View Full Version : Slowing Lewis

One must not consider the recent events to slow Jamal Lewis. What has probably happened is a more motivated Lewis will emerge with nostrils flaring.
What Williams could do is use Lewis' aggression to his advantage. Lewis hits the hole where the blocker gives him enough room off the hip.
What Washington, Pierce and Marshall must do, is meet him early on "run blitzes", to keep Lewis from squaring his shoulders to the outside. The next phase would be to take intended losses further by blitzing the QB on second down, but doing so that Taylor and Bowen are at a mid-zone. This safeguards against gadgets, but keeps them close enough for the run. Of course it would resemble more of a stagger, so the offense and Lewis couldn't really tell which is back for pass or even which is blitzing, if at all.
Forcing the Ravens to use a short game and putting their QB in obvious passing situations, doesn't mean he'd do it, since at any time Lewis is capable of breaking off a big one on screens, flare outs and their favorite, running off Ogden's behind.
The best way to stop Lewis, is to get him before he gets started.

I agree, but I don't think it's our linebackers that will be making the most impact. We need to call timely gap blitzes and get our DLine into those holes. You don't have to hit Jamal behin the line you just have to make him reroute his path. that gives the other seven players a chance to fly to the ball.

Yeah I agree. You don't have to hit him behind the line every time.... Though it would be nice.

Jamal Lewis, meet Big Joe Salave'a. He has arms the size of most mens thighs. Have fun.

i feel out of line saying that we should fill the front row of the stadium with cops holding hand cuffs.....
hit him in the backfield. and when we hit him, make sure he falls down. that long run he broke off against cincy, he just bounced off the tacklers, and they didnt have anybody deep to stop him.

I just read that Gregg Williams emphasizes tackling in practices. Obviously, that's very smart since it does you no good to blitz the right gap, for example, if you don't make the tackle. Also, I'm guessing the 'skins will stack the box since the ravens have a minimal receiving capacity......so it seems at least.

oh yeah we should do that. bring in matt bowen, and leave sean taylor deep. if lewis breaks through that somehow, we will see just how ready taylor is for the nfl. if he makes an open field tackle on lewis, i will be very impressed with him. we can get by with man coverage. randy hymes is nothing to worry about when we have fred smoot and shawn springs.

Th importance of gang tackling is paramount in this game. I am just glad that both taylor and Bowen are good tacklers and like to come up in run support.

I guess the key to stopping lewis is not having an inept offense that cant sustain a drive.
