MIAMI -- With no plans for a playoff, the Bowl Championship Series will consider using a committee of college football experts to set the next national title game.

"I have to tell you, I really do not see an NFL-style playoff coming to college football any time soon," BCS coordinator and Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said Tuesday.

Weiberg also said the BCS will search for a replacement for the Associated Press poll to help rank the top teams.

Five teams took perfect records into this bowl season, prompting many fans, players and even some coaches to call for a playoff format.

Auburn and Utah won their bowl games, and Boise State lost for the first time. Southern California and Oklahoma will play for the BCS title Tuesday night in a matchup of unbeatens in the Orange Bowl.

Weiberg said he is "very interested" in a committee structure that would be similar to the one used to set the field for the NCAA basketball tournaments.

Nothing like determining a national champion in a meeting room instead of the playing field.

Committee of college football experts: A bunch of men who will make their decisions based on who gives them the most money.

Very true ... every system they can come up with will be flawed in some aspect. I don't see why a playoff is a bad thing - they can turn the bowl games into games during the playoffs so those arenas don't lose any money, just rotate the "super bowl" game between the 4 sites like they do now for the national championship game.

You know what? I bet even a playoff system would be flawed. You'll always have enough teams qualified to make the playoff system. But everyone can't go.

Say if you took the top 4 or top 8. There's will be media outlets proclaiming that a certain team deserved to be the #4 or #8 team, but was left out.

Still, the playoff system is the best way to go.

True ... how awesome would the month of December be if there were college playoff games every weekend leading up to the New Year? That would rule. I think you need to get rid of the automatic bids and remove all personal bias and just make a BCS formula ... I don't know I'm rambling.

I totally agree though. That would be awesome! And why can't they name the playoff games, "The Fiesta Bowl"? Or, "The Orange Bowl"? That way the sponsers would be happy and the fans would be happy.

I guess there's more to it though....

DII/DIII play for the love of the game. DI colleges are worried about getting paid to stay competitive....

College football will continue to be a mess until they get a playoff system. It will still be messy then, but much less so. I think the eight team format would be best. By then, you're probably getting to the two-three loss teams and they may complain they deserve to go, but with two losses, they won't have much of a case.

Amen.

I stopped watching College football years ago because of this. The only D1 game I'll watch (other than a Tulane game) is the Army/Navy game. When they fix the championship process and allow teams a chance to decide it on the field then I'll watch again.

If they were to adopt an 8-team playoff, sure some teams might be able to argue that they deserved to be in because they were one of the top 8, and that is likely to happen. However it is unlikely that any team with a legit claim at the #1 spot will be left out.

It's easy to see why the Major Conferences don't want a Playoff System either...

The Majors ( Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-10, and Southeastern Conference) rake in hefty rewards when they are represented in BCS Games and even more so when 2 teams from the same Conference make it to a BCS game.

I guess it's all about the redistribution of wealth...It's all about exposure for the big schools and the revenue it brings in. I don't expect to see a change to a playoff format in my lifetime...

Also, does anyone know who is going to the Big East to replace Miami, Va. Tech and BC? Whatever schools do must be having visions of dollar signs in their heads!

Sample 2005 BCS Revenue Distribution
