77% of the country gets the Yanks/Red Sox. The other 23% gets the Cardinals/Astros. Baseball v. Public Affairs. It's not looking good for public affairs, especially with Pedro Martinez on the mound. Half of America will tune in just to see if he whips one at Joe Torre in the dugout.

As akh said this debate is very much like the first. Its kinda sad, I know a few people that are watching strictly to see if Bob is going to pull on his ear to give the signal he promised to John Stewart last time he was on the daily show.

(Did i miss something? when did this turn into a religous "press conference")

Kerry doesnt look great, but Bush has looked uncomfortable throughout the election. Kerry is being clear, Bush isnt. Unless Kerry unzips his fly or Bush reveals a pic of Kerry and Osama having a Pina Colada together; Kerry looks like he won this debate.

Kerry has been very strong, but both of them look exhausted. It's not surprising, I suppose. We'll be lucky if both of them don't drop dead on election night.

That video will be all over tv tomorrow. I think kerry scored points on the minimum wage argument, and he was much more composed as usual. Not a big win, but bush looking uncomfortable on a few of the questions will hand kerry a small win in the debate.

It's so similar to what Brent Scowcroft, National Security Advisor to Bush 1.0, said in 2002 that I have to believe Kerry was cribbing off him.

A scientific poll by Gallup had the poll rated at 52-39 for Kerry.

Spence
10-13-2004, 11:43 PM
Early post-debate polls

CBS Kerry 39 Bush 25
ABC Kerry 42 Bush 41
CNN Kerry 52 Bush 39

The CBS poll is only among undecideds. The ABC polled 38% Republicans and only 30% Democrats, so that probably explains why it is the only poll that shows it close.

I have to say that Bob Schieffer was awful. [He's a golfing buddy of Bush's, by the way.] We know that both men love their wives, but there where were the questions about stem cell research, outsourcing, trade, global warming, etc? Is Schieffer really as much of a lightweight as he appeared to be tonight. I spoke with him for about 30 seconds at the National Press Club earlier this year [before he started looking around for someone older and more famous] and he seemed rather vacuous to me, but I figured he was just a bit dazed from the three glasses of wine I saw him drink while the Prime Minister of Australia was droning on. Maybe it's a more permanent condition.

I thought the debate went as expected

Kerry outlined a plan for healthcare....

Bush did not have a plan and attacked Kerry's plan

Kerry talked about how he would make women's wages fair

Bush did not even address the issue

Kerry talked about not rolling back affirmative action

Bush talked about education instead of answering the question

Kerry talked about how Illeagal immigration hurts the middle class (immigrants tend not to settle in rich neighborhoods....unless rich people need cheap labor)

Bush talked about how he was govenor in a border state but did not answer the question

Kerry talked about outsourcing of jobs and provided answers

Bush said that he would provide education to those laid off

Bottom Line: Kerry is providing answers and Bush is not. If you do not have a job or healthcare you are still waiting after 4 years for the president to introduce some type of plan.

Kerry is connecting with the undecided while Bush is solidifying his base.

This is a quote from W last night;

"I believe the best way to help our small businesses is not only through small-business loans, which we have increased since I've been the president of the United States, but to unbundle government contracts so people have a chance to be able to bid and receive a contract to help get their business going."

I'm confused on his position, does he favor no-bid contracts or not? He says he is for opening contracts to the best bidder, but how does he explain giving Halliburton a no-bid contract worth billions?

Spence
10-14-2004, 01:07 PM
Not just one no-bid contract to Halliburton, Lake. There have been more.

Here is another W lie:

"Anyway, let me quote the Lewin report. The Lewin report is a group of folks who are not politically affiliated. They analyzed the senator's plan. It cost $1.2 trillion. The Lewin report accurately noted that there are going to be 20 million people, over 20 million people added to government-controlled health care. It would be the largest increase in government health care ever."

In actuality "Kerry's plan would leave 97% with the insurance they have now -- while up to 27 million who aren't insured would gain coverage." This is sourced to the same Lewin Group. Let's take a closer look at the Lewin Group findings.

The Lewin Group Compares Key Findings of the Candidates’ Plans
W's figures are first Kerry's second.

Reduction in Uninsured 8.2 million; 25.2 million
Percent Reduction in Uninsured 17 %; 51 %
Net Change in Employer Coverage (1.2 million); 2.1 million
Total Federal Net Expenditures $227.5 billion; $1,249.0 billion
Total State Net Expenditures ($19.9 billion); ($343.5 billion)
Changes in Employer Health Spending ($4.7 billion); ($52.1 billion)
Changes in Private Insurance Market $9.9 billion; ($773.9 billion)
Net Change in Yearly Average Family Health Care Spending (with plans unfunded by any tax changes) $68; ($451)

Bottom line, under W's plan only 8.2 million people would gain insurance and the average family health care spending would increase $68.

Kerry's plan would give 25.2 million people health care insurance and reduce the average cost to a family by $451.

Here is another W plan on jobs from the debate:

"I've got policies to continue to grow our economy and create the jobs of the 21st century. And here's some help for you to go get an education. Here's some help for you to go to a community college.

We've expanded trade adjustment assistance. We want to help pay for you to gain the skills necessary to fill the jobs of the 21st century. "

What does he think the jobs of the 21st century are? Above is his solution to addressing the outsourcing of american jobs. He think education will eliminate and offset losses overseas. What is he talking about? Tell me what are the jobs of the 21st century? Is it a ray gun operator? Because these following jobs are being outsourced, all of which are very education based 21st century type jobs, (other than the ray gun operator).

Computer programmer
Lawyer
Accountant
Insurance sales
Chemists
Physicists

W, has absolutely no plan or desire to end the exodus of american jobs.

Good job swinging this back to the Presidential candidates, where it started.

If my wife's grandparents were still alive, I'm sure they'd make fun of Leitrim too. After all they did leave the place.
