The Redskins' jersey number situation has been resolved: running back Clinton Portis has worked out an arrangement with safety Ifeanyi Ohalete and will wear jersey No. 26. Ohalete will wear jersey No. 30.
Portis debuted his new Redskins jersey at mini-camp practice on Friday.

"I feel like Superman now--I have my cape back," Portis said.

It probably ended in "Alright I'll give you the number just stop calling my house every damn day!"

I don't think Iffy should have given up the number. Portis is a profesional and is a Redskin just like every other player on the roster, and that's the only thing that should matter to him about his jersey.

I don't like it either. Now, I don't think I could avoid taking a fat wad of cash for it, but Iffy should only give it up if he wants to. If that's the case, then fine. If he felt pressure to do it, then shame on him for bowing to it.

While this jersey numbers thing appears to be childish, it's hard for me to criticize Portis or Iffy because I am a little superstitious myself. I am happy that Sean Taylor didn't get caught up in this, since he also wore No. 26 in college. I just hope that Iffy didn't have his arm twisted to the breaking point and that a seed of discord has not been planted. We need everybody pulling together.

If I am a owner/coach and something as petty as a number will make my star offensive player happy or more confident or whatever it does for him, then why the heck not lol Just give me 1200 yards. I like Iffy, and I'd understand if he were gonna start or if he weren't being compensated but hey, lets be honest, hes a backup thats more than likely getting a truckload of money for this number. I wish I were so lucky.

Iffy started last season and whether he is a backup this season hasn't been determined. Ss far as I'm concerned it's his number.

...last season...he is not expected to start this season by anyone except fans on message boards..most reporters expect bowen to move back to his natural position of ss. i guess we will see soon enough. I expected every1 on here to not like the iffy comment that he wont be starting this year haha. I like him but i like the idea of havin the headhunters backing up our corners.

What about 46?!?! You don't think Betts is one of our stars?!?! :lol1:

You might end up putting 66 down there by the end of the season, with Derrick Dockery if he steps it up under Bugel, and if your right we should move Ramsey form 11 to 6 and see if it rubs off on him! (not that he needs much help)

EDIT: Wow, 2 of you beat me while I was typing, better type faster next time!

i was surprised to see clinton with #26 on while watching a report on minicamp. i guess iffy wanted to see portis sweat. dont know if he was joking or not but he said he had to by iffy a car, let him use his house a few times for a party and by him a 12 pack every week. i think iffy will look good in 30 and now superman has his cape back. all is well.

I think Gibbs saw it this way

Clinton Portis = Huge Impact
Iffy= Special Teams Tackles

I think someone showed this chart to Iffy and he saw the light. Don't get me wrong I like Iffy and think he helps this team but Portis is top 2 important players on the team.

of course but i still think its much better for chemisty if he just respects that he is not a star for the skins, and take one for the team. On the other hand, portis should have respected that ohalete didnt want to give it up. Either way, its best for chemisty that its over.

Somehow I feel an intervention took place by Gibbs. Just a gut feeling
If anyone intervened, I'm wondering if it was Snyder. My reason being that he surely knows that Portis jersey sales will be through the roof, and the longer he waited to choose a number, the more money lost.

At least that's my theory.....

possibly.. or Judge Smoot.

Players on offense and defense helped broker the agreement. "I was one of the mediators," cornerback Fred Smoot said. "I just wanted peace and tranquility in the locker room."

Coach Joe Gibbs said he was not involved in the process.

"It's got to be worked out among the guys," Gibbs said. "As a coach you can't jump in there and start handing out numbers. I'm not going to do that."

Did Iffy ever have #30 anywhere? He seemed to jump on that number

Wow I wonder what the compensation was??

According to Portis, it was/is:

1. Buy him a new car.
2. Allow the use of his (Portis') home for a few house parties.
3. A case of beer for each home game.

I remember when a case of beer was all it took to get a number from someone else. Now you have to come up with the bling bling too.

He has been a Redskin his entire career, always in #26. At USC he wore number 31, so maybe #30 isn't a done deal for him.

A number means absolutely nothing until the man wearing it performs for our Beloved Team. . .
# 44, # 81, # 28 ( and a few more - you get the idea). . . It's the man, not the number. It's done, so lets move on !

Clinton Portis walked onto the practice fields at Redskin Park yesterday with a familiar number on his jersey, a wide smile on his face and a considerably lighter wallet in his locker.

After three months of heavy negotiations, Portis finally convinced Washington Redskins safety Ifeanyi Ohalete to give up his No. 26 uniform. It cost the star tailback a pretty penny, though, to recoup the number he used to wear with the Denver Broncos.

Neither Portis nor Ohalete would reveal specifics of the transaction. Ohalete, who will wear the recently released Trung Canidate's No. 30, wouldn't talk about the switch at all.

The final dollar figure was a hot topic around the locker room yesterday, with one club source putting the amount at a cool $45,000.

The way Portis joked about it, there might have been more involved than a simple exchange of cash.

"I bought him a car, I'm letting him use my house, have a couple house parties, I think I have to buy him a 12-pack for every home game," Portis said. "There were some negotiations involved."

45,000? I'd take that for my number any day.

during another interview Lavar was standing next to Portis when he was talking about the deal and Portis turned towards Lavar and said "i gave him Serena's number" and Lavar laughed and took off. those 2 made a scary but good looking couple.. DMac used to date Vivica A. Fox.

Good for Portis. I want my stud running back wearing EXACTLY the number he wants.

There should be ZERO sympathy for Iffy. He negotiated the deal, and he got extreme compensation. So why are there so many long faces for him?
