Jeff I keep meaning to tell you, when I was growing up we had a cat that looked exactly like Bootsie, except his name was Bibbs.

Bibbs lived for with us for about 100 years...then he went to live with my best friend's family, when my family split up...and they had him for about 100 years...in fact, no one's really sure if old Bibbers ever did die....?

Well I have not been around much this weekend because Friday my daughter literally brought a dog home with her. She found this poor girl in the park without any tags:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6dc22b3127cce97161b4e786600000016102CaOWjJm0Yg

She gets along with my dog Shakespeare amazingly well for only knowing each other for 2 or 3 days. We looked for an owner and we looked for a microchip but alass we think she was abandoned. It looks as if we have ourselves a second dog now.

We think she is a cross between a Red Herring Australian Cattle dog (noticably the face and ears) and a Lab (she has a short oily coat and an otterlike tail). The Vet tech said she looked like a Shiba Enu mix and some other people have suggersted she is a German Shepard Dog mix, but I don't see any of that.

Don't know what color the tongue is, she is not as licky as my lab is.

No bad habits, is not completelky housetrained yet but we are working on that. She is an escape artist though and has found a weakness in her crate that I have had to fix.

Her name is Karma. We feel this is a debt we are paying into the respectable pet owner pool and we hope that noen of our dogs go missing but we are doing what we would want someone to do for our dog.

How big is Ajax?Too big. He weighs 90 lbs and the vet says his ideal weight is 85 lbs, so we've got him on a bit of a diet. He doesn't like it very much either. Milkbone consumption has dropped dramatically. I'm afraid Ajax is good at using that face to acquire tasty snacks and my family has been too weak to resist. Everyone's made a concerted effort to help/force him to lose weight and he's dropped about five pounds in five months, so we're hopeful for the future.

I don't think that is the main factor in why they have a shorter life expectancy than some other breeds. The short snout and deep chest can cause complications in some boxers, and may cause problems with all boxers in certain situations such as extreme heat and bloat, but I have never heard that as a reason for a shorter life expectancy. They tend to be prone to various cancers and hip problems, I think this is more the cause. Also I think large dogs normally have short life expectancy than smaller, not positive though.

I never heard that. Most of their problems are a result of inbreeding. You may want to try and find a Boxer mix, it won't be as pretty but likely would be healthier. Get a health insurance plan for it, I wish I had for mine, I have already spent a couple grand in vet bills for my dog.

My beagle was the cutest thing ever, man. I rescued her as an almost fully grown puppy and had her for her whole life. She was absolutely adorable up until the day I had to take her in. That's part of what made it so hard. She was dumb as a wet post though. Don't know where that came from since all of the other beagles/beagle-mixes my family and extended family ever had were smart. Maybe it had something to do with her having a 13th nipple, lol.

for some reason, the pic is not coming up with the post.. i will see if i can find it another way..

there are a couple of ads a month for boxer pups so i know there are a couple of breeders up here. nothing like malamutes and huskies which are every where. at least we do not have the huge numbers of rottweilers and pit bulls that were around new orleans
german shepherds seem to be very popular as well as huge numbers of chihauhuas.
the good thing is that boxers do not seem to be being overbred which is real healthy for the breed

my wife wants a boxer for our next dog, but they don't live that long from what I understand because of their short snout...is that correct?`

you are correct that they have a relatively short life span.. about 10 years on average. it has nothing to do with the short snout, just a genetic trait of theirs.. they tend to get early heart failure.. i guess it all comes down to the genetic traits of the breed and it is not helped by in breeding.. mutts do tend to be healthier because of that

Maybe it had something to do with her having a 13th nipple, lol.

we had a beagle once as well. they truly are dumb as abox of rocks.. ours was killed by a car.. they are one of the few breeds that if they get hit by a car and survive are at risk to get hit a second time because they are too dumb to figure out what happened.

That's why I didn't let mine out of the house. Especially as she got older and lost her hearing. She didn't listen to begin with, but at least I knew she was being obstinent when she could hear me.

mixes are always more healthy. Hopefully we will have at least a Dozen more years before we even have to worry about it. We are also thinking about a great Dane for the next one too.
If you have health concerns in looking for a new dog, I would definitely avoid a Great Dane. If you are looking for a large dog, have you thought about a Newfoundland? They are fantastic..trust me, I know..there is one lying in my room 2 feet from me right now...

I don't think we eat more goats (?!?) here than in other places, and as for the square pupils, I have no idea why, and actually I've never seen a live goat from close enough to tell.. (I honestly never would have imagined having to type that last paragraph on a Redskins fan board..)

you are right about that.. it seems that mutts pick the better traits from the breeds they come from instead of the worst.

the only qualms i have is in getting an older dog.. sometimes they seem to have "flashbacks" if they were abused when younger.. i have never known an abused cat to lash out and we have rescued well over a dozen abused or abandoned cats over the years.., where as i do know of a couple of people who had dogs react violently out of the blue and the only thing they could figure was that was what was going on..

Yeah, I bought it here. They come from either Canada or Hungary originally, but there are tons of breeders here now..there is also a very large canine rescue school that uses them that is one of the best in the world. I don't know what breeds are common in US, but dogs are very very common here, and the breeds most often seen are German Shepherd, beagle, any kind of small dog like fox terrier for example , lagrador, a wide variety of italian and non-italian hunting dogs (like the Bracco for example), Newfoundlands (or maybe it's just in my neighborhood, but there are 4 around here not including mine)..all in all we are a dog-loving country (I have already had three of them..).

i am not sure of the origin of the breed.. but it is not a cross breed with an ocelot or bob cat.. they are an extremely large cat that is spotted with a very long body.
they run up to 50 pounds (actually) and are insanely expensive.. i have seen pictures of them being walked on leashes in manhattan. it is a trait that it is peculiar to the breed. i guess if you can afford to live there , you can afford an outrageously priced animal..

we now have 3 with us here.. plus 2 are being housed at a vet we worked closely with until we can ship them up here. abandoned and abused animals are a terrible problem in new orleans post katrina. they are subject to the worst abuse by people who take out their worst hostilities on them.. really sad

I have a white boxer named Dempsey (after the great Jack Dempsey). My brother has a brindle boxer named Apollo (after Apollo Creed). They are the best dogs. Mine is about 65lbs. My brothers is coming in around like 85lbs all muscle. He got his from a breeder that had champion bloodline dogs. They are the best dogs with kids. They have so much energy though so its tough to try to bottle that up. You need alot of room for them to run. Their life span is probably more like 10-14 years which is sad because they are such great dogs. But i do agree about buying health insurance for the boxer. They do tend to have hip problems later in life and stomach issues sometimes. But the boxer is the dog ill probably always have.

Well some can. Luckily mine doesnt. White ones are prone to all kinds of health issues: stomach, hearing, vision.Mine is awsome though. No problems at all. Breeders used to put the white ones down because of the problems. But now they sell them also because they are still good pets. Just cant really breed them and make any money like you can with the other ones.

i have some sad news to report. a couple of weeks ago, many of you saw the picture i posted of our new goat, Cody. Cody passed away friday as the remnants of a hurricane/tropical storm passed over us. Come to find out, from an experienced breeder, Cody was too young to be taken away from his family/herd, as he was only about 10 or 12 weeks old, and 3 months would be the minimum time frame to separate them. also, goats, as herd animals, are not supposed to be alone, and they hate rain. they are very temperamental, and prone to fright and stress. i learned all of these things the hard way and i feel like a terrible care-taker, but i did learn some tough lessons.

i also have some good news though. this past sunday morning, i purchased 2 new goats, Gizmo and Gus. they were raised together, and they are 6 months old.

Hey StogieHog, love the pic of your dog but can you resize it. It is too big to view the whole thing and it was slow to load even for me on a high speed connection.

I have a large monitor, I guess my resolution doesn't make it look that big from here.

I cannot change it right this minute I will try to get to it in a bit.

Try taking the picture from further aeway from your dog. That should make the image smaller, lol.
