If we have to release or trade either Fred Smoot or Chris Samuels next year because of cap considerations or trading for Ogun etc.
Which one is to important to lose?

Its going to be hard enough for smoot and springs to handle the CB's, I think they will be a great duo once we get rolling though. But if we take a step down from smoot then its going to be ugly at the CB position.
I like the idea of dealing Gardner to get Ogun, but if we get Ogun its not going to help our salary cap any...
I don't think they would have signed Brunell to such a fat contract if we couldn't fit it all under our cap, no worries.

How's about keeping them both becuase they are Pro Bowl caliber, and not filling our holes by making new ones. After the season Snyder will pony up plenty to pick up a player that will satisfy.

Smoot. I think Samuels will be more replaceable, especially with Buges tutoring the backups. Smoot's young, tough, and plays with heart. He's also the Mouth of the Skins, a very important position to have.

either one frankly, Samuels can be replaced by Dockery moving out to Tackle or Whiney. Smoot....I love Smoot, I got my pic taken with him at the Draft party and my visor autographed, but he can be replaced by Marlin Jackson, Antrelle Rolle or Antonio Perkins in the draft.

it's harder to replace a pro bowl bookend Left Tackle then it is a solid #2 CB. although Samuels have struggled the last few years under the "QB-is-Done" system. Smoot is getting better but he's not physical/strong enough for the bigger receivers and gives way too much cushion because of it. plus we have W. Harris who can be a real sleeper of a FA signed this year when he gets healthy.. G. Williams already have been saying he's going to surprise a lot of ppl and they have big plans for him when he returns soon. i like Harris replacing Smoot better than Winey or the rookies replacing Samuels next year.

There isn't a player in the game that a smart GM would trade for a Pro Bowl/franchise LT. Lets give Chris a year under a real scheme before we are ready to make a bone-head deal of the century.

I agree that Chris deserves a year under this offense before judgement is passed, but as of now I'd value one of the toughest players on the team who's on the rise as opposed to a troubled big name who's regressing.

I wouldn't trade either one of them for Ogen, Ogen can bite me. I'm done worrying about the D line lets go in w/ what we have and see if this buffalo guy can make it happen. If we can be better than 15 defenses in the NFL we'll go a long ways. Some of us like to dream about having a complete team well every team has holes and Ogen may be an expensive reach, I'm passing. Besides whats his face likes to leave CBs on an island, why give up your workhorse CB?
How are you going to give up something on offense for something defense?! Sorry nope, I want to see Gibbs coach a staffed offense. Gibbs already gave whats his face Sean Taylor so he better be content, whats his face had all offseason to upgrade his defensive line, he didnt. That's it over and done w/ we have to wait till next year. You can't have Sean Taylor and eat your cake too.

There will be no reason to give up either one ....... This is a big year for both these players, so lets focus in on what they do now and let next year take care of itself and leave this topic for then.

corners and left tackles are at a premium now. they'll both be tough to re-sign next year. i think samuels would be easier to replace from our roster right now with winey or kenyatta jones, because the corners harris and brown are still hurt, but we have to see them both play out this year. i think with all the corners and tackles the coaching staff signed, they are ready to proceed no matter what. they are prepared to make tough decisions if they are forced to this time around. they signed all those tackles and corners for a good reason, and i dont believe in coincidence in these matters. as for ogunleye, i said before, Miami should be the desparate ones now, not us. they have lost their starting tackle to injury, at least temporarily, their starting running back to retirement, and face the probability of losing their starting DE to sitting out in a contract dispute which they seem unwilling to do anything about, but i think if the deal was going to go down it would have happened already.

I voted Smoot for several reasons: (1) we just lost Champ and need a stud CB, (2) we have Buges to tutor a replacement for Sameuls, and (3) Chris makes over 10% of the cap this year!

i like smoot better too. i dont care much for the way samuels has the team over a barrel with his cap hit.

I'd like to keep them both. but if I had to let 1 go, it would prolly be Chris. It would not be easy.

I agree with Patrick and NamVet, wait until the year's over and I bet NOone will want to see either of these guys gone. They're both gonna have standout seasons.

I'd say Smoot, but I want them both back.
Two things
-Smoot is here to be our #1 CB, not the (solid) #2 as some of you are saying
-Don't bash Samuels because of his cap hit, he didn't write the contract, he just signed it!

I misread the poll. I think we can afford to lose Samuels more than Smoot, especially the way Joe runs a two TE offense from time to time. He very rarely leaves a tackle on an island, which means you can get by with an average tackle because he usually has help. Whereas in GW defense, the corners are going to face extreme pressure due to heavy blitzing, so you need someone who can handle himself.

i want them both to prove themselves durable, like jansen or bailey, who havent missed a game in 5 years. smoot is smallish to be supporting the run or dishing out hits against bigger receivers and running backs. samuels had knee problems last year plus offseason shoulder surgery. i hope they both hold up this year.

How good Smoots can get is unknown. I have already seen how good Samuels can be, and have every reason to believe that he is a future Hall of Famer. When he is inducted, I hope it's as a Redskin.

Smoot. He's on the upswing, and there aren't many top quality corners. If he increases his skill, he could be tops in the league.

Lets wait until the season is over. The coaches can make this evaluation better than we can.
I like Smoot more, but how much that help on the field will be decided this year.
I think it will come down to dollars and cents, the guy who stays maybe the guy who could have gotten a little more to play somewhere else.
The guy who takes more could hurt himself, because a rebuilding team could hurt his career. While staying in the Gibbs program he could be happy and winning Super Bowls.

i look at it this way. we cant lose. we have 3 guys at key positions all in a contract year...smoot, samuels and gardner. if they play great and re-sign with the team...great! if not, we have added several corners, tackles and receivers to the roster...brilliant!!!

I don't think many have given him credit for playing well lately. Certainly not me, and I've been one of his biggest supporters. but I think a lot of people believe the circumstances had more to do with his poor play than his ability did. If the contract was the only argument then I would say you have a strong argument. But to get rid of him because he hasn't lived up to expectations the past 2 years is foolish. Especially when Bugel is lauding his abilities.
