has expressed confidence the team will have the financial flexibility to make key acquisitions while retaining most of the club's own free agents.

Notice the word most. I bet that means Smoot.

"We kind of know where we are," said Gibbs, who wouldn't specify the club's spending money, except to describe it as being substantial. "Obviously you project where the cap's going to be. And then [there are moves] we can do to free up money in there. We've got a great plan."

Part of Washington's free agency plan is not going over its budget, which is why Smoot's chances of returning appear slim. "If you can get rid of Champ Bailey," a Pro Bowl cornerback traded last offseason, said linebacker LaVar Arrington, "then nobody is safe. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't re-sign him."

Interesting comment from LaVar about Smoot.

Smoot appears as good as gone but we'll see what kind of attention that he gets from other teams. I really want us to sign Pierce now.

the Tennessee Titans are roughly $20 million over the cap, and will be forced to trim that money -- mostly by releasing players

hmm.. notice how we don't hear about other team's being in "cap hell" (it might've been mentioned but i haven't heard anything about the Titans situation til' now), but we're always supposedly going to be in cap hell.

so Smoot and the Skins' are $4M apart in the SB. so he wants $14M which is right in between Champ and Springs who were both top 10 picks and probowlers. good luck Fred. his best chance would be for the Skins' to meet him in the middle and give him $12M.

The Titans were devestated by the cap last offseason as well, who is their capologist over there?

Smoot wanting a 14 mil signing bonus is way out of wack, I assume this will take some time b/c he'll want to see what he can get from other teams, a truly desperate team might bite on it but it'll cost them their first rounder too hopefully.

Smoot is gone. Too bad.

I believe you are right.I was hoping to resign Smoot but hopefully we can replace him for less money. If Smoot leaves, I would think getting a pass rush has to be moved to the top of the list if it wasn't already

Ugh. I can't believe this Smoot situation. If you had told me a month ago that Smoot wouldn't be a Skin next year, I would have called you crazy.

Anybody know who smoot's agent is?

Anybody know who smoot's agent is?

from the looks of things, you'd guess his former agents, the Postons were handling his negotiations. he fired them last year but it seems like his new agent wants MORE then his value so might as well have stuck w/ the Postons.

Hopefully his new agent is willing to drop these ridiculous salary demands and compromise.

I was afraid it was the Postons becuz if that were the case there would be zero chance smoot would be a skin next year. Hopefully his new agent will be reasonable and realize this is where smooty belongs at a very generous offer from the skins.

I'm glad he's looking down the road and I hope they stick to the budget. That shows significant progress on Danny's part.

Personally, I think the blame is 50/50. No, not Gardner silly, both the agent and Smoot. I'm sure Smoot told him where to start off with.

I'd take a #1 for smoot though...

can we get anything for smoot or is he just gone, and we cant just keep giving up corners on our team

I think Gibbs is right on course. I love Smoot, but he needs to come back to planet earth with those contract demands.

The Samuels situation deserves some close study because that can alter our draft if things go sour. If he restructures life is good and we can go forward with a pretty decent amount of cash.

To me, Pierce is a greater priority than Smoot. I love Smoot, but I thought the offer was fair and if he can get better from another team then I wish him good luck.

Interesting comment from LaVar about Smoot.

That comment seems mighty funny coming from Lavar. Sounds like he spends some time in the front office...interesting

Although it would suck to lose Smoot - he isnt worth the money he is requesting. Starting to sound like a Champ disease and with that I say let him go...

I dont think Samuels will be a problem. He isnt unaware of the fact that he didnt play well this last year an so his best chance is to restructure and stay with the Skins. (Which I think he will do).

Pierce and Clemons will both remain with us in the end. Pierce loves it here and sees a great opportunity with Coach Williams - and Clemons needs another year in the league before he has any weight to his argument... he will take what we offer.

Samuels will restructure. I feel more confident in that than Smoot signing. Indy doesn't have the money to give him, but KC might be willing to offer it up. Maybe Minnesota. I'm not sure who they have across from Winfield, but adding Smoot makes it a top CB tandem. It seems Smoot will just be made an example as the FO mentality shifts towards a more long-term focus.

Restructuring Samuels is more important than keeping Smoot, although I will miss Fred if he goes. He has had alot of injuries and probably wants to get paid because he may not have another chance to sign a long deal.

I agree - Fred has a personality to envy. It will suck if he goes - but what else can be done?

Smoot is a great CB as is Champ (overrated, but still great compared to his peers) The problem is that just a few short years ago we would overpay guys like Arrington, Samuels, etc and now that we are moving towards a more conservative financial approach, players still want to "get their's". I'm still critical of the deals we gave Portis and Brunell but you have to start somewhere... Teams like the Colts with a couple superstars won't win. Teams like the Patriots with cap money spread across the board and solid players at every position will win. We need to run the organization more like the Pats or Iggles in terms of not being afraid to let over paid guys leave... Who knows, maybe Smoot will come back one day.

Excellent point. It hurts to see a guy like Smoot go but we need to be more focused on the quality of our team rather than the name.

Interesting comment from LaVar about Smoot.

I hope Lavar understands that part of the reason we can't keep everyone, like Fred, is the big contract he got.
