Just reading that article on the front page about him being a leader opened up my eyes. Smoot is the definition of a true Redskin. If he doesn't stay after next year, I don't know what I'll do. He is my favorite Redskin (sorry Coles, you've been outdone). I'm glad he stayed faithful to the troop. He's worked his ass off to get where he is today, and he's still trying to improve. I predict Fred will have a breakout year. What a great guy.

Holla. Smoot earns all of my respect for playing hard regardless of being next to a guy like Bailey. Smoot pwns Bailey in terms of Honor and Pride.

Gotta admit I had Smoot pegged wrong initially. He really earned my respect last year playing with a bruised sternum. So I concur. Smoot is the man!

what did yall think of that part of that article where arrington was saying no one realized smoot was throwing up at halftime, he was in so much pain with that broken sternum, he couldnt breath without pain and he kept playing and making tackles. they should re-sign him to a long term deal as soon as possible.

Yeah I agree. As soon as we get some cap room from Candidate/Friedman/Trotter/whoever after June 1st, sign a D-Linemen then sign Smoot long term! He's a beast with a heart of gold.

"I think a lot of people didn't know that he was throwing up and in tears in the locker room, he was in so much pain," linebacker LaVar Arrington recalled yesterday as the Redskins wrapped up minicamp. "I like Fred, but when I saw that, I became a Smoot fan. He really showed me something that you don't see in the NFL too often anymore, that throwback mentality: 'Let's just go. I'll hurt later.'"

Im sure Coach Gibbs feels like the rest of us do. He loves players that love the Redskins, and Smoot definately fits that mold.

im feeling a repeat of darryl green, a true Mr. Redskin, can we call him Mr. Redskin junior?

Sounds great to me. I'd welcome another Darrell Green. Only if Smoot was as fast. (Check out the sig also, just figured out how to do it)

It's good seeing the maturity of Smoot. He was a warrior last season playing injured on those last games. Hopefully he can build on his performance from last season because I can see Williams having him and Springs in alot of man coverage.

Hopefully we can get something done soon, it would break my heart to see him get away from us. We have the franchise tag to use on him, but... would love to see in B&G for the long run.

smoot has always had a fair number of interceptions, which i always thought was the result of teams not wanting to throw towards champ. i have been wondering if that trend would continue this year. i hope he leads the team in interceptions and returns a couple for touchdowns.

You can attribute the attention he got from teams on Champ for sure. On some of the interceptions he made the play but there were a few that were tipped and it landed in his arms. But, an int is an int no matter how you get it.

you got that right. would you throw at springs or smoot? i remember when barry wilburn led the team in int's and i thought he was aweful. my friends and me called him barry will-be-burned. it was all because green was on the other side. then against denver in the super bowl he got burned for that 80 yard touchdown on the first play from the 20. then later, he got an interception to help seal the win. i just hope smoot will get the int's and not get burned because i am hoping he'll be a great redskin for a long time.

Smoot is by FAR my fav Redskin at this point. That guy is involved in the community and gives every ounce of his heart and soul on the field. Sure he gives up a few completions by playing off a bit but man he comes up big when you need him to. I remember him sealing the Seahawks game. I'd like to see him line up at WR just to see what he can do. He might not be as big, fast or as strong as champ but he's 10x's the player/man champ is in my book. I hope the skins sign him for life.

Hail SMOOT!!!! And HTTR!!!!!!!!!!

Smoot is a straight up old-school warrior. It's great to see so much support and praise for him on this board--he's earned it and I have no doubt he'll continue to build his legend in years to come. As others have said, if we don't get him locked up with a long-term deal, we are crazy. sMOOOOOOOOOt !!!!

i love smoot's energy. its contagious on game days and he just has fun. i never realized how much he was hurting last year, i just knew he came back sooner than expected and played hard. you gotta love guys like that on your team.

Hopefully they will work on a contract extension like they did with Jansen and get it done. Smoot is a good cover corner, not great, but good. He has the potential to turn into a very good CB. He needs to grow ina regular scheme, and much like our other defensive stars, he needs stability. No plyaer, Arrington, Smoot, or whover, is truly going to develop to their full potential if philosophical changes to schemes are made year in and year out. The broken strenum injury and his subsequent play made me a Smoot believer.

Friedman? He isn't going to be released after June 1st! We just resigned him to a new deal this offseason.

I have been a Smoot fan for quite some time........I think Smoot did a great job of playing last year with that sternum injury.........Reading that post only re-affirmed my post that SMOOT should REMAIN a REDSKIN.........

Smooot earned the respect of a lot of folks last year. Hopefully, this year will be his breakout year where he makes the Pro Bowl. Sounds like he is maturing a little just like LaVar. Both are learning that it takes more than just physical talent to be the best. You have to out think and out-prepare your opponent.

And speaking of Fred Smoot always reminds me of one of my favorite Redskins moments......

My son and I went to Carlisle to see the Skins training camp in Smoot's rookie year. Practice was over and everyone was leaving. Something just told me to hang around. Well, a bunch of vets ganged up on Smoot and taped him to the goal post with athletic tape. We all laughed as the Redskins left the field while Smoot's legs and arms were flailing away. It was just hilarious. My son loves to tell that story to anyone who wants to listen.

Smooooot Da' Man!!

Yup. Maybe you are confusing Fiore? Friedman will likely start at Center.
