this is effing ridiculous. my only prayer right now is that they win the play in game and play UNC in the first round so i can cheer for my other team to beat the hell out of them.

Huh? Not sure i'm following you Jason. The link took me to Oakland/Oral Roberts score.
Oakland finishes 12-18 and make the dance.
Oral Roberts finished 25-7 and are left out.

ORU was only going to get in with the automatic bid unless Oral calls in a favor from his big buddy upstairs. We lost by one on a last second shot so oakland got the automatic bid and we get the NIT, hopefully host a first round game. we have 25 wins and played some good schools close, but we didn't get any love from the RPI. there's always a chance we might slip in, but i SERIOUSLY doubt it.
i'll clarify...i'm an ORU alum, so i cheer for them first, but i've been a UNC fan forever just because i watched them a lot growing up. since my alma mater lost to oakland, i'm hoping that oakland beats whoever they play in the play-in game and that UNC gets to play the play-in winner and beats the living snot out of Oakland.

My apologies fent. I'd much rather have ORU there. I like the small schools getting in but I agree that tournament winners might not be the best choice.

i couldn't agree more...i kinda wish i was still in school so i could be there to comfort all the forlorn ladies :devil2:

I watched the ending to that game ........ Fentonator - buddy I FEEL your pain but as MD did many times this year - your team just didn't get it done (and that was on your home court too correct?). NOW I don't feel they should be throw to the NIT (unfair-YES) but seeing how the bottomline is ALWAYS money, your team just doesn't have the draw of a MD or NCSt. (Like I said - unfair). I would love to see the NCAA expand the field for a play-in round (bubble round - 16 teams) and make it so that the division winner AND tournament winners all receive automatic bids.
There's still a chance your guys may get in - IF not maybe we'll see a Terps vs OR in the NIT (I know - big deal).

well, it was basically our home court. it's a high school about 3 miles away from campus so the ENTIRE campus was there (yes those kids painted blue are my legacy, a buddy of mine and i were the first ones to go crazy at games...our history is sad really). and we'll probably get the NIT, supposedly to host a first round matchup. like i said, it's going to take oral calling a favor from God to get into the big dance at this point, though with 25 wins you never know. i'd actually go for an ORU-MD matchup...my roommate and i wouldn't talk for at least a week!

You can always look at the bright side. The women's team made it...

Teams like Oakland making the tournament are what makes it exciting. Sure, Maryland, Va Tech and Ga Tech are all better teams but if they really had the 65 best teams in basketball, they could just do away with mid-majors or small D-I programs.
If a team wins 25 and can't beat a 12 win team, they don't deserve to be there.

I agree that smaller D1 programs makes it exciting, but it still stinks for an ORU b/c it was one game. UNC lost to Santa Clara but nobody in the country would say SC is better. Things happen and it stinks that this could wipe out a nice season for ORU.

I have no problem at all with Oakland making it in over Oral Roberts. If ORU had taken care of business and won their game they wouldn't have any problems. Oakland had a great tourney and are playing the best as anyone in the conference right now, they deserve for that reason to represent the team in the NCAA Tourney.

Kenny, I think conference tournaments should be done away with for this reason. Automatic bids should go out to regular season conference champions. This would eliminate this type of situation. What do you think?
Oral Roberts doesn't deserve to be in the tourney.

I don't have a problem with the tournaments themselves, rather the winner automatically qualifying for the NCAA tournament.
I think you meant that Oakland doesn't belong in the tourney, right?

how funny would it be if savannah state won their division and got in, their 0-28 right now

I think the 1-bid conferences should create rules that say that the regular season champion can play the tournament champion in a one game playoff if the tournament champion was not in the top 3 of the league. That would put more emphasis on the regular season which is virtually meaningless in many leagues.

i think its fine just the way it is. you gotta take care of business like already mentioned. i mean, how exciting is it when some team wins a conference tourny out of the blue, like maryland did last year? while OR might have proven more often throughout the year that they deserved to go to the NCAA tourny, they just didnt take care of all the trash.

I would absolutely love it! What team had the fewest wins and still made the tournament?

In reality an under .500 team shouldn't be in but that's the beauty of the NCAA Tourney, having the little guys match up w/ the big guys and occassionally winning.
