This thread will be for all the fans who don't trash a player just cuz he leaves the team(unless he bashes us of course). All the smoot haters can just not post. I wanna say bye smoot, we'll miss you, i hope u become a beast in minnesota(if the rumor is true)

If we don't hate him but don't think he is as good as he does or is even worth the reported $12M SB, can we still post here?

I doubt anybody hates Smoot, some of us think he was offered enough money and he should have taken it.
I think this thread is premature. There is no valid report that Smoot has signed anywhere.

Will miss smoot...he was my favorite skin and had more personality than half the team combined. Anyone cocky enough to say "2/3rds of the world is covered with water. The other 1/3rd is covered by Smoot." has my love and he could back it up.

Smoot, I enjoyed rooting for you and you earned you money with Minnesota. I wish you good luck but take your payday with class, if you bash our team like some punks have on the way out, then your memory will die with me just like theirs did. Until then, I'll wish you good luck.

Smoot: You have been my favorite 'Skin for the last 3 years. You were my first jersey. You had great personality and played with passion. You are as close to a true Redskins as we've had in this modern era. For this you will always be remembered.
I take solace knowing that you've gone to a RICHER place.
Rest in Purple.

I'M DISGUSTED WITH EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD THAT DOESN'T CARE THAT SMOOT HAS LEFT.
He was probably the greatest REDSKIN of the last 10 years (barring darrell green). He had the biggest heart of anyone on the team, and gave 125% every week. Have you all forgotten the games he played through with the shoulder injuries. How he came back, and played hurt, and how he was such a great cover corner. There is no replacing a player like Smoot. A player with his heart only comes around every 20 years or so.
It wasn;t his fault. We can blame our horribly innept front office, and a coach that, like other team's suggested, doesn;t understand the modern nfl or its athletes. I can't think of any other way that a player like LC would be so pissed. And then you cut him, lose 9.3 million in cap space. Cap space which could be used to re-sign our leader.
SO ITS OK, WE'LL JUST GET ANOTHER CORNER, AND THEN WE'LL GO 5-11, AND MISS THE PLAYOFFS AGAIN. AT LEAST WE'LL BE IN THE SAME POSITION NEXT YEAR AT THIS TIME; IN THE MIDST OF ANOTHER OFFSEASON OVERHAUL.
I'M TRULY DISGUSTED.
GoodBye Freddy, We'll pay for this, I know we will.

I'm not a fan of a guy who leaves for $800,000 more when he said he'd stay if the deal was within $2 million. I'm sure Smoot is a great and fun human being, but he is no "true Redskin" by any means. If he was, he wouldn't be a Minnesota Viking.

GoodBye Freddy, We'll pay for this, I know we will.Oh yeah I forgot smoot and coles matter more than the entire rest of the team. Our D will be fine without smoot, who was it who shut down Randy again? Certainly not smoot. And our receivers are already better than last year. We need a deep threat to open up the running game, and Coles didn't cut it. I'm sure you were complaining about our passing schemes last year well this is the solution. Coles might have been complaining that he didn't get to go deep enough, but it was because with his toe he doesnt scare anyone deep, we used him the only way we could.

I pretty much disagree with the entire sentiment of this post. I am trying hard to find something in it I agree with.
Greates Redskin of the last ten years? I don't think so, not IMO. In fact, besdies last season (a contract season) Smoot was not a hitter, plays tens yard off the receiver, and gives up a ton of first downs. Smoot has done pretty well because the Redskisn have alwasy had a good CB on the opposite side. I guess I shoudl say, the Redskins have had a BETTER CB on the other side. Champ was better than Smoot and so is Springs.
All the games he played through with shoulder injuries? That was just THIS year a CONTRACT year. Pullleze.
Cover CB? Smoot was infamous for giving too much cushion. He was not and is not a shut down corner. I am not going to belittle him, he has tremednous talent, but don't kid yoursefl, he was and is not among the NFL elite Cbs, and that is why many teams were standoffish toward his free agency.
Inept front office? Disagree again, this season is quite refreshing to me. Gibbs had major roster turnover last season, brought in up to 30 new guys. The team is gaining chemcistry, the team is grasping the offense, it showed toward the end of the season. He addresses our main weaknes, Center, and gives Coles a trade, because Coles wants one. It is called INTEGRITY and Gibbs has it! Coles wnated out, was not happy, and Gibbs and Snydder made it happen. What other owner woudl have given up $9.3 million???????? Snyder stood back, allowed gibbs to make this call, and ate a huge chunk of money. That alone in itself has showed how much Snyder has changed for the better, but Snyder allowed gibbs to make the deal and get Coles out since he was unhappy. You take Brunnel out of th epicture and I BEG TO DIFFER WITH YOU, this front offic edid a hellua job last year bringin in guys liek Portis, Springs, Washington, Salave'a, etc....and this seaosn they decided to be cost effective, cost conscience and draw a line. You can not have every single position with big salary numbers, you just can't. Get over it!
So we lose Fred Smoot and we go 5-11. What??????????????????? Sorry pal, but my faith lies in Gregg Williams until he proves me wrong. BTW, w ehave not had a winning record since Smot has been here, so that shoots down your last theory that we will have a losing record just because Smoot is gone, please, enough already.

Not trying to bash Freddie but the sad thing for me is the final Smoot performance. Getting torched by Keshawn and two ridiculous penalties, especially the helmet tackle which ended up injuring him.

Look at some of the other big shot CBs who have recently changed teams:
Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent -- They may as well have not played last year...neither was a factor, and Philly didn't miss a beat.
Champ - Probably the guy who could claim to be the best player the Redskins have had over the past 10 years based on pro bowls (not my opinion). Was very average in Denver, meanwhile the Redskins defensive rank jumped about 23 spots.
Ty Law - Hasn't left NE, but he looks pretty stupid now for whining about his 14 mill contract when the Pats proved they can win a Super Bowl without him.
Duane Starks - A pro bowl caliber player in Baltimore, he is getting tossed away for a mid round pick by Arizona, meanwhile his replacement in Baltimore (Baxter) just got a 10 mill signing bonus. Maybe its the system?
Antoine Winfield - Buffalo had a top 5 defense again, and Minnesota's defense was still pathetic.
Unfortunately for Smoot, I think he'll struggle in Minn. They now have two small corners in a division of big WRs (Roy, Mushin, Javon, Rogers) and playing on the rug is tough for a CB; especially a CB like Smoot that doesn't have elite speed. Meanwhile, the Skins will be okay with Harris or whoever, just like Buffalo and Philly were last year.

Detroit also has Marcus Pollard at TE, a corner's nightmare, because he sometimes blow by safteties and corners like a wideout. He isn't the greatest of blocker, but small corners don't benefit at all. They play Detroit twice a year.

i dont know why everyone is getting all excited and jumping up and down screaming we need to draft a cb with our first. last year chump was not supose to be replaced and we were suppose to have a huge hole in our secondary. well i dont know what happened to that hole but it got fixed just like this one will too. bye bye smoot.

I hate turnover and I will miss the guy. He played his heart out for us and that is all you can ask for. Once the Coles trade went through everyone knew that Smoot was gone because there was no money left to keep him.
NFL FA blows becuase it is way to hard to keep your own players. I like the NBA system much more becuase you can go over the salary cap to keep you team together. With the roster that we had last season we were only two players away from being a serious contender. We signed the center and we needed a pass rushing DE, and possibly a upgrade at TE although I would love to see Royal get a chance.
You almost have to train yourself not to appreciate any player in the NFL because there is no way to be certain that he will be back with your team the next season.
In any case, Smoot was one of my favorites and I wish him well.

Smoot's signing bonus was 10.8 and we offered 10.5
The fact is he didn't want to be a Redskin. Now he will be a part of the implosion of Minnesota while we rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the past crappy seasons and become the definitive power in the NFC.

I just saw a phone interview with Smoot on Comcast talking about his signing with the Vikings. He had only good things to say about coach Gibbs and how much he enjoyed being a Redskin. He said that they tryed really hard (Gibbs in particular) to get him back but in the end the salary cap was just too messed up. Even on this point he chose his words carefully.
My hats off to Smoot, a classy guy to the end unlike some over-egoed wide Recievers I know!

Players will always have an ultimate choice whether or not they prefer to chase top dollar or find a home within a mutually supportive structure. I understand that many will chose the money. Why not? But I doubt Tom Brady will get "Payton Manning" money when his contract is up. The new model doesn't allow bank-breaking roster moves at the expense of the the entire team. Smoot bolted for greener pastures and sobeit. I'll take a core guy who fights his guts out and wants to be here. The cubbard isn't barren. We've got Wilds and Williams to mold him... we've got the draft and a sound program. I'll take the new Redskins any ol' day.

I know I've taken a lot of heat in this thread, and probably rightfully so as I went on a crazy rant when I probably was too tied to go on, but I still say it was terrible to get rid of him.
I feel he was the best dback last year, and I loved his heart. Now we have no 2nd corner, and Springs could easily go back to his injured ways. I doubt whether Walt Harris still, or has ever had the ability to be a #2 corner in this league. By not resigning Smoot we have created a need that did not exist before.
People get on me for saying he is the greatest Redskin of the last 10 years. Name someone better. I allready said Green didn;t count. The only ones that comes to mind right now are Steven Davis and Jon Jansen. Who else played as well, and accomplished as much as Smoot? That is actually more of a reflection on how sorry this franchise has been rather than Smoot's greatnes.. He has played with the most heart of anyone 9more than Champ), and he didn;t get burned as often as Champ.
Otherwise, we haven;t hadf a great qb. Portis was a dissapointment last year to say the least. Coles wasn't here long enough, and he has been an ass since the end of the season. We haven't had a dlineman worth anything except for Griffin, but he needs to stay longer. Lavar has lost more games for us than he has won, and missed an entire season, and gotten in a fight with the owner. Champ acted like an ass once his contract was up.
I say it is a horrible loss, and I am so upset because he isnt the only one we have lost. We have also lost our mlb (no replacement in sight), and we have downgraded at wr from Gardner and Coles to Patten and Moss. We still don;t have a pass-rusher who can play in situations other than 3rd@long, and we don't have a wr over 5-11 on the roster. Even with the draft coming up, we will still have some gaping holes.
I hope that is a better respons. Sorry for the previous rant.

Smoot is good, but he's not--nor ever will-be considered great.
He's never been to a Probowl, and while they are popularity contests, he should have made at least one.
On who has accomplished more as a Redskins, I would put:
Jansen
Champ
Steve Davis
Lavar
Samuels
D. Green
Terry Allen
H. Ellard
Bruce Smith
and I would consider putting someone like Portis.

Re: it being about the $$, that goes all around. It was about the $$ for the organization too if not moreso.
Yeah see your point, but my eyes see a bit more than that. The timing of his decision was about as sly as you can get, if it weren't him, it had to at least be his agent. I am from a point of view, that your intent speaks volumes about you. No one questions his will or work ethic, at least I don't, but from the time this offer was laid out, Gibbs said he wouldn't budge and Smoot or the agent or both, relied on an old addage that worked before Gibbs came back.
Gibbs is ALSO the Redskins President, he doesn't NEED a single approval from anyone when he says 4 weeks ago, the offer is what it is. Meaning man to man, it aint' changing. Surely Smoot and his agent could have given the old courtesy call (of course for his agent that is way too difficult, as he waited for Dany Snyder to contradict Joe Gibbs). It is the same jockeying that goes on with all teams, but between the timing of leaving and alowing "a chance" for the coach to make up Smoot's loss, it was too close to looking like Coles to me.
Not sure what and how long a fan you are of the Skins, if that is what you are, but we took Smoot, (Marty's tenure) when no one was looking at him or even thought he should be around in even the 2nd round maybe the 3rd. Joe Gibbs didn't delay his ability to look elsewhere, but Joe was put on hold longer unnecessarily so he couldn't or wouldn't, because he's from the old school and this switching back and forth shows him not only has the sport become overhyped, but so have the courtesy moves between parties in negotiations.
Next agents will be laid out with blunts and hot legs in limos, pulling up to stadiums to make deals. I am at least assured that it won't happen on Joe Gibbs watch, neither the constant overblown deals. Go ahead and dig up the dead Brunell move, but rest it, better he's gone than to drag it out longer.

all three of those players restructed for Smoot. Bruce when Smoot was a rookie, LaVAr and Jansen over the last two years. Hmmm, aside from Smoots conversation, they were all equal in community service, showing up at games and working hard.

More than Smoot, yes. Bruce Smith was still a great player when the Skins got him--he had 10 sacks in 2000. Smoot was good, but he was not a guy like Champ was early in his career. Smoot would never have a 3 INT game, nor would he take on the #1 wideout/X wideout and shut him down.

I think smoot can compare with charles woodson, I also think that portis is one of the elite backs in the NFC I think the best back in the NFC would be between sean alexander, brian westbrook, The afc best is curtis martin or lamont jordan.

OK, you are entitled to your opinion. I am not getting into this with you... beyond the following:
If you honestly think that Lamont freakin' Jordan rates atop the AFC RBs, then you are currently in a recently painteted house and should open all of the windows... NOW. Oh, and, with the exception of TO, there is not an Eagle on that team who is not a product of the system. Good for the Iggles, bad for your position.
Bryant Westbrook.... sheeesh. Now I can see how you think Smoot with his zippy pro bowls can stack up against one of the top 3-5 CBs in the league.

Lamont Jordan is an intriguting back, but he hasnt shown anything to be consider a top back in his division, much less conference.

I saw the contract numbers compared between the Vikings and Redskins and Smoot got $300 K more in SB and has more money earned in the first three years than what we were offering. Pretty small in NFL dollar terms.
I salute the FO and Joe for being disciplined and sticking to their guns.

And I like how Smoot changed from "staying with the Redskins if the deal was within $2 million" to "I let the Redskins match any offer."

it Was the hardest loss of my career as a redskins fan. nothing can really describe the pit i felt after losing smoot, who in recent days looked resignable. in fact he was. the contract differences were negligable, it seems. smoot simply decided he wanted to go. goodby fred. i miss you already. enjoy the winter.
as for joe, danny and company, i applaud your effort, standing up to doubters who thought you couldnt avoid dropping some cash this year on a new hot rod. they now holler at you for not spending enough. lets start stockpiling talent. maybe not trade a draft pick for 06 unless its a rediculous steal. i see a bright future with this idea. coach em up gibbs. just dont read the newspaper.

Smoot. Played with passion, a pretty good #2 CB. Played above his size. I lilked his non-stop mouth, because he had fire in his belly.
Drank the kool-aide from Champ and went over to the Vikings for a few hundred thousand more than the 'skins generous offer. That's the land of FA.
Perhaps he wanted to go to a true contender team vs. a team with perpetual "promise"?????
I hope he has a good ride with the Vikings (except when they play the Redskins).
Oh, and if he starts to bad-mouth the 'skins ------------he'll be dead to me, like Mr. Bailey and Mr. Coles.
Adios. NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
