Linebacker Marshall re-signs with Redskins
February 18, 2005
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Linebacker Lemar Marshall, who started 14 games last season after LaVar Arrington's knee surgery, signed a three-year contract Friday worth about $2 million to remain with the Washington Redskins.
Marshall was primarily a special teams player in his first two seasons before he was thrust into the starting lineup last season by Arrington's injury. Marshall finished with a career-high 82 tackles and had 1.5 sacks.
The sudden burst of playing time made it tempting for Marshall to pursue free agency, but he decided not to test the open market.
``It was a comfortable situation for him,'' agent Richard Katz said. ``On a scale of one to 10, he expressed an excess of five in coming back.''
Marshall entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Tampa Bay from Michigan State in 1999. He had stints on the Denver and Philadelphia practice squads before joining the Redskins.

This is good news and solid depth at OLB if Marcus Washington or Lavar go down.

wow. this is great to have a reliable backup linebacker for the long term, who knows the system from first hand experience. And he is pretty cheap.

What a bargain. He'll provide great depth at LB.

Smart move by Lemar btw. I wasn't sure he'd get what he wanted via FA, and apparently neither did he. Good choice by him, and good choice by the Redskins.

Lemar will be good as OLB on third downs when we line Lavar up on the line and let him annhilate the entire opposing offense. Sounds like a good bargain too, good job guys.

I'm really glad to hear this. Hopefully, Pierce is next. Smoot and his mouth can hit the bricks.
BTW, did anybofy else notice this paragraph in the article:
"It was a comfortable situation for him," agent Richard Katz said. "On a scale of one to 10, he expressed an excess of five in coming back."
A five? A five?! That's about a half-step below apathy. Are you kidding me? I'm disappointed in Lemar.

Yeah I thought that was a little odd as well... I don't know why his agent would say that.

This is good news to hear, indeed. I think we got Lemar for a very good deal. I like the idea of him in basic pass coverage while we run our blitzes with Arrington & Washington. Redskin fans really could not ask much more than they got last year from Lemar. So far, the brief offseason is off to a pretty good start. Now, let's work on Smoot, Samuels, & Pierce.
HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!

he's a very good player who showed that when he was given the chance this year. i met his this summer at art monk football camp and he had a very good attitude. he told us that he loved the redskins organization and that he was going to continue to work hard and prove that he is a good player. and he did all of that his past year. i am very happy that he re-signed

Thats not the way a core Redskin guy would think.
I think he wants to be a Redskin, and this is what they could offer.
I wounder if there is salary bonuses that could kick in. The base does seem low.

Good signing. He really wants to play here or he would have just waited a few more weeks to see his value in FA.I think Williams saying early on that he did not want to take a job some where else had alot to do with his decision.FINALLY there is some stability.I read that Ramsey,Jansen, and Wynn restructured there contracts.I hope Samuels comes around soon or his butt will be playing some where else next year. :Peace:

this offseason has actually started off with taking care of the house first. all the restructures and now Lemar re-signing. i think other lesser known but just as important players are next in Salave'a and Albright.. then onto Pierce.

Whew! One down and another 14 to go. (I say at least 5 of our free agents are expendable. Probably more). Lets keep working at keeping our team togethher.

Obviously, Lemar would be less than completely enthusiastic about returning to Washington because he's going back to the bench. He's not going to be a starter in D.C. as long as Lavar and Marcus are healthy and he'd rather go somewhere to start. It appears that wasn't a realistic option, however.

glad to see he's sticking around
if all our LBs stay healthy (and on the team) I wouldnt be surprised to see a 3-4 every now and then
