Charlie Weis never played football at Notre Dame. But he’s going to coach there.
Weis, 48, the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, is expected to be announced Monday as the next Irish head coach.
A Notre Dame official indicated Saturday night the signing of Weis “is not a done deal.” But several sources at the Notre Dame-DePaul men’s basketball game that tipped off at 5:00 p.m. EST Saturday night said that it would be Weis who would succeed Tyrone Willingham, who was fired on Nov. 30.

Great news. I'm not a ND fan but I think Weis is way overdue to be a HC and now we can keep Greg Blache around.

not to mention its more than what spurrier is getting
its a great move by the irish, but im surprised that weis didnt hold out for an nfl job, even if he'd have to wait for the pats to finish the postseason.

Did Weis leave NE immediately? I couldn't tell if he was with the team on Monday night or not. Anyone know?

He will finish the season with N.E. This is from the Patriots site.
Foxborough, Mass. - All of the speculation regarding the immediate future of Charlie Weis was answered Monday.
The University of Notre Dame announced at a press conference this morning that Weis has been named the head football coach of the Fighting Irish. Weis, and minutes later Patriots head coach Bill Belichick from his daily press conference, confirmed that the Patriots offensive coordinator would remain with the team through the end of the 2004 season.

Won't that hurt Weis' recruiting efforts, or is that all over know for this season?

I thought they said he would assemble a staff and they would do most of the recruiting while Weis was busy with NE. It would not be quite as effective as the head coach doing the in person recruiting but I guess he has no choice
