I thought I had updated my IE last week and instead I think I sent it back a few years. I already hate Microsoft but here's my problem. When I click on the "quote" or "link" buttons on here or any site, nothing happens, it just reloads the page. I tried to go in and allow pop-ups but that isn't the problem. Any of you techies know what's going on or how I can fix it?

Switch to Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org).

I remember having a problem like that when I used IE. It was after I loaded a new toolbar and pop up blocker so I scrapped it and loaded the google toolbar. Even with that, I had to allow pop-ups from the sites I visited and they would appear in a small window that had to be opened to view. Finally, I switched to firefox and I never will use IE again.
Did you try to use firefox with AOL?

Interesting redskin_rich, I can understand the ad blocking if those buttons opened new windows but they don't.
Dave, what version of IE are you running (from menu Help->About IE)?

It won't even tell me that. It's blank next to the version.

I also cannot log on to sites like the Post and my bank. When I enter my username and password, it goes right back to the entry screen.

Here is a site you may want to check out. PLEASE read everything first !!!!!!
ElderGeek repair information for Internet Explorer (http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm)
You need a comfort level for the suggested course(s) of action. If you are not comfortable working in the registry, then don't! Let us know how you make out.

Nothing is working. I hate this crap. I update using THEIR update and it screws my whole IE up. I think it may have something to do with my javascript or HTML but I don't know squat about that. I'm gonna end up spending $35 to talk to the bastards at Microsoft.

Hey Dave, are you running XP?
If so do a System Restore, its saved me many times...

Excellent idea GR! It saved me once myself. You pick how far you want to go back and restores your computer to that date in time.
I had to do it once. And it worked like a charm.

Sometimes you have to go back a little farther then you would like, but it does bail you out.
Here's another geek forum I go to to read up on stuff. I haven't joined but they have some good stuff there...Source (http://forums.techguy.org/?)

I am running XP. How do I do a restore? I just did what I thought was a reinstall of windows and it's exponents but I still have the same problem. I reloaded AOL too and nothing.
When I try to go to site like firefox to download it, I am not seeing the "free download" button.

Dave, i'm not sure how to do it now. I've only had to do it once, and that several months ago.
I'm sure Pete will be able to help you out...

That's interesting that it's not showing a version on the about screen. I wonder if some of the files are corrupt.
To check your javascript settings you can go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Click on the Advance Tab, scroll down and there's a Java section there. Also, there's a section of Microsoft VM, make sure Jit for Virtual Machine enabled is checked.
You can also check the Security Tab to see what level of security you are using. The first box will list the various zones (Internet, Intranet, etc...). Click on the Internet Zone. Chances are it's set at a custom level. Click the Custom Level button. There's a bunch of options in there. If you scroll down, you'll see a section for Scripting. On machine, all of the options for scripting are enabled. See if that's the case. Sounds like your IE is corrupt. Maybe a file got corrupted during the updating.
Chances are using the CD with Windows on it won't over-write if the version on your computer is newer and you're doing a repair.

Go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools and System Restore should be the last one listed.
It should work for you. Just know you'll lose anything between now and the date you restore to, so back up what you need if possible.

Be careful with the system restore unless you have Windows automatically creating restore points for you. A lot of people don't have it doing that.

I'm gonna have to take it to Gateway. I'm still under warranty. I rebooted using the disk in repair mode and now I can use the machine but the display is huge and it won't let me reduce it. Something's seriously wrong.

Well things appear to be fixed but something still doesn't look right. I spent 2 hours with an MS person in India. My screen still looks wrong but my IE is working now. The screen either has icons that look too big or too small. Oh well.

That's probably the font size. Right-Click on your desktop and select properties. Click on the Appearance tab. There should be a Font size in the lower right-hand corner. The options are Normal, Large, Extra large. Also, click on the Settings tab to see what screen resolution you are in (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and higher on some machines). I believe the standard is 800x600 but I run in 1024x768.
