Just wondering who we can pin as the core group of guys that Gibbs will be molding the team around.

The only ones who I'm pretty sure of are Smoot and Jansen. They're the only 2 who to the best of my knowledge have been singled out. I think Portis, Lavar, Pierce, Samuels, Jacobs, Taylor, and Coles might be them, but I'm not sure. I kinda hope that Ramsey is, but my impression on what the coaching staff thinks of him is pretty low right now.

Any thoughts on who the core group is, or who is definitely not in the group?

Brunell, Ray Brown, Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith.

No, just kidding :bsmile:

Smoot and Jansen are; and I definately agree with the rest of your list.

After this season, I think we'll be able to pin Pierce onto that list, and POSSIBLY Sean Taylor.

Despite the flak he got for last week's party, I'd also add Gardner. Yeah he makes mistakes, but he's been around as long as anyone and is a major part of our offense this year.

Thrash. He is the epitomy of the blue collar, hard working Redskin. Doesn't draw attention to himself, doesn't hurt the team with silly mistakes and off field problems. Plays above his physical skills.

any body have thoughts on Coles, Ramsey, or Taylor? I like these guys, but it almost seems like they aren't major cogs. Coles has been playing hurt, Taylor I think will come along, but what about Ramsey? Is he outta here?

Agreed. Wish we could see a little more of him on the field. How long is his contract? He could probably be a much bigger part of some other offenses but I'd hate to see him go.

John Feinstein once wrote that the great NFL teams have seven players:
A good QB(which we don't have)
A good RB(which we have)
A dependable reciever(either WR or TE)(which we have)
A top flight O-lineman(Jansen or Thomas)
A pass rusher(nien)
A dominate Secondary player(now is springs, will be Taylor)
A run stopper(two of them)

Guys like LA, Portis, Coles, Smoot, Jansen, Taylor, Thomas, Washington (wow we got a lot of good players) are keepers, and the others are just fill in the blanks. I just think we're missing an outstanding quarterback and a pass rusher.

I this point I'd settle for a subpar QB :banghead:

Hopefully through the progression of this season we can add Taylor Jacobs to that list.

What about Cooley? Isn't his style exactly what Gibbs likes?

Going forward, I mean.. Not in his rookie season...

I was thinking, before his injury and all, that LaVar would finally take the title of the new-age "Mr. Redskin." Not yet I guess though :(

yeah, whenever Jacobs is on the field, he makes plays. I would like to see much more of him. I think he's the replacement for Gardner: he's quicker and faster than Drop-Rod

Yeah I'd like to see Jacobs more often, too. We don't really know what we have with him. I'd like to see some shots to him down the field, I haven't seen his speed much yet.

They were giving him space against Green Bay, so they thought he has speed. He's a quick WR: not really a burner but gets you turned around a lot. He reminds me a lot like a low rent Hines Ward or Terry Glenn. Very fluid player.

That's what I was thinking too. We're yet to see his toughness level either. We'll see how it goes as the season goes on.

I have always thought that Jon Jansen played the game the way Gibbs wanted it played.

If anyone is a Redskin, it's him.
