the US has great goaltending(Howard, the third stringer starts for Manchester United), Good defenders, Very Good Midfielders. They need more consistant forward play(maybe this is how Adu will help in 06)

As much as I'm happy we're that high, I don't see how Mexico can be ahead of us.

howard is a beast and will be one of the best goalies in the world eventually and donovan has been lighting it up by himself, but i would like to see us move demarcus beasley up to forward to create a great pair between the two as clint mathis has done nothing to help the team, but our defense is the best its ever been as our backups such as corey gibbs would probably start for many other high quality teams such as france who are lacking good defenders

mexico has always had a quality team and about 7 out of 10 times they beat us when we play them, but it has started to turn around recently and we will probably pass them soon, heck we were ranked 9 just a week ago

i agree...i used to think donovan would be our equivalent to micheal owen or rooney, but i've watched him play in the middle with beasley and reyna a couple times now and he's been DEVASTATING...we really do lack an all-world finisher and one dominant defender and we're a contender for the cup again. i have several European friends who have said they hate their position now because they know that within the next decade we'll be just as good in soccer as the rest of the world. We won't dominate like we have in basketball (until recently) but we won't have something that the rest of the world can laugh at us for like our national team has been for the last half century.

are you forgetting eddie pope??? hes been rated as the number 2 defender in the world as recently as 3 weeks ago

right, but he's more of a sweeper...not a lock down wing back...pope is amazing, but you can't have a go with just one dominant guy

okay, then how about claudio reyna or corey gibbs, either of them can completely shut down an oponent when the game is on the line, i watched gibbs do it against the all world player from grenada, forget his name, but either of them can take over an oponent and remove them from the game

i agree that reyna can, but if you have to use reyna to lockdown an opponent you're taking away his ability to create the offense from the midfield...i have actually never seen Gibbs play so I can't comment on his ability, but with a name like that, I have to assume he's amazing ;) If he really is an all-world defender then I'd say we may have one of the more dominant defenses in the world.

It's nice to see Greece get rewarded for the Europe 2004 win.
Oh wait... never mind.

Other way around. We have owned them in the last ten years. The last 8 games alone we are 6-1-1.

are we really?? i knew that we had played them well, but didn't realize it was like that. If i remember correctly the 1 loss was the "osama" game...that's one that'll stick in my mind for a while.

That was for olympic qualifying, so that was the U-23 team not the full strength team.
When was Eddie Pope rated the 2nd best defender? If he really was then MLS would have sold him for 15-20 million a while ago. US should be ahead of Mexico, but behind England, Argentina, and Italy.
US is really around 10-12th best team in the world.

eddie pope was rated the 2nd best defender like 2 weeks ago according to eurosport's player ratings and the mls hasnt sold him because they are trying to develop the league and bring in players from europe, not the other way around

Other way around. They're selling a lot of their top players.
Brian Mcbride and Carlos Bocanegra both went to Fulham within a week of each other. Tim Howard, MLS' best keeper by far: sold. MLS doesn't bring in Europeans very often, and the majority of them are over the hill. Most players in MLS that arent from the US are from either from the carribean or central america.

they only get sold if they are offered a ridiculous amount of money though, pope is getting older so nobody has offered that kind of money

Anyway, I can't beleive that the 2nd best defender in the world is in MLS. He is an excellent player, but there have to be some defenders who are better than him. Well its good for the US because the seedings for the groups in the World Cup are affected by the world rankings, so if they stay in the top 8 or so all the way through qualifying then they will be put in a group as the top team, and every other team in their group would be of a lesser ranking.
