(U-WIRE) COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland men's basketball forward Nik Caner-Medley was arrested last weekend after a confrontation in Maine, according to police reports.

The Portland, Maine, native was charged with disorderly conduct after an incident in the city's Old Port District.
Caner-Medley, 20, was approached by a group Friday night, according to the police report. Police arrived on the scene after motorists told them there was a fight nearby.
"Caner-Medley was there, yelling," said Lt. Vern Malloch to The Associated Press. "[Caner-Medley's] friends were trying to restrain him. He was intoxicated and made a statement: 'I'm from Maryland, and nobody can beat me.'"

Caner-Medley was taken to the Cumberland County Jail. He was released an hour later on $1,000 unsecured bail.

"Several other people stopped and said [Caner-Medley] was out of control, but none of those people wanted to give statements," Malloch said.
Although police reports state Caner-Medley was noticeably intoxicated, he will not face underage drinking charges because he could not be placed at a bar and did not admit to drinking.
Caner-Medley, Maine's Mr. Basketball in 2002, averaged 12.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game last season. The Terps are scheduled to leave for a 12-day tour of Italy in mid-August and Caner-Medley's status for the trip is still undecided, Assistant Media Relations Director Mark Fratto said.
Fratto said coach Gary Williams contacted Caner-Medley and his mother, Janet Caner.
Williams is on a recruiting trip in California, but did issue a statement.
"I am getting all of the information and I will make a statement at the appropriate time," Williams said.

Calls to Caner-Medley's house were not returned.

"'I'm from Maryland, and nobody can beat me.'"

I almost spit out some water I was drinking yesterday when I heard on the radio that he said that.

At least it's for something goofy and not a serious illegal act. Pretty funny if you ask me.

If he showed 1/10th of that fire on the court and actually took the ball to the hoop every once in awhile we might be onto something.
