Paul Woody reports for the Sporting News that the Washington Redskins QB Mark Brunell, who will be 34 in September, likely will beat out QB Patrick Ramsey for the starting job in training camp. Brunell still has zip in his arm and should be rejuvenated after not playing much in 2003. Brunell no longer has outstanding mobility, but he has the footwork to get out of a jam. Ramsey has a superior arm, an excellent work ethic and the respect of his teammates for his toughness. He must, however, make better decisions and get rid of the ball quicker. QB Tim Hasselbeck is smart and has some mobility. But he lacks arm strength and tries to make up for that by reading defenses and knowing where to throw as soon as he drops back. QB Gibran Hamdan has a live arm but lacks experience.

Wow, Paul Woody. Now that's what I call truly insightful journalism. It must've taken months of hard investigative work to come to that conclusion.

<sniff, sniff>

Anyone else smell that?

Oh yes... I do believe I smell PULITZER.

I guess it was Patrick's fault that he performed in a poor offensive scheme in which better decision making was not an option. It took him getting injured that the system was then simplified. ...... That's OK, the kid is our future and he'll beat out Burnell during preseason - He still WON'T start (unless there is an injury) but his time will come with Gibbs&Co.

i live in Richmond, i've been [not] reading Paul Woody for years. he's a huge baseball and racing fan. when it comes to the redskins, he'll jump on the bandwagon, maybe throw us an article or 2 once in while, like this one, reporting the obvious. i've been reading the wash. post and times for years because of him.

Patrick didn't even get a chance to compete IMO

I still think that Ramsey has enough up his sleave to downsize Brunell to back up. Let's see what ur made of in preseason, bro.

he hasnt had much chance yet, because he started the first minicamp on crutches. he'll get a chance in camp. gibbs has had high priced backups before. there was a time when sonny jergenson backed up billy kilmer (with theisman returning punts). doug williams backed up jay schraeder...it could happen. the choice wont be made on dollars.

Here's an idea for your next column Paul. "Redskins contemplating releasing Ware."

I think that Ramsey will easily beat out Brunell. When he was good at Jacksonville look at his team. Outstanding tackles Boselli and Sears, Smith and Mcardell, and Taylor (healthy). He was never that great. When the team fell apart he fell apart. He was still good and is good now. I just think Ramsey is better.

I have a brilliant idea. Let's all see what kind of zingers we can take at that dope Paul Woody. I already dished out my Pulitzer one, and Joe got a good one in there. I really enjoyed the "releasing Ware" post.

C'mon everyone!!! Join in on the mockery!!!

Actually, I think that FFMastermind deserves some flack for feeling the need to report this as earthshattering news.

This just in! The Redskins are going into the season with new coach Joe Gibbs, hoping to win a few more games then last year. This might be possible considering the players they have added. There is a possible trade in the works for Ogun, and many believe Samuels is being dealt, though many belive he is not. They play Tampa in the first game, and it should be a good game. If they play to thier potential, they will be a great team, if not, then they won't. Dont forget, you DIDN'T hear it here first!
-Paul C.

wow, look how easy that is! I should take this guy's job!

Alright captain obvious, maybe next time you can do some real reporting!

Bruenell is one of the most accurate passers in NFL history. He still has above average arm strength. He also posseses better decision making skills and more mobility than Ramsey. Ramsey is the future ...and that aint far off. Right now I envision Bruenell looking a lot like Thiesman running Joe's offense. No one ever confused Joe Thiesman with say Joe Montana, but he led his Redskin team to back to back SB's. Joe brought in Bruenell for a reason and we all know that Ramsey has more talent than Thiesmans replacement. What was his name.... Schrader? I like Ramsey, he's the only Jersey that my son or I own. However I believe Bruenell gives us the best chance to win now. He will probably resurrect his career here much like Gannon did in Oakland.... atleast for a year or two :) .

The problem in this day and age is that they will have to make a decision with Ramsey and Brunell sooner as opposed to later. I think Ramsey signed a 5 year deal as a rookie and we all know Brunell's deal is for 8 years, but that was designed to spread out the impact of his salary cap hit and his bonus. The facts are that Brunell will be the starter for 2 years at most, before his salary cap numbers start to become unfriendly for a then 36 year old QB. The Redskins can't let Ramsey sit on the bench for 3 years and let his deal run out, he will leave town. They need to know before that if he is the real deal or not.

I don't think the competition is over just yet for the starting QB job. I think the media is spinning it that way, but I think Gibbs will pick the best guy for the job. I like the idea of Ramsey learning, but he has a year under his belt now ... he's a winner!

Well, in his defense, it is pretty slow during July, the worst month of the NFL calendar. He has to submit something to get paid.
