I stumbled across some troubling numbers that show us as being in the worst cap situation in the division. The other teams in our division appear to have a decided advantage in terms of the amount of money they have to sign and resign FAs.

The site I found had both the Eagles and Cowboys with 17 million dollars under the cap and the Giants were 7 million under, with us coming in dead last at 4 million.

I think we need to tim some of the fat on our roster like the Eagles di when they let Brown and Vincent go. In my opinion the inflated salaries like Samuels need to go.

I think we went through this on a previous thread.

These figures did not include franchis tag figures (Corey Simon for the Eagles) and it is way too early to see what cuts the skins are going to make (although I think Morten, Barrow, Gardner are going to be goners soon in March).

We aren't in great shape but we don't need expensive fixes, just tweaks at WR, C, TE, a replacement CB for Smoot. We aren't far away from a really good team.

those numbers are misleading in the fact that they only reflect this year. philly has tons of people to resign next year and cant take on big contracts.we may only be 4 mill under but with the danny spitting out signing bonuses we still have a better shot then some might think because signing bonuses are broken down over the length of the contract which is why we have shifted focus to core REDSKINS ie guys that are young and can be built around..

Some of the figures are also suspect. If you look you'll find several sources who put the Giants cap space at $12 million, and the Washington Post said that the Redskins were $2 million under after the Jansen, Wynn, and Ramsey restructurings that occured after that article was posted.

The cuts you are suggessting aloms cost us money Gardner saves 1 million, Barrow saves 1/2 million, and Morton costs us 1/2 a million.

Does anyone know where we can get a REALIABLE and CURRENT breakdown of the 'Skins salary cap? Something with each player listed along with SB, Base Salary, Other Bonus and Total Cap Hit.

I found one on http://www.thehogs.net/html/Team/salary_table.php , but I'm not sure how up-to-date or accurate it is.(although it seems pretty good.)

But there are massive savings for 2006. It is not just about this upcoming year. That is the thinking that got us into this predicament to begin with. Also if Samuels does not restructure that is a cut that will save 5 million this year alone.

We have enough room to resign our guys if we want to. Also our draft picks as well. We don't need large free agent signings this year, and we can not afford it. Modest veteran signings a good draft crop and some key releases and we are golden.

The simple fact is that the Skins are able to squeeze cap numbers in order to get them to fit. Clinton Portis is only making, in base salary, 2 million in the years 2004, 2005 & 2006. With his bonus, its more, but still impressive.

If the giants are in such good shape why are they complaining so much about Strahans contract the eagles have to sign a lot of people back and well the cowboys suck bad and when you have nobody on your team you can sign a lot of people. The giants are worst off than us the next couple of years including this year. If danny dont know anything else he knows bussnes and he will make this work and we we still get a high profile FA.

So what does the release of Coles for this? Free up a few million at all?

It would have to be the majority of it right?....since it's a 7 year contract and coles was going into has only been with us for three seasons.

someone said he would give up his remaining 9 mil bonus....so how much would that free up? like 6 or 7 mil?

I would imagine Coles' release would pretty much make this year's cap hit a wash or minimal savings, and provide MAJOR relief for next year and beyond. His hit was going from approx 3.5 this year to 7+ next year and escalating, it sucks that he's gone but with his toe we were going to have to deal with this sooner or later and he probably knows that.
