View Full Version : Another Reason why I don't like big name FA's...

Here's a prime example of how big name FA's bite us in the rear. Trotter is costing us 4.8mil in cap space in 2005. NO MORE BIG NAME FA's!!! This comment is aimed directly at those that want to sign a guy like Moss, Muhamed, Porter etc. Mason may come cheap but until I see the #'s I won't like it. Anyway, here's the link to the trotter cap hit http://www.nfl.com/news/story/8201532

i have to agree - i cringe every time we spend big money on a marquee player. last year was better than most (springs/griffin/washington played well), but I am always haunted by visions of deon and jeremiah trotter. depending on how much money he gives back, i may be adding coles to the list.

I have no problem giving big money to players who perform. Springs, Girffin, Marcus Washington, Portis. All good pick ups.

I don't know about that, I'd like to see what we have first. I think if Rdo and DMC leave then yes we need to sign someone. But if we end up keeping Rod, I say grab a good WR in the 1st round, plug TJ in a #2 or #3 and you still have Thrash to fill in and Don't forget about Antonio Brown.

Thats going into the season with this?
Rod
Rookie
TJ
Thrash

We arent any better off. Dump Rod and D-Mac. Sign a FA wr(big name or not) and draft someone.

I do understand what you mean....we have got to get ourselves unser the cap big time....the coles move is just the beginning, I believe. There will be others soon, if we don't get our cap act straight.

Good Post :)

That sucks, $4.5 million for Trotter next year. With all we hear about 2006/2007 being cap hell I would get use to this type of thing though. You're right though - we could fix the future by not repeating the past!!!

Guys we can't continue to sign FA's like it's free. Every year we're supposed to be in "cap hell" but somehow Snyder crunches the numbers and we come out ok for one year. Then, One of our big signings either get's released or cut and we're in dire straights again. We're going to have to pay the piper sooner or later. I say keep Rod G(as much as I hate him for his hands) while he's cheap- He'll be in a contract year plus he's got legit #1 experience and had his best season as a #1. Draft a good Rook WR and let's see what TJ can do. That way after Rod leaves, Maybe TJ steps up to be a valid #1 or the Rook does. Then you have Thrash as a wylie vet who can get ope on clutch 3rd downs, your #2 is either the Rook or TJ and from that point you should be in decent cap shape after 2 years of not signing big splash FA's. Who knows, maybe we find a good WR in the mid to late rounds. Maybe Antonio brown steps up. Lot's of maybe's but I just know we can't spend like crazy and expect to be in good cap shape.

Don't forget the Brunnell blunder. we can't keep putting of the cap issues for later down the road. No team is perfect but look at the pats. Was Branch a first rounder? Givens?- he was a 7th! Patten, Brown? all those guys are over achievers like Thrash. The pats had no problems going into a season with that line up-before they became really good, and look how it paid off. I'd put TJ up against any of those guys and know he is better but if we keep putting WR's in front of him on the depth chart he will never develop. Point is we don't necessarily "need" to get better at WR to improve upon our record last year.

Just when I thought we were going to have a simple, quiet offseason........

I'm getting frustrated with getting players via FA because it seems like every year it's a new team. I can't get attached (sp?) to players because they are gone in a year or two. Lots of these guys don't really feel like "Redskins" to me. But, that's the name of the game now. We have holes to fill, and we need to fill them somehow. I just think we need to think it out before we make a purchase (Brunell, Morton, DMac, Trotter, and now Coles) so we're just not throwing money down the toilet and watching it flush.

As for "perform", you're right on 3/4. IMO, Portis hasn't perfomed yet, but I expect that to change this year.

I also don't mind paying for big name players. But I hate the idea of going well over and beyond what other teams would spend for them just to ensure they will sign with us. It is amazing how the skins sign so many players before they even sit down with other teams. We are definitely NFL champs at this.

Let's hope that last year starts a new trend. I don't think anybody can argue that overall our offseason acquisitions last year worked out very well for the team. Now Gibbs is trying to find a core group of players to build this team around. Who knows? Things might get worse before they get better. I believe we're changing our ways slowly but surely.
