ASHBURN, Va. (AP) As a coach, Joe Gibbs is in the Hall of Fame. As a team president, he's a mere rookie. Like most rookies, he has mixed results to show for his work.

"My assessing myself comes down to wins and losses," the Washington Redskins coach said. "Not real good, right now."

Two weighty issues have dominated the talking points at Redskins Park this week as Gibbs struggles with a 3-8 record: Would the coach be better off with a general manager, restoring the checks-and-balances dynamic that helped him win three Super Bowls, and will he guarantee that he will coach next year?

The second question stems from an ESPN report Sunday that Gibbs, a 64-year-old diabetic, would possibly step down as coach at the end of the season for health reasons. Gibbs is so tired of denying the report that by midweek he was questioning the professionalism of the reporting involved.

Yeah,the Washington Redskins.
The team that everyone loves to bash.
I think that this is good.
You know that Gibbs is boiling over this stuff.
Winning will change the subject. And when we start....
Watch Out!

Title gave me a heart attack as well. We should be a good story next year when the expectations are tempered and we has some consistency and continuity.

Agreed, title freaked me out too. Gibbs is a winner. He'll get his "real Redskins" and turn this around. The Giants game will be a great starting point.

that was me. :D

im telling you, changes are coming. maybe not huge ones, but ones that will have a positive impact on the direction of the team. gibbs pretty much hates the media and when he hears what these "professional journalists" are saying about him, i think it gives him that extra push to get back to winning so he can shut them all up.

I don't think that Gibbs "hates" anyone.

I do think that Gibbs should step down as team president and hire a GM. Not many coaches have been successful at both and I think it gives him more time to devote to fixing this woeful offense.

The editors of this article need to step it up when it comes to choosing a title. "Gibbs discusses life as a rookie team president, reports that he'll step down" sounds like he will step down as team president when in fact the article has two parts: 1 on his life as a rookie team president and the second on the rumors that he will step down due to health reasons.

A better title would have been "Gibbs discusses life as a rookie team president, denies rumors that he will step down."

Did you see the title in the off topic forum?

Pretty harsh when you read the entire story.

The acquisitions under the most scrutiny are Mark Brunell, Clinton Portis, Mike Barrow and Sean Taylor - who were given big, cap-stretching contracts in Gibbs' first attempt to deal with financial restraints that were not in place 12 years ago.

Quarterback Brunell is now benched with the worst stats in the league. Running back Portis has been a difficult fit for Gibbs' system, and his carries have diminished in recent weeks. Middle linebacker Barrow hasn't played because of a knee injury.

Taylor, the No. 5 overall draft pick, has played well, but his off-the-field troubles, including a drunken driving charge, hardly fit the profile of the "true Redskin" of character that Gibbs is seeking. Gibbs once called Taylor the most researched pick in history, but the research did not pay dividends.

Lets not be so quick to judge Taylor, people make mistakes. Ray Lewis is the face of the NFL now and I would say his involvement in a double murder is far worse than Taylor's mistakes.
