Just curious to see whether fans on this MB think D.C. will favor their baseball team over the 'skins. I'm pretty sure I know the prevailing opinion, but I was pretty surprised to read about so many fans being happy about baseball's return to D.C.

Baseball does not compare to football in this town, but in the 70's during the golden years of the Bullets Washington was just as much a basketball town as it was football.

Of course the curse of the bullets has made this town a solid football town

I think just liek many cities across the nation, DC can be a both town and will be. Consider me on board with the new Washington franchise. Took a long time for Peter Angelos to destroy me as a fan, but took one annopuncement to give me renewed enthusiasm for major league baseball. Dc Baseball!

No matter how poorly the Skins play...this will always be a football town. A decade or ball football and even a new NFL franchise 40 minutes north or town hasn't stopped DC metro residents from being die-hard football fans.

definitely football, but baseball will probably survive for awhile.

with the exception of the NFL, all major leagues need to contract about 4-10 teams.

this will always be a football town, even if the skins go 0-16 and the new team goes 100-62.

Without a doubt it's a football town. The tradition of the Redskins is like nothing I've seen before.

Without reading any of the other replies I'm going for both... for me anyway. I'm officially a diehard washington baseball fan. From beginning to end, I've got another team to be fanatic for. I've never even really watched baseball but I do remember going to orioles games when I was a kid and watching a live game is cool. I just put my name on the season ticket list. I'm ready. Of course that won't diminish my love for football.

I have to Disagree....

Washington Proper has NOT always been a football city.

There was a time in Redskins history when black players were not allowed on the team. If I am not mistaken ( I am sure many of you will run and check), the Redskins were the last team in the NFL or whatever it was then to integrate. Considering the racial makeup of the city back then, I would strongly disagree that the majority of DC proper's residents were diehard Redskins fans. Of course that started to change when Bobby Mitchell came to town.

Since I grew up in DC (proper) and not the suburbs, I know for a fact that when the Bullets were winning and the Redskins were losing DC was a Basketball City.

I also know for a fact that when Georgetown basketball was on top of the NCAA DC was a basketball city.

More recently...When the University of Maryland's Basketball team won the NCAA's DC was a Basketball City.

I would argue that if the Wizards ever get themselves together, you will see for yourselves what team is king in this city. I say this loving the Redskins as much as anyone on this website, but this is an urban city and the majority of it's residents prefer basketball.

I am sure Die-Hard redskins fans would disagree, but consider the racial makeup of the city past and present (DC Proper) before you say football has been king forever. It simply has not been.

But I guess if you never lived in DC proper and grew up in the suburbs your perspective will be different NOT WRONG.....just different..

No denying DC is all Redskins now

Don't need to "run and check" http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smilies/expressive/irked.gif most of us know this already, have discussed it on this site before, and all agree that our first owner was a racist

Of course, most of the DC area is made up of people who live outside of DC proper. But, even still I would have to disagree with you about Georgetown and Maryland basketball being more important than the redskins. That's just ridiculous. Of course, people were excited, but I would be willing to be that if given the choice of which team DC and Metro area fans would most like to see win a championship the redskins would CLEARLY be the favorite choice.

I didn't live in the area during Georgetown's successful era, but I did when UMD won the National Championship. IMO, this area didn't come close to being a "basketball town" after UMD's win. Maybe in College Park...but not much further outside....

Football all the way!

Atleast for me. I was born in Silver Springs but we moved south soon after. With the exception of UMD and The Washington Bullets/Wizards, I love everything about DC. Redskins, Caps, United, and even the Freedom.

And now I can finally add Washington Baseball to the list. If I lived around the area I'd definately be on the waiting list for WB season tickets.

I'm like PSF on this one. Peterless Angelos ruined baseball for me years ago. I tried to find another team to root for but I just couldn't get hooked. The Cubs....the Braves....Just couldn't get behind them 100%. But with baseball coming back to DC, forget about it! That is definately my new team forever!
