Methinks my overclocked Radeon8500 may not cut it anymore. But I will check first :p.

definitely not... you need atleast a 9000 series like a 9600 pro, but if you're gonna buy a card specifically to play Doom then you should buy one from Nvidia because Id spent a year optimizing it for their cards... i wish companies would just stick to the standards so i wouldnt have to wait for so long

I don't buy hardware to play a certain game, I will upgrade because I feel my hardware is inadequate to play a game. I will definately choose best value overall and take into account performance in all games.
I will probably end up picking up a used 9700 or 9800Pro. Money isn't good for a college student who works for his dads company for free :(.

isnt that like the same thing? If you need new hardware to play a game doesnt that mean that your old stuff is inadequate?
and anything with the core of a 9700 should be able to run the game fine (9700, 9700pro, 9800pro,XT and all that other new named crap that they made to pump more money out of their cards).

Similar, but not the same thing. I would upgrade my graphics card to play Doom III (and HL2 of course, whenever that comes out), but I would not get a certain brand or model because it is better in Doom III.
I do realize that anything based on the R300 core would run the game pretty well, I will probably end up sniffing the overclockers.com classifieds and see if there are any good deals to be had.
Minimum requirements is a Geforce4 MX/Radeon 8500. Truth is though that a Radeon8500 is far superior to the Geforce2 based Geforce 4 MX. I will probably get the game and see if I can run it at medium settings at 800x600 or higher. If not, then I will upgrade.
The only big problem I see is if I can't take my desktop to school with me, then I will be stuck with the 9200 mobility in my laptop, and that will suck majorly.

all you gotta do is flash your card and you'll be straight. Next card im gonna buy though is the 6800, it totally leaves everything else in the dust. The weird thing is that the core for the new ATI card is the same as the 9700 core except it's majorly overclocked and has new ram chips. Oh well, I'll still hopefully be able to play Doom 3 on medium settings and experience the sexy zombie/demon killing action :)

I got the game and it's really, really cool. I just started it and it's scary as hell, the flashlight you have to use doesn't really light up the room like most games do. Stuff just jumps out at you. Play it in the dark with nothing else on, and you'll have a great time.
