Gardener a Bengal

O'Neal will not be the only former Bronco in Cincinnati this season. The Bengals have reached agreement with defensive tackle Daryl Gardener on a four-year, incentive-laden, $9.3 million contract that will be announced this week.

The Broncos will release Gardener after June 1, at which point he officially will be allowed to sign with the Bengals. Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis was Gardener's defensive coordinator in Washington.

it was a big mistake not keeping him.....

Gardner had one good year. He was awful the year before he played for us in Miami and he was awful the year after he played for us in Denver.

That is not the kind of player I want in DC. I want someone who will be dependable year after year. Gardner plays well when HE wants to. Good riddance. And good luck to Marvin Lewis....He'll need it.

Marvin could have some tools on defense. If he gets A Hurricane at backer he could be dangerous.

I don't know about this, on the one hand he was good in 02, but his recent off field problems and locker room problems are a problem. I don't know, I think we need another player on the d-line before the season.

Darrell Gardener [who played a season here in 2002] has been signed to a multiyear deal at Cincinnati. Redskins said they were not interested in Gardener anyway, but one more DL FA pickup is gone.

What say all you posters who keep telling us we are going to magically fix our DL with the June 1 FA cast-offs? Who?

My second thought: The 'skins have not yet brought in Udeze or Smith for interviews to Redskin Park. Tommy Harris seems to be the main DL point-of-interest. If they trade Samuels [Cleveland or Houston]- will it be to try to get Harris? I'm assuming that we do keep our # 5 for Winslow or Taylor.

Of course, as with many fans and even on a fairly regular basis with the Washington area columnists, Gardner (i.e., Rod) is often substituted for Gardener (i.e, Daryl). Just a lil pet peeve.

This is the week the Skins are to meet with the potential defensive draftees.Look for those guys and more to interview. Most of the draft boards that I've seen lately have us taking Harris,if we draft a defensive lineman.

I'm sorry that Gardener signed elsewhere.I liked that guy,he could dominate a game.I had the pleasure to speak to him on numerous occasions at the team hotel prior to the games. He is one intense individual and seemed to be a loner. He was courteous though. We could have used his strength and quickness.

He's now back with Coach Lewis - Good for him!! There is no doubt that he'll get back on the right track there - I'll bet he has an outstanding year.

Yep - I"M STILL very concern about how the D-Line is not being addressed AND there is nothing left FA wise to really pick from and don't see much being availible come 6/1. WE could address some of this with our #5 but it doesn't look like that will happen either ....... don't know, I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out the game plan here.

Bottom of Denver Post article.

Axe - very good post about Gardener. i just think that Gibbs only wants to deal with players who will completely buy into his system. Joe Gibbs is in his 60's - so time is short. He doesn't want to waste time on players who may be head cases, problem children, etc. For that reason I believe the FO really had no real interest in Russell or Gardener.............

Harris is intriguing because he continually gets mentioned by Gibbs in interviews. Nothing real obvious, but his name keeps getting brought up.

IMHO the 'skins will not go for Gallery, but are getting teams interested in Samuels. I would be surprised now if Chris WAS NOT traded by draft day.

I could see us getting Taylor and Harris // or Winslow and Harris.

If he listens to marvin like he did when he was with us, he will have a great year.

I have made a few mistakes - good to ask for a source. IMHO, I'm glad Gardener went to Cincy - he was way too uncertain and unstable to count on. Kind of like buying a lottery ticket.....................
