Michael Phelps is expected to one of the big names at this summer's Olympic Games. He has a shot at eclipsing Mark Spitz's 7 Gold medals. In his first event at the US Trials he broke his own world record.

If he is going for Spitz's record for Gold medals then it would make sense to concentrate on the events he has a better chance of getting gold enough. And it seems he chance is pretty remote in that event.

Don't we love this kid?
He's a Marylander too!
I love that he wears his Orioles hat in all of his TV interviews!
You know I'm rooting for him. He is humble and gracious! I'm proud that he will represent the US in Athens.

Do you really think his chances were remote?
I was thinking that he did 3 events in an hour's time during the trials...I thought maybe fatigue played a part in him coming in second, which is nothing to be ashamed of, besides Aaron Peirsol is from the US, so either way the US might take home a Gold in this event!

He's not that great. I've seen dolphins who swim much faster than him.

I think his chance to beat Aaron in the 200 Back is remote. I think his chance to beat Crocker in the 100 Fly is much better, especially without the 200 Back on his calendar. So it is a combination of the tight schedule and select the events he has the best chance in.

And Janet Evans probably said it best:

Personally I'll forgive him the whole Orioles fan business, because he too has a June 30 birthday.

In Seoul, Biondi learned how difficult it is to beat out swimmers who specialize in one or two events. While Biondi was busy spreading himself thin, Anthony Nesty was focusing on the 100 butterfly. He beat Biondi by one hundredth of a second.

Yeah, this is my concern for Phelps, too many events...too much pressure!
