Ivorian foes battle on the pitch

After two years of swapping insults - and occasional bullets - Ivory Coast's former warring factions have instead battled it out on the football pitch.

A team representing the loyalist army won 5-0 against the former rebels, who hold the north of the country.

One of the 4,000 French peacekeepers in the country, refereed the match in the capital, Yamoussoukro.

i think, based on the usage of the word "pitch", that they probably mean real football...soccer

not to mention the score was 5-0, which is a much more likely score in soccer than american football.

It was a soccer score....it was a soccer game. In terms of world events, when talking about football that you and I know, it is often described as "American Football".

Any other time you see football in world news, it usually means soccer.
