RED SOX BEATING THE YANKS!

Yeah, there's not much contest there.
I would like to give honorable mention to:
1) Smarty Jones in the Preakness: 11 lengths was it?
2) Tarver leveling Roy Jones: Best pound for pound drops in the second with a single punch?

I agree with SkinsKY the sudden downfall of Roy Jones has to be way up there. Since boxing isn't nearly as popular as baseball and all other sports it won't get the consideration. But you have a guy who not more then a year ago was mentioned as possibly one of the greatest boxers EVER! And in his last 2 fights he has been KOed twice.

Sox beating the Yankees, soon to be topped by Sox winning their first World Series since 1918.

I'm going with the homer selection....Joe Gibbs returning to the sidelines for the Redskins.
Hey, thats my biggest news of the year so far.

not just that the sox beat the yanks, but that they forced a game 7 after beiing down 3 games to none, and then dominating game 7 in a record-breaking series. first team to force a game 7 in the ALCS after being down 3 games to none. longest game in postseason history. the wild overtime games.

I want to say Gibbs, but the BoSox erasing a 3-0 deficit, something that has never been done before in the history of baseball, is quite impressive.

For me personally, it's Gibbs coming back. For the rest of the country, it's probably the Red Sox. But to me, Gibbs coming back and the Red Sox beating the Yankees doesn't even compare.

Boston coming back to win in the manner in which you expect them to lose has to be at the top of the list.
I would also include Lance Armstrong's record setting #6 in the Tour de France very high on the list.

Internationally:
Lance wins the tour and...
GREECE WINS EURO 2004!
In the US:
1918 is no more.
Pat Tillman dies
In D.C.:
Joe Gibbs is back in town
Baseball is back in town
Steve Spurrier is out of town.

I'll jump on the bandwagon...The Red Sox winning 8 in a row to win the ALCS and the World Series.

I think Lance's accomplishments have to be considered (6th straight TDF win). But I would vote the Sox's 8 game winning streak after being down 3 to 0 to the Yanks.

It's either the Red Sox winning because their joke of a stadium has a 3 foot wall that turned a real double into a ground rule double or the amount of bandwagoners who jumped on and now call themselves fans.

I'll go with Kenteris and Taniou. 2004 was a major year for the fight against doping. All those US athletes being caught with Balco or other. The gold medals taken out of some cheaters was one big story. Once US pro sports will comply to AMA (world anti-doping association) it will be great!

I'll go with the Sox winning the Series as the biggest American Sports Story and the Greek National Soccer team winning the Euro Cup in Soccer against 100-1 Odds as the biggest International story.
Simply Unbeleivable!
Bravo Hellas!!!

I also agree although the Sox are right up there. Its not fair to ask me b/c I don'tcare for baseball as much any more. The NHL strike was big news for the wrong reasons. Steroids started in 2004.

Sox, without a doubt. I find i interesting only one mention of the Lakers. They dominated our headlines pretty much all year. With the trail, Shaq vs Kobe, Phil and the bosses daughter...it had it all, made for TV. I hated it too, but the question was biggest story, i think it has to be right there.
