Why do Orioles fans yell "O" during the national anthem? I mean I know they are the O's, but I never understood it? Do some people find it disrespectful? I really don't care but thought it was odd?

Just curious...

I've always found it to be disrespectful...especially since it occurs in one of the most dramatic parts of the anthem.

I hear that "Oh!" everywhere. Bullets games. Redskins games. Orioles games. I hate it. It's the freaking National Anthem, for crying out loud! It's the official song for expressing love and devotion to America. Take your cap off, put your hand over your heart and either sing along properly or shut the *#@% up!

this happens in dallas too, though just at the stars games (twice since stars is mentioned twice in the song), nowhere else...i agree, it's retarded...on a side note as i step onto my soap box...when you go to a game, you know the national anthem is going to be sung. take your effing hat off and stop screwing around! i was amazed at the two games i've been to up here because both times the entire section had to be directed by a couple older gentlemen to take their hats off!! i wanted to tie the kids to a tackling dummy and sic lavar on 'em.

As a service member I am particulary pissed off when I hear someone messing up the National Anthem.

I would pay money for the following Public Service Announcement to go out prior to all sporting events:

In honor of all those who currently serve, those who have served and those who died defending our great country, we ask that you not degrade our national anthem while it is being sung. If you feel the need to practice your right of free speech we ask the veteran nearest you whip your @ss until that need has passed. Thank you and enjoy the game.

That's just my humble opinion....

To me it's like degrading the flag... you may have the right, but I also have the right to take away your ability to chew solid food...at least until the police arrive.

I don't mind it at all. I sing every word of the national anthem at all sporting events whether in New York or down in Maryland, but I still yell "O's" at every Birds game I go to. I enjoy it, and I find that since everyone around me is doing the same I am not insulting anybody.

I think it's cool.........seriously, I get a huge kick outta it...but only at the O's games, I don't like it anywhere else

Besides, the games I go to, the singer is usually prepared and pauses while we say "O"

BTW: Hit me Jim and I'm telling General Disorder :D

Tell ya one thing, I have never ever heard it during any sporting event in philly. And we all know what kind of bad fans eagles fans are. How bout we not do this during the Ravens game?

I hear it all the time at Skins games, but never do it myself - I think it's disrespectful too. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

I would not hit you Gibbsgirl...

I would ask the veteran nearest you to hit you...

See...I am all about inclusion (I am kidding folks)

Obviously you can do whatever you want to, but just be aware that there are people who are currently putting their asses on the line and they take the flag and anthems VERY SERIOUSLY. I hope none of you have the misfortune of belting out your O around the wrong company.

If Francis Scott Key Wanted the O in there, he would have put it there...

And if Francis Bellamy wanted "One Nation Under God" in the pledge he would have put it in there originally.

Um...Jim you do realize that the music is set to an old English Bar room song?

Anyway, I have the deepest respect for all things military. My stepFather is a Vietnam vet and my husband is a vet...both scream "O" as loud as anyone else...

Time to bump this discussion...

OK...so I went to the Nats/O's exhibition game on Friday night at RFK.

There were about 20% O's fans in attendence; probably less than normal since another exhibition game with the same teams was taking place the next day in Baltimore.

Anyway, a boys choir is singing the National Anthem and when it comes to the "o" part, the O's fans in attendence sang out "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"...which immediately was responded by boo's from the majority of NATS fans. The exchange really ruined the Anthem...and I'm sure the young boys in the choir (and their parents) didn't enjoy it.

I certainly don't condone boo'ing during the Anthem, but I understand the knee-jerk reaction by the Nats fans. You don't hear the "Oooo" very much in DC anymore. Only slightly at Skins games and rarely/never at Caps/Wiz games. Hearing it so loudly on Nat's turf really pissed off the DC fans, to say the least...especially with the history of Angelos vs. DC Baseball.

Message to O's fans: Save the "Ooooo" crap for your own stadium. Please don't bring it to RFK. If you want to butcher our National Anthem, please do it at Camden Yards; not in a stadium w/in the sightline of the US Capital Building.

You want a Beltway rivalry that gets ugly, keep up the "oooooo" crap.

My pissed off 2 cents...

The best thing about the Nats opener last year was being at a baseball game and not hearing the stupid "O" scream.

Wow, I was trying to figure out when and why I started this thread? You really had me confused for 5 seconds.

I hate it, but I am old fashined that way I guess. At a Skins game a couple drunk Giants fans were loudly talking through the anthem and not even stading. I finally lost it and stooped to their level by telling them to shut up (only I included an explective) and respect the anthem. the one guy wanted to beat me up, but his buddy apologized and said that his friend was actually in the armed services??? I don't get it.

I am an Oriole fan. I have always found the "O" scream during the national anthem as extremely disrespectful. I HATE it. I also don't understand how this, IMO, disrespectful chant has been acquired by fans of many other pro sports teams.

Ah, lighten up.

I still don't know why the heck we insist on playing the Anthem before sporting events in the first place, unless it's because we'd never hear it at all otherwise. I mean, it's something that we never did until the second half of last centruey, right? Something to do with the Red Scare, I believe. If that is the case, I'd just as soon ditch the practice than perpetuate a custom born from one of the most despicable policies perpetuated by the US Government.

Hey Spence, do you also get all riled up when people start cheering early, like at the "free", instead of showing the proper respect and waiting until the end?

I like on that episode of the simpsons where they are at a sportnig event and the pa announcer says "due to popular demand, we will forego the playing of the national anthem.

I feel like its just a song, just like the flag is just a flag. Material things and songs have nothing to do with the respect I have for people who have fought for our country.

Surprised that a guy like me who loves his country and the principles on which it was founded (besides slavery) does not view the National Anthem (which I also really like) as sacred?

I care more about the way Eric Clapton screwed up "Layla" the second time around than whatever interpretations to the National Anthem I've heard from Jose Feliciano, Jimi Hendrix, or Baltimore Orioles fans.

To be honest, I'd rather have the crowd sing the entire national anthem than to hear crappy renditions of it by aspiring singers.

But the "OOOOOOOOOO" still bugs me...

Its not. It is a self-serving thing O's fans like to do in the middle of our National Anthem. Unfortunately, their scream has nothing to do with Patriotism.
