View Full Version : What will it take to get us excited again?

There is a ton of justifiable negativity around here surrounding Brunell and the passing game. Emotions have gone from anticipation and optimism (before the season), jubilation (after game 1), disappointment and disbelief (games 2 and 3) to frustration and anger (games 4-7).
The defense has been solid all year, the running game seems to be finding it's way of late, turnovers are getting fewer, and special teams had a big day Sunday. It appears, piece by piece, we are starting to put a full effort together. But, of course, then, there is the passing game.
My question is this: What will it take to get us excited again? Would a couple of wins in a row do it or will be only be excited if the passing game gets on track?

Hey, I'm still excited!
Same here! We're only one game out of the playoff race, sure I want to put my head through the wall watching Brunell sometimes but we've got a great chance to turn things around here with a winnable game vs. Cincy and then a shot to take down the Eagles. I'm jacked up for Sunday.

every unit playing good at the same time is what we need. all season the D have carried the team while the O (except for 3 games by Portis) and ST have struggled (except for Tupa).. but the ST broke out last week and i feel the entire Offense will come through sooner or later. but we need them to break out in THIS game! the muscle part of the schedule is coming up @Philly, @Steelers, Giants and Philly the next 4 games.. one game at a time but we also need a lot of improvement on O at a time as well.

We're starting to play 4 quarters again.The turnovers of the 1st 5 weeks are about gone and we're starting to win a couple of games.It's a work in progress,but we are progressing.Just hang in there folks.A few more wins and we'll have "playoff fever"!!!
Gibbs has us moving in the right direction,albeit slowly.

If we can play the same game vs cincy that would make my day. I know it's not that exciting, but I still go crazy when we win.

A couple more wins would get me excited, no matter how we win them. but a good passing game on sunday would get me excited a lot faster, even without a win.

Gibbs just echoed what I said in a post yesterday, today!
An excerpt from www.redskins.com article on Mark Brunell
"This Sunday, against the Cincinnati Bengals at FedExField, playing conservatively on offense may not be the best plan of attack, Gibbs said.
Cincinnati is ranked 25th in overall offense, but they have a trio of young, up-and-coming players in quarterback Carson Palmer, running back Rudi Johnson and wide receiver Chad Johnson.
"The Bengals are really talented on offense," Gibbs said. "We'll probably be much more aggressive than we were against Detroit. We're going to have to match their play and score points."
Even so, the Bengals' defense is ranked last in the league against the run-which would seem to suggest a heavy workload for tailback Clinton Portis.
Gibbs stressed that a balanced attack is the best way to attack a Marvin Lewis-led defense.
"They're going to give you every look you can think of," Gibbs said. "It's hard preparation. We were in here late last night trying to find something that would work. You go up against their defense and they pressure you from all over the place.
"We have great respect for them. Any team that can beat up Dallas solidly the way they did, and beat Denver, certainly has our respect. We're going to have to play great."
Translation the TEAM is ready to put a solid all around performance together. It was starting to happen in the second half last week and Joe Gibbs' ready to unload on a formidable opponent.

I would become very exited if we can come out of the next 5 games (Cincy, Philly, Steelers, Giants, Philly) with a record of 4-1. Basically we would have to beat the teams we should (Cincy and NY) and win 2 of 3 against some tough competition (Philly, Pittsburg). This would show me that we are making progress and are ready to make a push towards the playoffs. I would be plain old regular excited if we come out of those games 3-2 which would show me we are moving in the right direction alghough not quite there yet.

thank you pa skins girl. thank you. i was thinking of starting a similar thread myself but you beat me to it.
i responded to a post that whitskins made in another thread......
Yeah, at this point the idea of Ramsey getting in the game doesn't even register with me, it just doesn't seem like it's going to happen any time soon. All I do now is concentrate on ways we can possibly win with Brunell cause that seems like what we're stuck with.
im SO glad you said this and i hope everyone reads it. i think alot of people are taking this season for granted and aren't enjoying the team the way they should (win or lose) and i feel sorry for them. im not just talking about hR posters either.
the only thing i need to get me excited for a game is the game itself. i love football and i love the skins. if we were 0-8, i'd still be excited for the game on sundays......

I looked at this thread as what could get us excited about the season and not just the Redskins in general because I am always excited before games and go through withdraw during the week (which is why I'm always poking around here!).

i'm still excited and will always be excited, we are one step away from being a dominate team, its so close I can taste it and that keeps me excited. we have yet to see the full force of the defense, special teams has arrived, portis (when given the carries) is going over a hundred yards despite our passing game. a couple of good throws and catches at the right times and teams will be saying "oh crap we have to play the Redskins next week."

I am still excited because we are still very much in the playoff hunt.
What would really help is having the a complete football team. As this team stands right now, it cannot compete against the likes of Philly and Pittsburgh.
The bottom line is we are not a balanced team and you cannot win in the NFL without balance. Sooner or later your lack of balance will bite you in the arse. With our current QB, that bite in the arse is quickly approaching.

I still get excited heading into each Sunday, but I wouldn't mind seeing Brunell throw for more than 200 yards and a punt / kick-off return by Thrash would be nice.

Redskins fans have no heart... at this point they'll all probably jump on the bandwagon if we find a way to get back to .500, but there is definitely a sense of "instant gratification" that has soured what used to be a proud, loyal, and strong group of people.

Redskins fans have no heart...
I don't think its fair to lump everyone, who has loved the Redskins for their entire lives with some misguided fans who don't have a clue to what they are saying or doing.
What would it take for me to be excited again? Well, I'm always excited. It start building up on Thursday. Friday....a little more. Saturday....I'm going crazy waiting for the game. Sunday morning is the longest part of the week for me. Once the kickoff has happened, its the quickest 3 hours ever. Then I start the entire process over again. So I haven't loss any excitement.
But, i'd be willing to take a winning streak and Brunell to start playing better. I would love to see our offense gain 400+ yards. 100-150 yards on the ground. 250-300 yards thru the air. 30 points in consecutive games and our defense to continue to play up their level right now.
Perhaps too much to ask for but thats what I'd like to see. Mainly just to keep people from bashing our HOF coach.....coach Gibbs.

I gotta disagree with you there SM. The "true" Redskins fans have alot of heart. Just because people complain when things aren't goin' well doesn't mean they lack heart. We want to win badly. Alot of us are just average wage earners. Yet we sacrifice things like new cars and going on vacations so we can save our money for season tickets. We go the games whether it be rain, sleet, snow or shine. We cheer as loud as humanly possible whether we're 1 - 14 or 14 - 1. Our lives revolve around the Redskins. Granted a large contingency of what you see represented at the stadium is not the "true" redskin fan and that saddens me.
But I know a bunch of Redskins fans with ALOT of heart!!! I think you should strongly reconsider your comment. You appear to be passionate about the skins. Do you consider yourself heartless?

i hear you, but unfortunately i have witnessed the steadily decline in the best fans in pro sports. obviously this isn't everyone... but enough that it makes you wonder what happened???
12 years really isn't that long considering some teams have never won one (iggles) and many long time franchises have NEVER been (lions, seahawks, cardinals, browns, etc)... people need to understand that winning a SB is extremely difficult (next to impossible) and we have a coach that won THREE!
patience is the word of the day... i honestly feel something building, and i hope i'm right.

11-12-2004, 12:29 PM
Yeah, the Williams news definitely got me excited.
In terms of fan loyalty, at teh beginning of the season the Skins were ranked the most valuable team in the NFL. That's partly because we have an owner who can pour millions intoo the team, but also partly because we have loyal fans who are willing to pay top dollar to fill the largest stadium in the NFL. Money isn't a perfect measure of fan faith, but it's not bad.
Also, if you ask any Skins fan at the beginning of any given year how we're going to do, the expectations are always high. Then we get disapointed and pissed off, but i guarantee that now matter how this season turns out, at the beginning of next year we'll all be predicting great things. Hell, we're predicting great things for next season already. There's only one other team I know with this kind of fan faith, and they just won the world series.

What will it take to get us excited again?
Well, I can't speak for anyone but myself and I think some have already been suggested but this would do it for me:
90000+ fans Sunday, cheering at the top of their lungs;
3 TDs anyway we can;
400 yards of offense - by our team - in one game;
Couple of cold beers before, during, and after the game;
An 8 game win streak;
Bunnell putting an end to the debate - by performing well;
Never having to discuss booing against the Skins again;
Watching the Funky Four taking the home crowd over the edge;
Seeing us in the top 5 of the Power Poll;
A Monday full on nothing but happy hR members;
Almost forgot.....Redskinette uniform malfuntion (OK OK, it's a male thing);
Yep, that would about do it!

I've been cridical of our qb play thus far this season, but I believe this is the week we turn the season around. Something tells me MB has a stellar game this week and win by at least 10 points. I'm always excited about Redskins football. A couple of articals that I've read this morning (Greg Williams and Mark Brunell) have changed my outlook and I truly expect a great second half of the season. I will stand behind Joe Gibbs in whatever decision he makes. After all, he is in the HOF for a reason.

Offense would get me excited. I love great defenses dont get me wrong, but there is nothing like knowing that your team is going to come out with a smart QB and a hard working RB and light up the scoreboard. Ive tried to get the wife to watch a few games(not yet a skin fan but Im working on it) but its been one punt after another and she told me recently that she would rather look at cheese melt in the oven.

Bingo - or Dallas.
If the team ends up playing solid ball, except for one position QB, I'll be happy. Replacing a QB, with the rest of the team showing tight football skills, won't be that tough.
We replace Brunnell in 2005 with another veteran FA QB:
and either trade Ramsey for a second round draft pick - then draft a QB;
or he plays and competes with the new vet FA QB.
