there have been a lot of articles written lately about the need for leaders to emerge from the roster. with bailey gone, smoot has been mentioned as a leader by example, playing after throwing up in pain during halftime with the cracked sternum, but he's young... i thought jessi armstead was the consumate leader on D, the thinking man's linebacker. now we have barrow back there...on offense coles has been a warrior, and jansen has been an iron man. randy thomas has quietly been the most consistent, but brunell brings playoff experience and hopefully leadership in the huddle. who would you guys pick as leaders? i'd pick brunell and barrow.

Jansen & LaVar

I think most people will say LaVar on D, but I'm going with Smoot and Springs, with Brunell and Coles on O.

i'd go with Jansen on the offense...he's been here long enough to legitimately take on that role and he's made it a point to learn what it means to put on the burgundy and gold. If you don't know what i'm talking about, go back and watch him on draft day...the man was amazing. Defense is a little harder. I think that one might be "committee" leadership. Barrow will definitely be involved, but he's a first year player on the team. Smoot will probably be there and I honestly think Arrington will step up and be a man and lead that defense like Lewis does in Baltimore.

i think you are right about barrow being too "new", but i think he will quickly emerge. you brought up arrington, and i really do hope you are right. if he can leave the business stuff to his no-account agents (or maybe change agents, so that he can leave that stuff behind?) and just focus on football, i think he will rock the nfl. i hope he leads the league in sacks, and i dont think that is out of his reach. live up to the standards of the number he chose.

Yeah Barrow is new, but so are a lot of other players. I think Barrow's smarts, work ethic, and experience at MLB demand him respect and he will bring leadership to our other LB's.

LaVar and Barrow on defense
Jansen (by far) and Coles on the O

I like to think of them as ambassadors. Guys that promote the Skins in a positive manner. I think we have quite a few:

Offense: Ramsey, Brunell, Coles, Portis, Jansen, Samuels, Raymer
Defense: Arrington, Smoot, Springs, Barrow, Taylor
Special Teams: Thrash, Tupa, John Hall, Morton
Potential others: Cooley, Koz, Mark Wilson, Boschetti (I just like his name!)
Not sure yet: Daniels, Griffin, Washington, Randy Thomas

on defense i'd say smoot. he can lead by example as he showed us last year and can generally back up his talk. offense is harder for me b/c i can't picture one guy. i'd probably say jansen though.

Hey Twisty, nice sig. Almost a mirror copy of mine...hmmm...
anyway, I'm gonna go with Coles on offense and Smoot on defense.

guys like lavar and jansen are more of the leaders by example type. they wont get you hyped up by yelling and screaming, but their play speaks for itself. i see brunell and barrow bringing that veteran leadership to their respective sides.

I say there will be some emering leaders on the team..I just hope that Lavar's ego can handle it...

i'd love nothing more than to see barrow grabbing lavar by the shoulders on the sidelines, explaining to him how he was out of position, or over-ran a play (like armstead tried with trotter) or smoot doing the same thing with taylor, running his mouth, getting taylor all hyped up to go out and drill somebody.

Exactly what i was thinking. Barrow could make LaVar and Marcus Washington much much better mentally, along with guidance from Coaches Gibbs and Williams. We got some outstanding coaching now. Armstead was a class act all the way, hate to see him go.

Smoot on D
Jansen on O
Jansen has shown this off season that he can be a leader and Smoot showed up at the end of the season while he had a broken sternum that he is a warrior.

i'd pick brunell and barrow.

thats exactly who i thought. no leadership like veteran leadership. backup choices are jon jansen and then shawn springs.
