Everyone talks about the impending cap doom as they do every year. Well this is a thread that if this happens who are the 7 Redskins that must be kept, 3 offense, 3 defense, 1 wild card that no matter what happens to the cap must stay.
1. LaVar Arrington
2. Fred Smoot
3. Sean Taylor
4. Pat Ramsey
5. Clinton Portis
6. Lavernius Coles
7. Chris Sameuls/Jon Jansen
Opinions?

Nice list. I would put John Hall on that list, perhaps a reason he has no competition in camp thus far. Take Samuels off. He could be had for the right price. I also believe Bugel is very high on Dockery, and there is no chance of him moving anywhere.

good question. i'm not sure lavar's deal really locked him up as a long term redskin because he's due a 6.5 mil roster bonus in 2006 and roster bonuses count against the cap right away - they are not pro-rated like signing bonuses. i'd like to see portis, coles and jansen stay on offense, and add randy thomas to that. taylor is soon to be locked up long term, probably for 6 or 8 years. hopefully smoot will be too if he has a good year. with ramsey i guess it depends on wether or not he plays. i kind of hope he does not play, because then he might be easier to re-sign, and i do believe he will be great.

here's a good salary / "cap hit" table:
http://www.thehogs.net/html/Team/salary_table.php
lavar's cap hit in 2006 is 12.414 mil.

Agree with the entire list but I don't really think that Samuels is going to end up a Redskin for life. There are a lot more guys that just plain aren't going anywhere, like Brunell, Hall, Dockery, Thomas, Griffin, and Cooley, but I wouldn't call them untouchables like the guys you named. Those are 7 guys that other teams would have to blow the FO's socks off to get.

I don't see Smoot as an untouchable. I find it very easy to see him playing elsewhere soon.

Until we find some young gifted corners to replace him, I can't see Smoot going anywhere.

I'd like to see Hall on the list. Samuels will probably be gone unless he restructures. Agree with the rest.

This is a good question, I like your list and I would also like to see Hall on it. I don't think Ramsey's deal is a cap breaker, but his contract is up in a year or so. I like the Marcus Washington signing, but not sure if he'll be a long term guy.

I would say no one on this list is untouchable with the way the NFL is this day and age. The days of players like Darrell Green are almost at an end.

jansen is an iron man. samuels seems to have nagging injuries. the off-season shoulder surgery bugs me too. i think samuels is gone after june 1, i think that's why they brought in the young tackles. you could put 2 tackles over there and call one of them a tightend, plus sign a d-tackle and it still wouldnt cost a fraction of samuels money.

the players on your list though would be the reason why we make cuts. but anyways.....
defense: lavar arrington, fred smoot, sean taylor
offense: patrick ramsey, clinton portis, jon jansen
wildcard: derrick dockery
i dont think randy thomas or lavernaues coles will finish their contracts. they will be either cut or re-structured. they are just way too big(thanks snyder).

If you would have started this thread 2 years ago Champ Bailey would have been number one so no one is untouchable

Good List.I'd have to put Hall on that list.Anytime that you can have a kicker make 50 yd + field goals consistantly, you need to keep that weapon.

I like the list as well and Jansen should be on it. There's no way I would let Coles go either like some alluded to earlier.

I agree with the list for the most part........But I also see DMC & Coles sticking around for quite awhile-and possibly re-structuring to stay with the team.......

I agree. I have a gut feeling he's not going to be a Redskin for so long, although I wish he will.
Portis, Coles, Jansen....
Arrington,..... mmmm... I don't know, perhaps there is nobody untouchable left on the D besides Arrington.... maybe Taylor will be, when he gets a contract. Washington will probably be also. Maybe Martin Chase, lol.

Guys, they have been saying all this stuff ever since snyder took over. It only produced in it's first season. Division title and a hop skip and good kick away from playing for the super bowl. He tried again and failed miserably. And again. But the last to years have had a much clearer vision in terms of acquisitions. and have built something for the next 3-4 years. If you look at 2006 it's way overblown. So many changes will take place from now till then that I don't forsee us having a Cap meltdown at all.
The key to our plan is staying healthy in the first two years of these big contracts and producing on the field, ovs.
The List:
1.Portis
2.Ramsey
3.Thomas
4.Jansen
5.Coles
6.Lavarr
7.Taylor
8.Smoot
9.Washington
10.Griffith
These ten player will be skins for the next 3 yrs at least. If they perform well, It's not out of the question to be able to keep this Core for as long as we want. It's all about performance. We are letting trotter go for his performance. Why pay a guy what he's not worth. Leader in Tackles? Yes but also blower of very key plays at very big moments, and is slow.
Performance=These guys stay.

I'd bet at least one player on everyone's list eventually splits.

Personally I think the reason the FO wouldn't budge on the offer to Bailey was to have some money left over to budget at the CB position for Smoot.

good list. but thomas's number arent that bad:
'04: 2.000, 05: 3.600, '06: 4.500, '07: 5.000
neither are coles:
'04: 2.392, '05: 3.357, '06: 6.857, '07: 5.357
maybe coles restructures in '06, but those deals can get done.
i'm curious how lavar felt he had had a roster bonus of 6.5 Mil left out of '06 when he will already have a cap hit of 12.414 Mil in '06. is he saying he was supposed to carry a cap hit of 18.914 into '06? lavar, fire the postons! stay with the skins!

In this day and age everyone is "touchable". Anyone can be had for the right price...or given up for the wrong one.
