Redskins | Marshall Ready for First NFL Start - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 24 Sep 2004 08:25:21 -0700

Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins LB Lemar Marshall will likely replace injured LB LaVar Arrington (knee) in the starting lineup for the Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Sept. 27. "I hope everything goes well with LaVar, first of all," Marshall said. "As far as playing this week, this is an opportunity. I thought it might happen in New York last week but it didn't. Right now, I'm just going to have to step up."

Redskins | Pierce Earns Increased Playing Time - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 23 Sep 2004 22:30:15 -0700

Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs has been very pleased with the play of LB Antonio Pierce (bruised ribs) in the absence of LB Mike Barrow (knee), who has missed time with a knee injury. "[Pierce] has been outstanding for us," Gibbs said. "Our defensive coaches think he's smart enough to play linebacker at any position. He gets our defensive guys lined up in the right places several times in those critical situations where it can get real confusing." With Barrow listed as questionable for Monday's, Sept. 27, game against the Dallas Cowboys, Pierce, who is probable, continues to work with the first-team defense. Gibbs has said that he hopes the defense can find a way to get Pierce on the field even after Barrow returns.

Redskins | No Decision on Starting Right Tackle Yet - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 23 Sep 2004 22:16:18 -0700

Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports the Washington Redskins remain undecided as to who will start at right tackle in Week 3's game against the Dallas Cowboys. Either OG Ray Brown or OT Kenyatta Jones will get the starting nod. "We'll make that decision later on," offensive line coach Joe Bugel said. "I'm going to rotate them around in there. The guy who does the best this week in practice will start. That's really the bottom line."

Sounds like a lot is still to be decided. I don't know much about Lemar's play, but it would be great if it could be Washington, Barrow, and Pierce. But I'm behind Lemar if he gets the nod.

Thanks for posting!! :)

I hope Marshall can take on blockers without getting blown back 5 yards off the ball. Lavar lines up on the line on a lot of 3rd downs.

What really scares me about Lemar is his ability to cover out of the backfield. A saavy coach like Parcells will focus on our "weak links", and certainly run plays in an attempt to expose them. I can see Cowboys FB Richie Anderson coming out of the backfield to catch a pass, and if Lemar is out of position, its a 20-30 yard gain. How many times in the past have we been killed by wide open TE's and FB's on dump passes?

I gotta admit, i have NOT been a Lemar Marshall fan. I'll be rooting my arse off for him Monday, but I'm concerned about him being in there. I think he can do okay but honestly I'd feel better about moving Pierce to weak and letting Khary play middle.

That part of the scheme will probably change. Lemar is not the same type LB as Lavar.

I feel similarly, but the team seems to be good with Pierce in the middle and if he can get Marshal in the right spots, I think we'll be fine.

I thought one of the reasons Williams moved Lavar to weakside LBer is due to the fact that they don't normally cover a RB/TE on pass plays?

If thats the case, hopefully Lemar won't have to worry about that part of the game.

What if he blows the roof off of FedEx field? has like 3 sacks and 6-9 tackles?

That could be bad news in the long run. Fan wise I mean. I can hear it now, "sit Lavar for Lemar"....lol

With LaVar out, the defense is without a versatile playmaker. Probably the defense's most potent weapon. This problem needs a solution.

That solution will be the unleashing of Sean Taylor.

A good defense tries to cover up it's weaknesses. I'll bet Williams has thought about this and will try to find some way to rectify it. Of course the best way to do that is for Lemar to come out and establish himself early in the game. I don't put it past Williams to try to get Lemar involved in some type of blitz early or to go back to game one and have his linebackers crossing on blitzes.

i think Lemar will be good. he's a safety playing linebacker. ron warner might be better than anyone thinks too. who would have thought before the season that our leading tackler would be Pierce, or that Bowen would reak havock in the backfield and get 2 sacks? who would have thought those 2 guys would emerge as team leaders, among all the other talented guy on defense? i think williams will have some tricks up his sleeve. i was just looking at the team's 40 times, and Lemar Marshall is the fastest linebacker on the team. arrington is a close second....

ARRINGTON Lavar 6- 2.2 252 4.49
58 PIERCE Antonio 6- 0.0 230 4.58

SKIN Strong Backer HGT WGT Speed
53 WASHINGTON Marcus. 6- 3.5 252 4.59
CAMPBELL Khary 6- 1.0 237 4.73
58 MARSHALL Lemar 6- 2.0 218 4.48

SKIN Middle Backer HGT WGT Speed
58 BARROW Michael 6- 1.0 236 4.64

on a side note, i also noticed that Ron Warner is by far the fastest defensive lineman on the team, including tackles and ends. here's the link for anyone who hasnt seen it before:

I think most teams are prone to mistakes like this - especially early on in the year. This is why I don't understand why Gibbs hasn't utilized Portis or Cooley a little more in this capacity.

being the eternal optimist, i'm going to point out that Lemar's strongest suit may be his coverage abilities. he might not be the natural pass rusher that lavar and marcus are, but he's our fastest linebacker and he used to play safety, so he should be better in coverage than anything else, as a converted linebacker. i'm thinking he's got the speed to spy on any tailbacks, fullbacks, or tightends releasing into pass patterns or screens and be there to blow it up.
