He is a quiet unassuming guy who does not play with much emotion, but his smile was wider than a bus yesterday. 257 hits is an awful lot. A great record to break. Well Done.

Thats a huge record to break, and Ichiro got it. I definately saved that newspaper today, we might not see it for a long time, unless Ichiro does it again.

a little perspective on this record:
Pete Rose never got more than 235 hits in a season. And no-one has come within 15 hits in 70 years.

Akhh. Do you have any idea how many games Sisler played to have 257 hits?
I think they had shorter seasons back then.
I found the answer. He did it in 154 games, only six games difference. It is incredible a record can last 84 years.
Ichiro has 921 Hits in just 4 seasons. Had he come over to MLB earlier surely he would have given Rose a run for his money.

There's just something about his hits that leave me feeling like this record's not so great for some reason. I think it's all the slap hits he gets that bother me. If he got more hits to the outfield I think I'd be more excited.

You could add to your arguement about his hits on astroturf as well. When the previous record was set, there wasn't that surface for the ball to bounce and scream across.

I agree with this. Add in the 6 more games on the schedule, and to me it doesn't seem legit IMO.
Congrats to him anyway.

Pete Rose played on astroturf (Ichiro's home turf is grass and much less stadiums with turf these days compared to Rose's time) for 24 years in the 162 game era and was a singles hitter who didn't come close to 260 hits (230 being his highest) and neither did Tony Gwynn who was another player w/ no power (220 his highest).. and if it's so easy to slap the ball around for singles than how come no one has come close to this record? i think too many baseball fans are so enamoured w/ the Home Runs and McGwire/Sosa/Bonds to appreciate how the game is played by those w/ out great power. he also has the record for the most hits in a 4 year span. it's not right for ppl to diminish this record.

Different eras.Basically,I was playing devils advocate to the whole thing. You could make an arguement on Roger Clemens wins too.In the old days,or the National League, a pitcher had to hit.Clemens was able to throw at folks and not have worry about going to the plate and wasting all that extra energy.
It is what it is.Congrats to Ichiro! He doesn't make the rules,he just plays by them.

How many hits did Ichiro have through 154 games? And how many games has Ichiro played in? And how many games did Sisler miss that season?
You can go on and on with reasons for an asterisk. Same thing in football when the moved the goalposts to the back of the endzone or went to a 16 game season.
Congrats to Ichiro. Too bad he had so many seasons in Japan. He might be a threat to Rose's record.

Ichiro keeps himself in such great shape that he could, theoretically, make a run at 3,000.

I do not believe you can hold turf and slap hits againist him, as this is a different game than what it used to be and he is doing everything he can to get on base. The amopunt of games could lessin the effect of the record but anyway you look at it, he had one heckuva season

This is one of the most amazing records ever, that nobody cares about. I think it is great, but since ESPN doesnt make heads or tails of it, it is just about worthless.
Ichiro is the best contact hitter in baseball. He can kill you in so many ways.
