we're dead last in the league in points per game allowed at 101.6. only 1 of 2 teams allowing 100+ ppg and a whole point ahead the 2nd place team (Orlando 100.6). we average 102.2 scoring which is 4th in the league.
if we didn't have a good offense, we couldn't win a game.. but in reverse, if we had a good defense, we could win every game. we either get blown out or we blow teams out early only to hold on for dear life to win it. this might work in the regular season but come playoffs.. our D will be our achilles heel. let's hope Hughes comes back strong and this team learns to play some D.

Most games have been close at the end, whether they are letting a big lead get away or coming from behind. They've been on the winning side of most of those close ones, though. Exciting games to watch. I'm just enjoying the season. Playoffs? Well, they'll have to go through Miami and that will be the end of that.

they certainly are exciting and it has been a fun season so i'm not complaining about that. it has made the Skins' offseason a bit better to handle. just being a typical Washington fan, looking at things positively but negatively at the same time. we will make the playoffs.. and the only teams i fear are Miami, Detroit and Indiana.

We'll get better as time goes on I think, Eddie will get this team locked down.

There was a guy on wizards postgame radio a few weeks ago who was talking about how those points against averages are misleading because since the wizards play at such a high pace, the other team gets many more possesions than teams do against a team like san antonio which plays at a slower pace. You can check it out on wizfans.com where they do defensive boxscores which are very interesting.

that does make a difference. i read something about us leading the league in FG attempts. that's why we have the rep. of taking bad shots. our shot selection and D needs improving. i'm not complaining though.. they're doing much better than we all thought anyway.
let's look at the top 5 in scoring and see how many points they give up..
Phoenix 107.7 PPG, 99 PPGA
Dallas 103 PPG, 96.6 PPGA
Sacramento 102.6 PPG, 98.1 PPGA
Washington 102.2 PPG, 101.6 PPGA
Miami 101.6 PPG, 96.8 PPGA
we've still allowed about 100 points more than Phoenix (take our 38 games played and multiply the difference in PPGA which is 2.6). that's a whole game's worth more and yet we've scored about 200 points less than them.

i think the points per game allowed stat is a little misleading. We stop a lot of teams, like last nite. Toronto, I thought, was gonna only score 70 buy the looks of it in the 3rd qtr. But since we score soo much, the teams we play shoot more threes and are in a hurry to score more. Its kind of like the Colts. They usually score liek 35 a game, so the opponents always have to play catch up and pass alot. Dont get me wrong, our inside defense is horrible, but its not like our team doesnt know how to play d

i think one of our biggest problems on defense is that we are constantly undersized, we start jamison at the power forward position, when he is probably best suited for small forward and we had been starting hughes at the two guard which often forced to play a taller guard...
we get tons of steals to make up for it but teams get a lot of open shots on us....
this is fine for this year but if we want to make trouble for teams in the playoffs the defense is going to need to improve

While I am very proud of the Zards for playing hard and finally showing some results with all that talent, The lack of Defense will keep us as a sidenote when the real contenders start the quest for an NBA Championship.
If the Wizards are to be considered serious contenders they will either have to develop a defensive presence or trade/draft for one.
Until then..we will be the east coast version of the Dallas Mavericks.

I didn't know we were worst in the league ... that's sad. Amazing that we are 9 games over 500 tough. I too think Jordan will get this team more prepared and when Hughes comes back - - look out!

while they may have the most points allowed, the worst defense is definitely the bobcats, they cant stop anybody

Good point and I would take it this year, but being as though I am never satisfied with close but no cigar, I think I want them to play some defense at some point this year.
