View Full Version : Endless Combinations: How do we fill all our holes this year?

Now that Coles will probably be released and Smoot's contract negotiations look iffy at best, I think our holes look like so:
2 X WR - Big hole we lost both our starters
1 X CB - Smoots replacement
1 X OL - We need a new center
1 X TE - We need a good blocker
1 X DE - Need to be able to rush the passer with 4 linemen
Plus we need to resign:
1 X MLB - Pierce
1 X DT - Salave'a
And we need to restructor/extend:
LT - Samuels.
I thought this was supposed to be a relatively quiet offseason, but its going to be just as busy as it has been since the Snyder Era began. There are so many variable now that its almost impossible to guess how we will plug the holes. Here's my best stab at what we might do:
I think we replace Coles through FA(Derrick Mason if he's reasonably priced). We trade down for a lower first and a second. With those picks we grab another WR and a OC. Plus we give Taylor Jacobs a chance to get more involved. Smoot is the issue I am most shakey about, but I think he is replaced from within(Walt Harris, maybe even Garnell Wilds). In the third round we pick up big beefy TE mostly for blocking. We push the DE issue off for another year, hoping that Phillip Daniels will stay healthy and that G. Williams can make lightning strike twice with his brilliant schemes. Coles departure frees up enough cap space to sign Pierce and Salave'a. We manage to get Samuels to restructor/extend but the negotiations take a very long time and by the time its done we've already been forced to work around it.
I know there are a million other possiblities. Anybody else got any ideas?

1. To replace Coles I say we pick up Mason.
2. To replace gardner we should sign Givens.
3. I think we should either sign Ken Lucas or start Walt Harris to replace Smoot.
4. I believe that we should trade down our first round pick and get a first and second.
5. With our mid first we draft Marcus Spears, Erasmus James, or David Pollack.
6. With our Second from the Gardner Trade we draft Wilkerson and start him at center.
7. With our other second, we draft a CB. So, Garnell Wilds and the drafted CB can compete for the second, third, and fourth spot with Harris and eventually they both could start.
8. There are plenty of good blocking TEs that will be free agents this year, so get one in FA.
9. I also think we should trade Samuels to free up cap space. We could get a late first/early second. Then we draft Khalif Barnes and let him compete with Wilson/Molinaro for the starting LT job. After all of these moves we should still be under the cap as long as we trade Samuels. Even if we dont trade Samuels we should be able to re-sign him to a longterm capfriendly deal to save money.
10. With all the free cap space re-sign pierce and Salave'a.

watch our front office go to work. thats all i have to say. youve got a good plan but i think that the coaches saw this aways back and have prepared accordingly and they know who their going after to fill our holes. coles leaving wasnt new news for gibbs & co. like it was for us. so fire up redskin one, go danny go!

i'm still in shock.
ok.. now we're really going to see smash mouth, run oriented offense that Gibbs and Buges are good at. i see them really solidifying the Offensive Line with slobber knockers. a FA Center, possibly Tackle and Guard later in the draft.. definitely for depth, and a couple bruising TE's.
this could open the door to Smoot re-signing. with the passing game in chaos and offensive line concerns, the FO will at least want to put a stamp on the Defense to keep it good.. they might have to be our glue for another year.
i think Gibbs and Buges are going to be fired up over losing their starting WR's due to their unhappiness and show them the real deal of championship coaching! they'll sign a worthy FA WR but who's going to come here when our 2 starters wants out so bad? whoever we sign are going to want to be true Redskins. at least we're going to build a team now that's going to buy into Gibbs. another crazy offseason has started!

Actually Redskins One will hopefully be gassed and ready to visit Derrick Mason in less than 24 hours, as soon as he's cut by the Titans (which he can be officially on Tuesday) he is fair game. We should make a quick strike on him ASAP.

I knew that Gibbs will get those haters out of the park....we needs some guys that will buy into the system and make it who they are....I do hope that we can make some decent pickups in FA.....

Thats what we are asking for, but you're right most people think we are gonna get a third if we are lucky.

I say we sign Mason and Galloway because Mike Williams is going to be taken by the Titans now that Mason is gone.
We then use our 1st round pick on the top DE in the draft.
And use the rest of the draft to address the O-line.

The worse thing we could do is give Smoot what he is asking for. For that kind of money I would much rather have a FA because a lot of better that Smoot CBs would be available in the FA. Mason would be a good pickup in FA for WR if we don't go crazy on SB again. Trade down our #9 and pickup Troy Williamson. Then with our second we can either go C, OG or DE.

that's just an assumption because that's what we're asking for. a 3rd is more probable though.

I'm really not becoming a fan of FA.

1. Sign Jerry Porter
2. Upgrade Taylor Jacobs to #2 WR
3. Sign Charles Lee
4. Smoots Replacement: I still don't know if we can stick with Harris or bring in a new CB (Rolle, Lucas, maybe)
5. Trade down from #9 to get a late first and a second
6. Draft Erasmus James (or the best Pass-rushing DE available)
7. Draft Ben Wilkerson ( if not, sign Raiola of Hartwig)
8. Restructure Samuels (Easy to say)
9. TE?? Still don't know what we need, if we need somebody.
And hopefully we would still have two 3rd rounders, if we are able to trade Gardner for one.

As in....Joey Galloway? I would never, ever, ever, ever sign him to a contract. An infant is tougher than this loser.
