View Full Version : Where's the Beast?

Sean Taylor is supposed to be a 'beast', but I think it's interesting that he had a sub-par workout -- only 11 BP reps (Larry Fitz did 20), avg 40 time (4.51), and didn't run the agility/shuttles drills. He supposedly had a sore hamstring. But that was 2 months ago. Is he still injured or did he just not chose to workout again? Anyone know anything on that? If Taylor is the pick, I would feel a lot better about it had he tried to re-do his workout, or at least completed the drills he didn't do, as they would seem to be pretty important for a 'ball-hawking' safety.

Not sure Dexter72. I'm surprised of those numbers though....

OK did you happen to watch him play? The man makes plays and I don't care if he can bench press 225 twice (smoot only did it once). He can hit and catch the ball. He is more than an adequate Free Safety in league.

Once again too much stock in precombine numbers and not enough on on field play!

more than an adequate FS? if thats the best you can call him, i dont want him at #5.

Exactly how many bench presses and 40 yard dashes do you run during a football game.

Exactly, RichardBradley. You can't bring a weight bench and cones to a football game.

So why do all 32 teams go to the combine and fly around the country for individual workouts? You ever lineup against someone who can outbench you and/or run by you? You know you have to be perfect, and occasionally you get that sinking/hopeless feeling real quick.

the combine and individual work only shows how well you do in SHORTS! another way to bash on Taylor.. i guess he's that weak that he knocks ppl's socks off and off their feet w/ jarring hits that none of our safeties can come close to except for Bowen in PRACTICE.. Taylor actually does it on the field. combine work doesn't show one important aspect.. and thats how that player performs ON the field and not half naked.. plus if his workouts were so poor don't u think he would've scared off some teams and dropped?? all experts still rate him and Winslow as the best athlete AND player in this draft. go run off w/ those workout #s all u want.. i'll take the on-field performer.

I watched Sean Taylor dominate in college for 3 years.... That is more important than how macy cones he can jump through... You brought up the fact that Larry Fitzgerald did more reps on the bench than Taylor did... But when they played Sean shut him down all those benches didn't help him on the field

If weight strength has any importance, and it has very little, it's probably only for lineman. Maybe for linebackers too.

A safety actually is one position in which having a fast 40 is of need. That is why it is a safety, you are the last line of defense. Does every safety have a sub 4.5, no, but this is supposed to be a "special player". As far as 11 reps, that is pathetic from someone who was called the "best athlete" in the draft. Just remember the defense he had around him in Miami was overwhelming compared to the opposition. Many of this interceptions were running under ducks caused by QB pressure. I sure hope he lives up to the hype that has been created. You will be hearing from us if he is not.

Yeah, good point After all, strength training in general is not often even conducted for NFL players other than linemen, right?

At his weight (230) the fact he cannot press 225 more than 11 times proves either he is either lazy or not the athlete that he was projected as being. You cannot have it both ways.

my point. 40 time doesnt mean too much since they arent running it with pads on.

Even though he didn't do what people thought he would, he was still above average in the 40. Plus he is stil bigger than Recievers and has enough size to fight with TE if he has to. He is a FS.

Does not matter. Leg turn over is leg turn over and the ablity of a safety to sprint is important since they are running after players with world class speed (WRs). Since both sides of the ball have pads on, it equals out.

Now, does a 40 time mean anything for defensive line, offensive line, QB, no. In fact, the 40 yard test originated as a assessment that was used for only WRs, DBs and RBs. My point is this 'athletic freak' should have tested better. Is he a good player, we will see.

Lets hope so. Remember, the guys he faced in college were tremendously over-matched. Miami lines up players on defense that overwhelm the opposition at every position. The Skins will not be doing that. We will see.

I know, RB...I saw enough of him to know he dominated, he was everywhere -- especially in big games. I just hope he can do the same in the pros when he's not playing on a defense that has infinitely more talent than the team he's matched up with. There obviously is a lot more to football than straight athletic ability - my point wasn't so much that we shouldn't have drafted him because of his workout, but I would have liked to see him step up and improve on his initial average workout. I'm sure Rosenhaus probably would have had a fit if he did, but I would have liked to see him do it.

His workout is old news. He's here now and will get plenty of strength training to prepare for the season. I wanted a DL draft pick as much as anyone, but Taylor's talent is rare and something we probably won't get a chance at over the next few years.

I'm glad he's here and look forward to his play in the NFL for our Redskins!

You guys that are bashing the pick of Sean Taylor, or the we'll see he better perform guys are hilarious. Buffalo had the second ranked D last year w/ an ok dline and no offense. My point? we've added two run stoppers to the dline, griffith,daniels... more speed to LB's, Depth and Experience at CB and the best young prospect there was available in the defensive backfield.

Not to mention an experienced QB, a top five running back and depth at oline
Enjoy the day man, it's not for sulking. Were gettin there, We will have a really good shot to let the league know the REDSKINS ARE BACK.

Tests don't mean anything!

I will bet that taylor if he laid down on the bench today could do 15 at least, think about it if you drop the bar to fast on the first rep you could destroy the rest of the reps.

4.5 isn't bad but i thik he is a 4.4 player and he will prove that.
