i think he's going to start in place of barrow, or at least see a lot of playing time this year, and hopefully there will be no drop off. no reason to rush barrow back until he's 100%. here's some pretty high praise from the defensive coaches. another guy i'm looking forward to watching friday night against atlanta.

"We can't ask the guy to do much more," said linebackers coach Dale Lindsey. "He's done everything we've asked him to do. He's a great competitor, very intense. We count him as a starter. We think we have four starters at linebacker."

Williams considers Pierce his fourth-best linebacker, largely because of athleticism. But Williams also likes Pierce because of his cerebral approach to the game and study habits.

"From a coordinator's perspective, I like that fact that's he's an intelligent coach on the field," Williams said. "I'm beginning to trust him like a coach on the field."

from what i've read, i wouldnt be surprised to see all four "starting" linebackers on the field together later after barrow returns. with those 4 guys plus taylor and bowen...that would be an interesting package of headhunters.

Outside Sean Taylor, he has been my star of the pre-season. i hope he fulfils the potential he shows from next week.

we lucked out holdinjg on to him...it might also seem like we jumped the gun spending that kind of money on Barrow. I hope he proves us wrong and tears it up.

Seeing all 4 of them on the field would be something ... I hope Barrow gets back soon, but glad to hear we have some insurance with Pierce.

we just have to make sure bowen hits one of the OTHER guys...

Peirce is good but as for right now he's no barrow, and maybe someday he will be but I'm still hoping barrow returns as fast as possible.

Pierce just needs opportunity.

I've been a big Pierce fan and I'm very glad we kept him but I am really hoping we can see Barrow soon. That guy is a tackling machine.

yea i cant wait to see barrow. i think reading between the lines and looking at the bigger picture, Williams probably wanted barrow as his "intelligent coach" on the field. now he is turning to pierce for that role. that speaks volumes about pierce.

I am happy that we have some solid young talent waiting in the wings to take over for Barrow. If Pierce is the back up this year and then takes over starting in 05 or 06 we have it made.

I wonder how the coachs feel about Clif Smith.

I agree 100%. Can't believe how many times I heard his name called on plays. Excited to see how he continues to develop. Gibbs, Williams & Company loves those smart players.

i seem to remember marty schottenheimer saying something along the same lines, about how smart pierce was. we can thank marty at least for hanging onto pierce and mccants.

everyone have praised his smarts.. u quoted Williams saying.. "From a coordinator's perspective, I like that fact that's he's an intelligent coach on the field," Williams said. "I'm beginning to trust him like a coach on the field.".. his rise have taken the strain away of potentially losing Barrow.. i don't think he'll be as good as far as number of tackles are concerned and the experience to not get fooled by anything.. but i'm confident w/ him in there and i think his speed makes him a better blitzer.

i'd prefere barrow to play, more experienced(not to mention its his natural position), but cause of his intelligence, tackling ability, and leadership. but im not worried with antonio pierce there. heck, if derek smith played for us at the mlb spot, so can pierce...

D. Smith is a good player.. 3 years straight w/ 100+ tackles for the 9ers.. i liked him when he was here.. Smith, Barber and Arrington were young and going to be a star group.. owell.

this is why i was so glad that we resigned him. he is going to be a key contributor to the team imo. plus, he is young.

I hope he continues to do an excellent job, but I'd love for Barrow to get healthy. Even if Barrow is the starter, Pierce will see a lot of playing time.

Hate to break your Pierce lovefest, but if Barrow is even close to 80% I guarantee he starts during the regular season. The man is just a machine. If he even comes close to what he was last year he will be a big improvement over Trotter. The thing that I like about both Barrow and Pierce is that they both ACTUALLY cover the guy their supposed to unlike Trotter.
