View Full Version : Example of what pre-season means to coach Gibbs...

I'm surprised this wasn't talked about more. Then again, I could have missed it since I'm not around much on Sundays and Mondays...

Anyone notice in the Panthers game at the end there was 1:20 seconds left when the Panthers were driving into FG range? And coach Gibbs didn't burn a TO to stop the clock incase they did score? The Panthers melted the clock down nearly to no time left. If Gibbs would have used the TOs that we had, we could have had enough time to get into FG position ourselves.

Why would he do that? I believe it was done intentionally. Way to much experience on the sideline for that to happen unintentionally.

My thinking was he wanted to see how the backups would handle the 2 minute offense. Coach Gibbs didn't really care if we won or not. He had already seen what he wanted. How the OL played....how the QBs played....how the RBs played....so now he was wanting to see our backup defensive guys adjusted.

And I can't say they didn't pass the test. Kasay and the Panthers had to settle for a 52 yard field goal. Which in the end he made, as we all know.

I just wanted to get other feelings on this matter.

Once again. I apologize if this was covered.

since it was preseason i think Gibbs just wanted to see how his Defense would react in that situation. by calling TO's he would be sending a message to the D that they couldn't stop them or cause a turnover, sack for a big loss, etc. i'm sure if it was the regular season he would call TO's to get the ball back.. but they weren't that far in field goal position anyway so calling TO's might've been better off for Carolina w/ what plays to call.

Nope, you are exactly right. I combined the two plays together by mistake.

I had forgotten that it went into OT.

My bad....

I understand what you are saying CarMike. Joe is manipulating the preseason games to see how players are responding in certain circumstances. Obviously he would have used timeouts differently if it were a regular season game, but he wanted to see how his players performed if they didn't have any TO and needed a stop.

Oh ok It makes sense now. I know Joe wouldnt do that in a real game, and he sees preseason as a harder training camp

the coaches are sometimes using the preseason games to practice certain situations. like when they tried to block that punt in the first game. that was awesome. i'd like to see more of that. just go for it and make the punter nervous...you never know what might happen. you can also settle for a fair catch anyway.

I agree. You can only assimulate game situations so much in practice. It's nice to have a real game opportunity to try some things and not have to pay for it in the loss column.
