looks like Barrow can't go for the Bucs' game.. and if Rock can't play Friday, he's going to have a tougher time making this team..

The Washington Redskins will be without several starters for their preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons Friday night, and it looks increasingly likely that linebacker Mike Barrow will be out for the first regular season game as well.

Barrow has not practiced in three weeks because of a knee injury and has yet to play in a preseason game. He did not put on pads or a helmet during yesterday's workout and said that he would not be able to play Friday even if it was a regular season game. The rest of the defense is relatively intact, however, with linebacker LaVar Arrington again practicing yesterday and likely to play at least a few snaps Friday. Arrington has maintained throughout the last few weeks that he could play if these were regular season games and he has been missing games and practices to ensure his knee injury is not exacerbated.

The offensive line will be reshaped on Friday as injuries mount. Starting right tackle Jon Jansen was lost for the season in the preseason opener on Aug. 9, and starting left tackle Chris Samuels remains out with an ankle injury. Samuels has not practiced since spraining his right ankle last Friday in St. Louis and he will not play against the Falcons Friday at FedEx Field. Samuels is no longer in a walking cast but is still wearing a splint and is unsure exactly when he can return to the field.

"We're just resting it right now," Samuels said.

Starting right guard Randy Thomas, who sprained his neck lifting weights over the weekend, said he is feeling better but he too missed practice again yesterday and said he will miss Friday's game as well.

"My goal now is [the opening game against] Tampa Bay," Thomas said. "That's my feel on it. We're going to be smart with it, man. Next week is the regular season and that's my goal."

Coach Joe Gibbs said that running back Rock Cartwright might also miss Friday's game because of a stinger in his neck. Cartwright did not practice yesterday but said he is not ruling out playing against Atlanta and does not believe the injury is serious.

"I just think it's a little pinched nerve in my neck," Cartwright said. "I think I'll be able to go [Friday]."

There is considerable competition at the running back spot with final cuts set for Sunday, and Friday's game will be the last opportunity for bubble players such as Cartwright to prove they belong among the 53 players who stay in Washington.

"I know that if I don't make plays then I won't be here," Cartwright said. "I'm just going to go out and try to contribute on special teams, offense, and if they need me to do something on defense, I'll be willing to do that. Anything to make this roster, I'm willing to do."

Tight end Fred Baxter remains out with a knee injury and has not practiced in weeks.

The Washington Redskins will be without several key starters for tomorrow night's preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons because of injuries.

Linebacker Mike Barrow (knee), guard Randy Thomas (neck) and tackle Chris Samuels (ankle) are expected to miss the game, though no official injury report was given by the team yesterday.

Samuels, who sprained his ankle in last week's loss at St. Louis, is expected to be ready for the Sept. 12 season opener against Tampa Bay. Thomas, who strained his neck lifting weights last week, is less certain to be ready for the Bucs, though yesterday he sounded confident he will be back.

Barrow, on the other hand, continues to be plagued by tendinitis in his left knee. He has yet to play in the preseason, has not fully practiced in almost a month and yesterday bristled when a television reporter asked him whether he was being held out for precautionary reasons.

"I'm hurt. I can't go," Barrow said. "If this was a regular-season game, I couldn't go right now. I'm hurt. So it's not precautionary. I'm not a franchise player in that regard. I'm hurt. I can't go."

im not worried yet. if ray brown makes the team, or lennie freidman, can play guard if thomas cant play and spriggs can fill in if samuels isnt ready to go. and of course rock might not play on firdya, CAUSE HE NEEDS TO GET CUT.

i'm VERY concerned. before jansen got hurt i thought our o-line was our strongest position with 3-4 guys playing at pro bwol level. now this potential musical chars could be a major problem to the offense having any sustained success.

The big problem with all this is chemistry. However, I think both Samuels and Thomas said they will be ready for 9/12.

even if they arent, i dont see it as a lingering injury problem. samuels had the sprained ankle last year, but it didnt affect him.

Rock won't make the next cut. The other injuries are worrisome, but part of the NFL. It's better for the back-ups to get some serious play time now and get up to speed for when they are needed in the regular season.

It seems like the 20 players on the bubble will be getting the extra look in Friday's game. From a fans point of view, this might be the worse game to watch (for a preseaon game). Injuries are becoming a major concern BUT I think most teams are going through the same thing.

Thomas should be ready to go against TB I think, Samuels definitely will play, even if he's hurt, he always does.

Barrow meanwhile I'm hoping to see by week eight, seriously.

Rock had better play or he might be looking for a job. Is Rock eligible for the practice squad?

if rock doesn't play he's out...I actually want to see perce play, becuase foecing barow in will just cause more problems.Thomas should be good by the 12th same goes for samuels. If pierce really steps up in the few games he'll play he might earn split time or even the starting job,IMO.

I have a feeling Rock is gone. I know it sucks to get cut based on injury, but you gotta play if you wanna be on the team. Besides, Rock was less than impressive this preseason.

My biggest concern is the health of the Dirtbags. As long as they are ready to go by Sept. 12, I'll be less concerned. But it would have been really nice to have them all play together with Mark and Portis in the final preseason game, just to establish some type of chemistry and cohesiveness.

It looks to me that we sighed another player on potential. Lets face it Mr. Barrow will be out for a while. Its nice to see that Antonio has stepped up. I am sure Barrow wanted Pierce's number but I believe we have the correct "58" in there!

If Rock doesn't play Friday, he might as well not show up Monday.

Pierce is a good linebacker, having him in there with Arrington and Washington beside him doesn't concern me at all. Barrow might not have much left in the tank anyway, the injuries might be taking their toll. I'd love to see him out there but I love the way Pierce has played, he has earned this shot and I'd be willing to bet he takes it and runs with it.

Samuels and Thomas will be ready, they have 8 days to get ready, I'm not concerned at all.
