant, and he would come in and Bang 55 yard Field goals in addition to his long kickoffs. I think he had the most to contribute out of all the punters listed.

I voted Turk because he is the only one I remember seeing in action.
Although if he was in the poll, my vote would have definately gone for Sammy Baugh.

Since Baugh was not a choice, I went with Bragg. I kinda wanted to vote for Turk -- he was a stud but he went out in such a horrible, embarrassing way...

Him and his brother both.
My vote goes to #88 in your GameDay # 1 in your heart - Pat Richter. Could have been our last true two way player.

I went with Bragg.
He's a great guy who I've talked to several times also.

I always liked Hayes, he was a threat to run a fake every time he punted. His only downside was that he took long strides, which is one reason he got blocked in Super Bowl 18, that a missed assignment by Otis Wonsley.
I still remember the year Hayes ran 70 some yards on a fake punt, during the 83 season I believe.

Gotta go with Baugh. If that isn't an option I guess I have to go with Turk, but really is not much to choose from:
Hayes- only around 2 years, never averaged over 39 yards. Was fun to watch on the fake runs
Bragg- stuck around forever, but never was more than average. Average was consistently 40 yards/
Cox: Solid, hell of a leg. Used to outkick his coverage though.
Turk: Great punter, mid 40's average, but not a great basketball player and loses points for having a broth who couldn't snap (RIP-Dan)

Post got wiped out with the new changeover, Bragg vote here! When he came in the game you knew there would be no mistakes! Period! Spence your father is 100% right as I remember, with Bragg there was no prepunt worries or dread! Never a muff/shank, also superior directional skills. Little or no return as it almost seemed he intentionally was aiming the ball at his lead men on coverage rather than just avoiding the returner. Some of the other guys maybe had more leg but Bragg gets my vote for ripping down the "LOSERS" sign over the REDSKINS tunnel at Dallas, last game of 76!!!

I'm old enough to remember quite a few of those. Your dad was right. He rarely hit the boomers but seldom shanked one.

Sorry guys I just don't get it. Is Bragg the best punter, or the punter that we remember because he was around 11 years and his last name isn't Turk?
I guess I can buy the we never saw Sammy, but he does hold the season and career punting record. But Turk was better on every key dimension. See below.
Highest average career:
Baugh 45.1 (NFL record)
Baker 44.9
Turk 44.2
Most punts season
Bragg 78 103
Bragg 77 91
Turk 98 93
Most punts inside 20, season
Turk '98 33
Turk '97 32
Bragg '77 29
Turk '95 29
Hayes '83 29
Pro Bowls
Turk 3 (in 5yrs)
Bragg 0 (in 11 yrs)
Net average
Bragg 32.9,35.1,33.9,34.1 (stat started in1976)
Turk -37.7,39.2,39.2,39,35.6
Most punts inside 20 season
What am I missing?

Him and his brother both.
I think his brother, Dan Turk, died of like brain cancer or something, and supposedly Cory Raymer was the only member of the Redskins (players + FO) who bothered to visit him in the hospital...so I can't blame either of them for bad-mouthing the Redskins..(although Matt had that basketball injury that he pretended happened in practice or something, which was pretty stupid)
