Brian Mitchell, Darrell Green was the guy I wanted to vote for but from a consistent standpoint Mitchell set the standard for all punt returners in nfl history.

Brian Mitchell - HOF
Wish he had played out here. He is the quintessential Redskin, IMHO.
Hated that General Schottenheimer let him go - to the Eagles of all teams!!!

I vote for Nelms. I love Mitchell but if I had to pick between the two in their prime I just prefer Nelms. Yea Mitchell had the longest career and probably will be known as one of the best ever. Nelms, to me at least, always seemed to be more exciting.

NO CONTEST ... Mike Nelms ... running away
if you didn't see him you shouldn't jump to the conclusion that Mitchell is better just because Mitchell was here doing it so long. Also ... I kind of liked Jennings who took Nelms spot when he retired but hey what can I say ... I knew him in college. Of course I never saw Speedy play either ... maybe he's the best one ... oh well

Seems to be a few missing off of there ......... Thankfully one of them was Ricky Harris (I know 95% don't remember BUT his nickname was "WrongWay" if that any clue)

Sentimental vote for DG and the bears punt return.

Mitchell by a mile. Truth be told, Mitchell was just a pretty good kick returner. As a punt returner, however, he might be the best in NFL history.

I was vocal in My support for Nelms on the Kick Returner thread, this however is no contest. Brian Mitchell hands down.

D. Green COULD have been the best but, didn't get enough reps to count. Mitchell is without a doubt the best. It seems the Skins have had solid return guys as long as I can remember except for the Gap between Morton and Mitchell. I remember Tony Green was a great KR and Eddie Brown was a pretty good PR. What ever happened to those guys?

I was a Mitch. Anybody who can stay in the league purely for their punt-return skills warrants a vote. He took one back just about every year.

Well someone as old or older than I am to remember these guys! Another poster mentioned Speedy Duncan remember him from the George Allen days?

Keino and I whole-heartedly agree on this subject.

Darrell Green could have been the greatest if it had been his job. If the question was who was the most dangerous punt returner? I would have selected Darrell Green. My answer to this question? Brian Mitchell again, best return man in NFL history.

My favorite - Eddie Brown. Hey it was only 1 year but he was amazing in '76 or so. Seemed like every week he'd break open the game or get them back in it with a return. Old timers will remember him. I had to have a 25 jersey. I loved that muddy return (against the Cardinals I think, maybe a Monday night?).
The best though was Nelms (at punt returning). A lot like Mitchell in that he took it straight up the field every time. Unlike Mitchell in that he never had a fair catch (I think he was charged with one for his career because of a technicality). Definite game-changer.
Of course Mitchell had the all-around game. Punt and kickoff returns, coverage teams, runner, passer, receiver, blocker. He's one of a kind.

Eddie Brown? Not questioning you, I was ready to credit Nelms with that!!! SKINS DECK CARDS 20-10! Awesome game!

Jon - nah, that was too early for Nelms. He didn't show up til '80. I was still in high school for this play so it had to be before '77. I think that 20-10 game might just be the one. Week 7 in '76. You remember the play? It was like he was running in slow motion because of the mud - must have taken him 15 seconds to cover 70 yards! Heck, he wasn't that fast to begin with!

Agreed, my vote went to the NFL's all time total yardage leader...Brian Mitchell. I just hope we can sign him for a cheap contract like we did for Art Monk so that BMitch can retire as he should...a Redskin.

Sydsho, Let me welcome you to the site! Oh yeah! I remember the play! That had to be one of the best games ever on MNF! Must of been 76-77 because Allen was coaching and my hero, Billy GUTS Kilmer was qb! I do remember it ended 20-10! Loved those old games vs The Cards! They were a badass team! Matter of fact, I can't remember exactly which show it was, but a tv football show had highlights of that game with Coryiel? standing in the rain with "There's got to be a morning after" playing background music! Would love to see that game on espn classics!!! Again Welcome to the site! p.s. If he stays, somebody give Chris an Conrad Dobler injection!!!!!!!!

What I loved most about Mike Nelms is he never would fair catch. If they wanted to punt they knew it was going to be returned. And he never fumbled.
