COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nik Caner-Medley scored 26 points, and Maryland kept Virginia winless in the Atlantic Coast Conference by pulling away to an 82-68 victory Wednesday night.

Ekene Ibekwe had 12 points for Maryland (11-4, 2-2), including seven in a pivotal run that brought the Terrapins back from a 51-46 deficit.

Elton Brown scored 18 points and Devin Smith had 17 for the Cavaliers (9-6, 0-5). Virginia last started 0-5 in the ACC during the 1998-99 season, coach Pete Gillen's first at the school.

The Cavaliers went 7-for-31 from the floor in the second half and scored only 27 points over the final 20 minutes. Virginia is 1-11 in its last 12 games at Maryland.

Down by five early in the second half, the Terrapins used a 14-2 spree to go up 60-53 with 12 minutes left. Caner-Medley scored the first seven points on a drive, a 3-pointer and a jumper in the lane, and Ibekwe capped it with two baskets and a three-point play.

After Jason Cain scored for Virginia, Maryland's Mike Jones hit a 3-pointer and Ibekwe added a dunk for a 10-point cushion.

Before the game, the Terrapins announced that sophomore guard D.J. Strawberry would be lost for the season with a torn ligament in his right knee. Strawberry, who was averaging 7.0 points a game, started three times this season.

Virginia also played short-handed. The Cavaliers announced Wednesday that forward Jason Clark, who started 12 games, would miss the rest of the season for academic reasons. Virginia was also without reserve center Donte Minter, who has a broken finger on his shooting hand.

Sean Singletary hit two 3-pointers to open the second half, helping the Cavaliers take a 49-42 lead, but the Cavaliers went cold after that.

After trailing by nine points with 7:45 left in the first half, Virginia closed strong to go up 41-40 at the break.

Caner-Medley scored 15 of the Terrapins' first 31 points, but Smith had 11 in the opening 12 minutes to keep the Cavaliers close. A driving layup by Smith brought Virginia to 28-23, but Caner-Medley answered with a 3-pointer and Ibekwe sank a free throw to give Maryland its biggest lead.

Smith then made two layups and J.R. Reynolds scored five points in a 12-0 spurt that put the Cavaliers in front 35-31.

The reason I posted this, was that there is what we call here in the DC Metro area, "The Potomac River Rivalry" between U of MD and the U of VA.

I have a few friends from VA that said that UVA was going to beat UMD last night.

Not only did they say that they were going to win, but also beat the Terps like the Tarheels did a couple of weeks ago.

They MUST be smoking some good s**t. :lol1:

definately a good win by the Terps. Considering Strawberry is out.

Its pretty evident that all ACC teams has to win at home. Its clear that its going to be tough to win on the road this year.

Very tough! Wake goes down to FSU.... The Heels struggled with Clemson...

Where are the cupcakes I was promised?

UVA sucks this year. I had some hopes for them when they knocked off #11 ranked Arizona early in the year...

MD plays great at home, so I expected them to win this matchup. However, they have some tough road games ahead. They are going to have to start winning some of those if they want to make a run this year.

i would like to see maryland/virginia become a big rivalry, doesnt have to be as big as duke/unc though. personally, when it comes to basketball, i hate duke more, and with football, i just dont like FSU. i wish those would be considered rivalries.

mike jones hit that long 3 to put us up 63 - something(i think 53), and you just kinda felt that maryland wasnt going to blow it, and we sure didnt. the defense played great without strawberry, and we still played great even though gilchrist wasnt his usual self.

A good win for the Terps BUT I still got some major concerns with that team.

Gilcrest has lost himself in himself (if you know what I mean).
The team goes long periods without any focus.
No emotions (or very little anyway).
Too many poor shot selections.
Ekene Ibekwe has played invisible TOO much.
Nik Caner-Medley's play - How long will it last??

On the flip side - Will Bowers is getting more confidents each game.
James Gist is going to be awesome but doesn't need play like Ibekwe.
Mike Jones is trying to step it up.

IMO- they badly need a win over a Top25 team.

That's the point I was trying to make, dj.

All (well most) ACC teams are playing great at home this year. UVA has not played so great anywhere, and my friends said that UVA would beat the Terps like the Tarheels did.

What were they smoking? :lol1:

Patrick, I have some of the same concerns as you do.

Gary Williams better get this team focused more, or the Terps will be sitting at home this year instead of playing in the NCAA's.

UVA stays in every game, and is unable to put bad teams away (see wku). If UMD can win all, but two at home, and win two on the road, they should make the tournament.

You maybe correct but I'm NOT sure I really want see a mediocre MD team in the tournament. Playing like they are right now - would only be a set-up a first round lost in the NCAAs.

It was a win so thats good but overall I wasn't very impressed with the way Maryland played. Like Patrick said, this team has some major concerns. Lets just hope Gary can find a way to deal with them.

Word in the papers down here is Gillen is on the hot seat DJ. They are really hurting physically and I think Clark got suspended for the year for academic reasons...not looking good for Gillen right now.

If UVA didn't lose it's composure, the would have beat MD by double digits.

They're still a top 40 team. They would be on top of the pac 10 most likely, and if they are on the bubble reputation will be their best friend.

I don't know what happened to UVA really. Devin Smith was basically scoring at will but then he vanished. The broadcasters kept saying that UVA looked tired but I'm not sure how much that had to do with it.
