(i have a headache, so maybe that triggered this frustration but...)

While I loathe the Eagles, you have to admire how they conduct their business. Locking up young players in long-term cap friendly deals. What annoys me about this is how much we're going to pay Pierce.

Now don't get me wrong Antonio, you're going to deserve just about every penny, but he was a RFA last year and we could have given him a small extension. I don't think anyone really predicted he'd do so well at MLB but everyone remembers the high praise he received from every coaching staff that's been here.

It's that foresight that annoys me because we're likely going to lose Pierce or Smoot by waiting till the end of their contract years to sign them. Pretty soon teams are going to start plucking our players and our progress will be stunted to an extent.

I know it's not feasible to extend everyone but there are certain players who fit the mold really well and you can probably sign them to a semi-longterm deal for a good price (Clemmons, Evans, Clark). Some of you may argue that the system makes these players good. To really excel you need continuity.

Alright... sorry for venting... i'm sick and I just saw something that Pierce will be one of the most costly FAs and it annoyed me because we're probably letting Smoot walk. Carry on...

It's a good thought Truant and I agree. Waiting until a contract year to extend someone can really bite you.

actually we were working on a deal with peirce somewhere in the range of 6 years and a 5 million signing bonus

I agree with you Truant, but even if we had extended Pierce before this year, who's to say he wouldn't have asked for more after the season?
As far as Smoot, he got a fair offer and can take it or leave.

I think the downside to the Eagles way of doing business is that they end up with a plethera of young players - choosing to send the older experienced veterans packing with chips on their shoulders... and that may very well be why they choke when it counts... no seasoned vets.

You are correct - they do a great job during the season - but as I stated above - something just keeps them from all the marbles.

Andy Reid has all my respect as a great coach. they seem to lose key players every year and plug in new ones. they stay way under the cap (i bet reid wishes he had an owner with pockets as deep as Snyder) and Reid makes them contenders. but it's true, they are always bridesmaids at the end, never the bride, not yet anyway.

Welcome my friend guys. He's an Eagles fan as you can tell but he's pretty knowledgable and open minded about the NFL. And he puts up with me talking about our Skins.

I would have to say yeah we need to get some of our youngsters taken care of early on, but Pierce hasn't done jack crap until he got his opportunity this year. We need to keep him. I have no faith in Barrow and hope we send him packing.

Welcome to hR McNabb. If you're a friend of Ramsey2Coles, you're a friend of ours. Just please keep it civil. We've had our share butt-head Eagle fans this year.

Can you do me a favor though? Can you please downsize your sig? Its way over our limit here. It needs to be smaller than 400x400.

thanks.

You may want to consider changing your user name to something like 'McNabb2Pinkston4incompletion' while TO is out.

Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest. I was amusing myself way to much.

Living nin the Philly media area, I see a lot more of them than anyone should ever have to see, but here are my observations:

1) Yes, the Iggles do a great job at locking in good talent early. But for that you need to have the same coaching staff and front office in place for more than a season or two. I'd think we're moving in that direction now with Gibbs and eventually GW. Take Pierce for example.... He definitely showed flashes of being a solid player under Marty and we could possible have signed him longer term for cheaper than he'll get next season. Not to mention there is minimal risk because of the smaller siging bonus.

2) One thing the Iggles do not do well is (as mentioned) keep veteran leadership around. I'm sorry, but they have TONS of cap space, and paying a guy like Trotter (who was still young but also considered a leader on the field) would have really been smart for them. He fits in JJ defense that allows him more ability to freelance. I am still FURIOUS that he made it to the Pro Bowl, but that is another post for another time... (and I think it should be a poll). Duece Staley is another great example. They really could use a guy like him in short yardage.

3) Another thing the Iggles do well (this is the oreo cookie method) is the draft. they are far from perfect or the best with jusdging talent, but they never draft for an immediate need. They always take a player with an eye to 2-3 years down the road. Of course you can't do this if you are in the top ten of the draft (those guys make money and need to contribute), but I love how the put young players in a position to compete for a job without relying on them to win the job.

Andy Reid also need to quit being so stubborn and run the ball in the playoffs. Arguably he doesn't have the horses in the barn to do it now, but Duce ran all over both Tampa and Carolina at times and Reid didn't stick with it. WHY??

Personally I don't care as I LOVE seeing Iggle fans cry and swear.

LOL!

I certainly would rather be the chick who got some in the past and will get some in the future than the gal who keeps getting left at the alter.

(Did I just say I wanted to be a chick?)

Welcome and look forward to having maybe one civilized Iggle fan around.

Your right, and we all know there has been absolutely no continuity here for the last 5 years. I do believe we are going to have it for the near future. I hope Danny has learned his lesson. Hopefully the other lesson he learned was don't give over the hill players a big bonus and contract.

Yeah, well the downside of the way we do business is to pay lots more money and not even get a whiff of the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. Geez, let's field a competative team before we call a team which has owned chokers.

Let's think about it: What veteran "leaders" have we kept around? Arrington, maybe Jansen, (and they have only been around 5 or six years) who else? Every other guy we have or had who is/was a standout/leader player we are talking about losing to FA or trading, or already lost.
