I have a question raised by my wife a minute ago.

I'm sure you guys have heard of the professional snow boarder turned college football athlete. His eligability was revoked due to being paid by his endorsers.

So my question to you guys is this. How come it was alright for Weinke and Henson to sign with a baseball team and get paid millions of dollars. But when that didn't turn out they were able to go to college for the full 4 years.

How is that possible? Or am I missing something here?

I know someone will be able to explain this to me.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure, but I'll take a crack at it. Henson was a different story then Weinke. Henson left college and went to baseball, then the NFL, so he is exempt. Weinke went to baseball first, then college, which still left his college eligibility. He didn't get paid while playing college football, so it was legal. This Colorado (I think?) wide reciever was getting paid WHILE he was still on the team, and thats illegal. I'm not sure if this answers your question or if it's even correct, but thats my take on it.

Gotcha. I didn't know that about Henson.

But my understanding is that once you're paid, you lose all of your college eligability. I'm probably wrong.

The answer IMO is the NCAA is a bunch of idiots.

That's about all that I can add.

I'm no expert by any means, but I think you just can't recieve any money while you're playing college sports.

I don't recall Ricky Williams leaving Texas while he played minor league baseball.

Then you're right, the NCAA is a bunch of idiots.

You have a point Kenny. UNC had a QB by the name of Mike Thomas. He played minor league baseball for the O's lowest farm team, the Bluefield Orioles. [West Va.]

And he was in still in college.....hmmm

dan patrick had the NCAA representative on his show after the bloom ruling, and he asked the guy - "what if jeremy bloom had been an actor during the summers and got paid $1 million to make a movie?" to which the NCAA rep said it would be OK.

his point was that the NCAA couldn't be sure that some of that money wasn't coming to bloom because he was a football player.

you guys are right - the NCAA sucks. They make a billion dollars a year marketing these kids but don't allow them to make any money of their own? you can't convince me that their tuition money offsets the money earned by the NCAA.

look up the story of the NCAA fining Utah basketball coach Rick Majerus because he bought one of his players a pizza - while breaking the news that the player had lost a family member. i played college football and i think that the NCAA is shameful.

Quite simply, the NCAA is batting 1.000 as far as stupid decisions regarding eligibility this year (Bloom and Williams).

Yup...I hadn't thought about Williams. Thats the biggest pile crap ever.

Lets get this straight. The courts say that the NFL has to let these guys enter the draft. But an 11th hour court overturns the decision so Williams has to pay?

Yeah, right. It wasn't his fault. He made the decision that was best for him and his family at the time.

I wonder how this year off will effect his draft position? This decision could cost him millions if he slips to middle of the first round...
